Dear listers, Many thanks to all who responded to my posting on the reliability of the IGI. So many did, please take this as a special thanks to each of you. You have all confirmed what I originally believed. Now, can anyone tell me how, for each entry, the coding distinguishes between LDS submissions and between films that are "one step removed from the original contemporary records". Can you see me waltzing in to the Porto FHC and ask them to order some 100+ films? They're a pretty new center and would probably have a panic attack as I doubt there are even as many as 5 of us genealogists in Northern Portugal!!! I'd like to narrow down the search! TIA -- Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens In Northern Portugal Researching: England: ALLOTT, BERRUMET, BOYNTON, COODE, GLOBE, HARDAKER, HODGKINSON, LEESE, MILLAIS USA: BOYNTON, BACHELDER, FOGG, CLOUGH, COOK, GORRELL, HAM, OSGOOD, WHICHER/WHITTIER CHILE: BUCHANAN, LEESE
Dear Maggie: You wrote... Just how reliable is the IGI? After looking through it (on the LDS Familysearch page) More than once, I found two or three separate entries for a same individual, sometimes with identical information, sometimes with slightly different information. In my experience, the IGI contains two kinds of information. One is, as you have experienced, a collection that seems to originate in the submission of data as part of the project that leads to the Ancestral File and the members of the LDS church meeting their obligation to extend their family in the church by genealogical work. However, the IGI also contains data extracted over the years from the project the church has undertaken to collect and preserve records. For instance, many British Parish Registers (b, m, d) records are collected there. I can remember using them extensively when they were available only on microfiche. So, I would suggest to you that you determine how to separate one of these kinds of data from the other, via the coding system. The transcribed actual records are an extremely valuable resource -- one step removed from the original contemporary record of the event. The others may be taken as clues to other, original sources that will lead you to the information you want by your own efforts. Hope this helps. Allan E. Green
Dear list, Just how reliable is the IGI? After looking through it (on the LDS Familysearch page) More than once, I found two or three separate entries for a same individual, sometimes with identical information, sometimes with slightly different information. All indicating separate fiche numbers. It's my impression this is just a compilation of what exists on the LDS records, as individual submitters entered the information. Can anyone confirm? Yes, Magdalena, the new LDS site contains info from all of their files, complete with duplications, inaccuracies, etc. As with anyone's information, there are errors and mistakes which are perpetuated for decades. As noted on other lists, we must continue to do our own verifications based on independent researching. Cautionary notes aside, however, this new resource does provide clues and in many cases the name of a submitter you can contact. The address may be current enough to put you in touch with an individual who shares your interest in that particular entry. One other particularly useful feature of the LDS information is that entries often cite film numbers which you can request through FHCs if you are fortunate to be near one. Hi, I am seeking any information on Mary Jane ROWE married Ezra Nichols GEORGE on 21 May 1862 in Newton, Rockingham, NH. All that I know about Mary Jane is that she was born 19 Aug 1838 in Franklin, NH and died 19 Sep 1898 in Newton, Rockingham, NH. Anyone who can provide me with further information on Mary Jane would be appreciated. She is my gggrandmother on my father's side. Thanks, Cherryl Ball
I have a hand written genealogy that lists three generations of my Campbell family living in Rocklin Co. The first generation is supposed to be Henry Campbell, b. 1697, d. 1782, Windham, NH, m. Martha Black, emigrated in 1733 from Londonderry, Ireland. Son John was b. 1758, in Windham, d. 1820, m. Betsy Moore. John was supposedly a Revolutionary War veteran, serving at Bunker Hill, Lexington and Ticonderoga. John's son, James, was b. in 1789, either in Rocklin Co. or in Merrimack Co, m. Mary Bagley. He moved to Pittstown, Rensselaer Co., NY, where he is buried. Can anyone verify any of this Campbell information? I don't know who wrote the genealogy from which I got this information, so I don't know what I can believe. Thanks, Scott Herrington

She married Nathan PEASLEE February 18, 1771 in Pownalboro, Maine. + vi. Caleb Bartlett, born May 11, 1755 in Plaistow, New Hampshire; died June 14, 1819 in Bartlett's Mills, New Brunswick, Canada. vii. Rachel Bartlett, born April 17, 1757 in Plaistow, New Hampshire; died November 23, 1830 in Whitefield, Maine. She married Solomon POTTER September 16, 1795 in September 16, 1795. viii. William Bartlett, born October 6, 1764 in Plaistow, New Hampshire. x. Mehitable Bartlett, born January 24, 1765 in Plaistow, New Hampshire; died September 1835. She married Ebenezer PHILBROOK in Whitefield, Maine. I am descended from Jonathan and Lydia's son, Caleb, and his wife Molly COOPER. Jonathan and Lydia moved to the Whitefield/Balltown, Maine area sometime between 1771 and 1784. I am looking for information on who Jonathan's parents were and his date and place of birth. This is a major mystery among those of us researching this family and any information at all on this family would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to hear from anyone with information on Jonathan and Lydia's grandchildren. Thank you. The library of Congress has a lot of downloadable information including maps at:<http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ammemhome.html> Another site is <http://www.nh.com/legacy/hismapof/index.shtml> These are very detailed Birds Eye views of many NH towns and worth the time to download. You will have to Down load the MrSIDS viewer but it's free. They are in ,sid formate but you can convert to .tif . A typical 2MB sid will be about 150MB in .tif, however the size is about four or five feet. Once you resize to something more resonable and save as .jpg you can get it down to 1 to 2 MB. Keep searching, I'm still amazed at the amount of info on the internet I can get. Bill,I had to download a lot of maps but I finally found Knowles pond. No luck with your Island though. The Lat and Long sure helped (I'm flying the Boeing 777) but you nearly have to down load the entire map to get the coordinates, by that time you may as well download the entire map for future reference. This I didn't mind as being a pilot I enjoy and appreciate calligraphy as it pertains to maps. Maps of NH page <http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/NewHampshire.htm> Or go dirctly to the Penacook sectional, South East quadrant, 1927 <http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/pena27se.jpg> Knowles pond is in the top left corner The North East quadrant is at <http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/pena27ne.jpg> Note that sometimes place names are changed. There is a lake just SW of Whitefield that was called Montgomery Lake after my 3rd Great grandfather which was renamed Burns Pond.in the late 1800s Being Canadian, why do you call your lakes Ponds? To me a Pond is a small dugout or similar with no running water. George, Note that Sanbornton is in the North East quadrant. <http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/pena27ne.jpg> Good luck! > Subject: Re: Knowles Pond & Knowles Island > Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 15:04:23 -0400 > From: wprokasy <wprokasy@arches.uga.edu> > To: NHROCKIN-L@rootsweb.com > > Knowles Island is located near Hampton, NH. Kevin, I recall from economics classes a few years ago that inflation was almost none existent prior to about 1912. since then it has been nearly 80 fold. Your 8.00 would be about 640.00 plus 160.00 today. Someone out there may have more accurate info but I think you'll find the 80x as a good ballpark > Subject: Cost of Living > Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 18:34:17 -1000 > From: "kevin and rika" <kevrik@shaka.com> > To: NHROCKIN-L@rootsweb.com > > When Charles Page died during the Civil War , his widow Lucy applied for a > pension . I don't know if this will help any as it doesn't go back quite as far as you need. The average inflation rate since 1926 is 4% per year. That includes the Jimmy Carter years when it was up as high as 16%. -- Harold Templeton Round Lake Beach, IL cfp@iwc.net CT: Barnes, Horsford, Lamb, Richardson. KY: Shields. When Charles Page died during the Civil War , his widow Lucy applied for a pension . She received $8.00 a month , plus $2.00 extra for each child under 16 until it turned 16 . I know currency has inflated many times since . Would anyone know any prices at the time or know where to find such information . Mahalo , Kevin
On my ancestors' wedding certificate , I found the ceremony was performed by the Rev. Elias Smith . This took place in Epping on April 2 , 1843 for Charles Page and Lucy Tilton . Would anyone have an idea on what denomination /church this would have taken place in ? I am still trying to find Charles and Lucy's parents and this may be a clue . Mahalo , Kevin
