Cousins & Colleagues... Robert Emerson, b. January 9, 1746 in Hampstead, married Mary Webster at Hampstead on November 19, 1767. My question: who are the parents of this Mary Webster, who was born about 1746? A Mary Webster was born February 9, 1746/47 in Salisbury to Samuel and Elizabeth (Whiting) Webster. Is she the one who married Robert Emerson? Bill -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William F. I am safely returned from my whirlwind trip to MA and NH. I was unable to spend as much time hunting ancestors as I would have liked (after all, it was a business trip). I did get to Windham, Londonderry, and Concord. I will follow up with a travelogue and the findings that may be of interest to the list. The most exciting thing was finding the Cemetery on the plains (aka Old Plains Cemetery) and the graves of my original American ancestors, Daniel and Esther Clyde. I was also very excited to see several hundred references to them and their descendents in the surname catalogue (town records) at the New Hampshire State Library. regards, Shannon Clyde
Need any data on family and ancestry of John Cross who died in Londonderry about 1824. Had wife Lucy who d. 1818 in Londonderry. Children named in will were John, Amos, Lucy Schute, Nathaniel, William and Mary. Also named Lucy, Nancy & Eliza Stimson, children of deceased daughter, Elizabeth. Have been unable to determine where John and Lucy are buried. Am particularly interested in knowing if son John is the same John Cross who was in Walpole for 1790's thru about 1820. Shannon, I too will be in new England Next week and some in Rockingham Co but not doing too much genealogy. If you plan to stay be Boston, going to NEHGS is a must. You can go to their website nehgs.org It is closed mondays! I used to always forget that! They have NH town records and the index, all the State censuses for New England. All microfilmed VR for New England. and good town histories and genealogies. It is a good place to start and they have staff who are experts on all the New England.states and can save you a lot of time! Info on all 6 NE states and a lot on Eastern Canada. There is a great book. It was out of print but was about to be reprinted any day now called Handbook for New England Research. tells places to go hours open etc. ( I know from experience that many of the town offices are closed for 1-2 hrs at lunch and some are not open all day every day. Also If you are near a Family History library they have printed "helps" for different states. Concord NH has the Archives, the Historical society, state library and VR office. Most are pretty close to one another. I have been to the Lane Library ( not for a while) and it has good info and helpful people. The Rockingham County courthouse was in EXETER but I think I read somewhere it had moved to Brentwood??? Maybe someone else can tell you about that. Depending on the time period, If you need naturalization records, they are in Waltham MA at the National Archives ( have almost all of New England there and it is soundexed in two separate indexes. Good luck and happy hunting!!.............jane in N CA
Shannon, Another intresting place to visit is the Portsmouth Athenaeum. Their brochure states "Opened to the public in 1986, the Joseph P Copley Research Library is a center for the study of regional history, literature, and culture. Available to the researcher is the library of over 40,000 volumes, as well as the extensive manuscript and photograph collections, maps, newspapers, periodicals, and local imprints." The Research room and the Randall Room exhibition gallery are the two sections of the Athenaeum that are open to the public. Their exhibitions are very well done, and always intresting. It is at 9 Market Square, right in downtown Portsmouth. It is open on Tues and Thurs from 1 - 4 pm and Sat from 10 - 4 (at least the last I knew) for information call (603) 431-2538. e-mail: athenaeum@juno.com

Thanks for the plug for our library, but don't forget to try the Exeter P.L. as well. Their genealogical collection is better than ours. And of course he should go to the county record offices in Brentwood as well, and probably the town of Londonderry library, although I'm not familiar with their collection. Magdalena writes, Now, can anyone tell > me how, for each entry, the coding distinguishes between LDS submissions > and between films that are "one step removed from the original > contemporary records". Magdalena, I am not certain about the IGI on microfiche but if there is a computer then go to the IGI and pick a name (entry) and click "enter" (or return etc.) and details of the persons event shows. If no details on source hit "enter" again (and maybe a third time). Then you should get to a page where it notes the film it is on and whether it data from church procedures from members or whether it is from an extrction program. The extraction procedures are quite accurate - Two persons copy each record independantly and then a more experienced person compares the two with the original and submits the final copy. Also at the computer get the catalog and browse by place, surname or other topic. Going to your choice will tell quite a bit about the film. The catalog also has books but these do not go to the branches. One thing, earlier the LDS would make films of requested books (within copyright limitations) but this has been discontinued as there are too many books. If the book was filmed earlier then a copy of the film should still be available. Experiment with the catalog! Brian Littlefield Ft. Wayne, IN
