The addendum of Virginia Hufbauer's book on desc of John Knowles provides info that John & Jemima Austen/Austin Knowles 1st son, John Knowles, Jr., m Susanna Lawrence b 3 Jul 1667 at Groton (likely Groton, Middlesex Co., MA), d 17 Oct 1745 at Hampton, d/o Susanna Bachelder (d/o William Bachelder & Jane Cowper) & John Lawrence. John's wife was apparently originally thought to be Susanna Page. LDS Ancestral file(s) also make the linkup between Susanna Lawrence and John Knowles. Does anyone have data on the Lawrence or Bachelder lines which also include info on Susanna Lawrence? Regards, Ellen Knowles Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net

Hi, In the "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire", I have a Johnathan Sleeper born 17 Mar 1699. His father was Aaron who married 1st on 23 May 1682 to Elizabeth Shaw. Aaron lived in Hampton then Kingston. It lists siblings plus 2 other SLEEPERS: John and Thomas. I found nothing on Lydia Huntoon. If this is the Jonathan you're looking for, I'll send additional info. Milli Gould
Karen, Here is my source for Thomas SLEEPER and his children. I must admit that I have not been as thorough on this line as I have on some of my other families, but this should be a reliable source. From: Sybil Noyes, Charles Thornton Libby, Walter Goodwin Davis, "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire", Reprint, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1983, p. 638: "Sleeper, Thomas, weaver, Hampton, bot from Christopher Lawson 15 July 1645 a 5 a. ho.-lot in Hampt. betw. There are also sections on his sons John and Aaron that I did not transcribe. The portion I transcribed as "[Lists...]", refer in the book to documents on which the name of the individual appears. I did not transcribe them because they are just a list of numbers keyed to document descriptions at the beginning of the book. They are not usually particularly enlightening, but I will dig them out if you are interested. I also have the following concerning your Elizabeth TOWLE: >From William Haslet Jones, "Philip Towle, Hampton, New Hampshire: His English Origins and Some American Descendants", Heritage Books, 1995, p. 40: "143. James Towle [Caleb 57] He was born 31 Dec. 1747 at Chester and died 31 Dec 1825 at Danville, N.H. He married 13 Sep. 1768 Abigail Colbey at Hampstead dau. of Enoch & Sarah (Sargent) Colbey. Calib, b. 26 Dec. 1783, d. 13 Apr. 1859, md. 9 Apr. 1809 Esther West. 302. John M., b. 19 Dec. 1802." James TOWLE was first cousin to my Samuel Towle who married Rachel ELKINS. I have not found Jones' book to be terribly reliable. In fact, if his treatment of my ancestor, Matthias Towle, is any example, it is totally untrustworthy. The portion of the book dealing with Philip Towle's possible English ancestry is the author's own research, but the portion concerning his descendants is a compilation from several secondary sources, most of which are over a century old. Mr. Jones can't be blamed for mistakes in genealogies written before he was born, but he can be taken to tasks for his failure to cite those sources properly, or for failing to note when primary source evidence clearly contradicts the conclusions reached in those works. Thus, I would use this source with some skepticism. For example, the 19 year gap between the birth dates of the last two children listed above looks highly suspicious to me. In your original message you asked if anyone had proof the Elizabeth's ancestry was as given above. This reference certainly is not "proof". Do you have any particular reason to believe that what is given above is not accurate? Other sources I have used: ELKINS: GDMNH (as cited above); Dow's "History of Hampton, NH"; (The genealogies in Dow are online at the Hampton Library: http://www.hampton.lib.nh.us/hampton/history.htm ) TOWLE: Dow's Hampton. COLBY: Hoyt's "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury." Let me know if you need look-ups on any of these families. I'm looking for the parents of Polly (Mary) STEWART, b. 21 Feb 1790 in Kingston. She married William Kimball and ended up in Vienna, ME. Another Kimball wife was William's mother, Dorothy TAYLOR. I know next to nothing about her. She was probably born around 1745 and died 7 Sep 1817. She married John Kimball of Poplin, so I'm hoping that's where she was from. Can you tell I'm grasping at straws? The others are in the ELKINS line. Does anyone have proof that the parents of Elizabeth TOWLE (b. 6 Jan 1770 in Danville) were James Towle and Abigail Colbey? I need her siblings, too, if she had any. Elizabeth m. Jeremiah Elkins. Jeremiah's mother, Ann BROWN was the daughter of Abraham Brown, but I don't know her mother. Ann was born 23 Nov 1717, but I'm not sure where - Hampton, maybe? She m. Capt. Thomas Elkins. The last of my mystery women is Mary SLEEPER (I love that name!). Mary was the daughter of Thomas Sleeper, but I don't have any dates, other than her marriage to Gershom Elkins on 15 May 1667. Any dates, places, siblings, etc. on these ladies would be wonderful! Is there any one who has worked on these lines? Was Hannah an unrecorded dauther of Phillip sr and Hannah, or was she perhaps the widow of Phillip jr, as suggested by Noyes et al. Rockin Rooters, Last week I made some revisions to the Welcome Message that everyone receives when joining the NHROCKIN-L mail list. The message for NHROCKIN-D is similar, but obviously is different in appropriate places. Since many of you have been subscribers since almost the beginning (March of 1998), I know that your version probably looks considerably different from the version below. That's also true for even you more-recent subscribers. It is my hope that each of you will take the time to read the message below and save it for future reference. Thanks for your interest and cooperation. ********* Welcome to the NHROCKIN mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to NHROCKIN as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. PLEASE save a copy of this message for your future reference. The cities and towns of Rockingham county are: Atkinson, Auburn, Brentwood, Candia, Chester, Danville, Deerfield, Derry, East Kingston, Epping, Exeter, Fremont, Greenland, Hampstead, Hampton, Hampton Falls, Kensington, Kingston, Londonderry, Newington, New Castle, Newfields, Newmarket, Newton, North Hampton, Northwood, Nottingham, Plaistow, Portsmouth, Raymond, Rye, Salem, Sandown, Seabrook, South Hampton, Stratham, and Windham. Queries and discussions about genealogy, history, people, and events in the above places (ONLY) are appropriate topics for this list. Please help us by keeping at least some part of each your postings connected to the above. While your posts are not screened in advance, all posts are monitored, and these rules are enforced. If you have some doubt, chances are it is for good reason. The List Administrator is always available to answer any questions about the appropriateness of a subject matter BEFORE it is raised. Please take advantage of that help when in doubt. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to: NHROCKIN-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and NO additional text, including no name, address, or "signature." Please do NOT send messages or queries to the above address. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" (without the quotation marks) to: NHROCKIN-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to NHROCKIN-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to NHROCKIN-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to NHROCKIN-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. 6. Please don't send documents attached to your messages addressed to the mail list (attachments). Always send attachments to individuals only, and if the attachment is a lengthy document or an image, even then, it is considered a courtesy and a wise move to seek permission first. 7. Since many subscribers of mail lists often subscribe to several lists at the same time, their daily mail is often more than they are able to read. Such persons frequently read no further than the subject heading of your message. Therefore, you will avoid the arbitrary deletion of your unread message if you make it a habit to carefully word your subject heading to make it as informative, yet efficiently brief as possible. For example, a query about a person might be titled: DOE, John, 1750-1820, Exeter. Now if your message is deleted without reading, at least it shouldn't be deleted by a subscriber with information about your "John DOE." 8. NHROCKIN No-No's: a. See #6, above; b. Posts with absolutely no Rockingham connection (birth, residency, marriage, death, historical or geo-political event); c. "Flames" sent to the list. Zero tolerance. NO exception. Strictly enforced. d. Advertising or offers of genealogy services for a fee or products for sale. While individals may privately consent to pay fees for extraordinary services involving more than a few moments of time and trouble, all such agreements are strictly at the sole risk of the parties involved. No responsibilty is assumed by the list administrator for any enforcement on behalf of either such party. Seller and buyer beware! e. Opinions sent to the list about what should be, or should not be "on-topic," or the "appropriateness" of a subject matter for list discussion. This topic is reserved as the exclusive domain of the list administrator. Opinions are welcome, but only if they are directed to the list administrator privately. His decision on the matter is final. For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included below. One thought I had and have never pursued is that since John Knowles was a mariner and the name knowles was in VA and maybe in Barbados ( I seem to remember someone mentioning that to me) that perhaps he was from there AND then met someone and or decided to settle in New England .... .............just a way out thought. jane knowles lindsey

I have recently found a Sally Carter in my line and can't place her. She married William Colby in Amesbury, MA on 9 April 1814. The marriage record just gives her as "of Newton" and does not list her parents. She died in 1873 and again the VR does not give her parents name. Can anyone place her? Hi all, Does anyone know if the Vital Records for New Hampshire counties are available on CDs (like the Massachusetts: Essex County VRs)? I'm trying to find information about Deborah GILMAN, b. 1761 in (I believe) Deerfield, Rockingham, NH. She married Timothy Morse PEARSON (b. 4/24/1756, Newbury, MA). They were married in Deerfield and resided there. Who were her parents? Where were they from? Deborah was my 4th great-grandmother. I would welcome any help. I live in South Carolina and have no access to New England records. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Sincerely, Pamela Rhett Molzan Pilgrimpjm@aol.com
