I was writing up everything I know about IGI and Ancestral File for a woman on one of the lists I subscribe to and decided that I may as well share it with everyone. This is information that I was given by the director of the FHC in Hemit, CA when I took a class from him and some of what I have learned along the way.It may not be completely accurate, but may be of interest to those of you who know little or nothing about these two tools. The IGI is extracted information. It can be good information extracted from original vital records, church records, etc. or it could be extracted from a family group sheet submitted to the church, which may or may not be accurate. The source codes give you some indication. If it is a number only it is extracted from a family group sheet. The first two numbers tell you what year it was submitted, thereby giving you an idea whether or not the submitter is still living. You can order the family group sheet at the FHC. When it comes it will include the submitter's address and MIGHT include sources. However, remember this is submitted by someone like you or I. Often there are mistakes. If the code has a letter in front of it like M or C, this indicates it is extracted from a collection of Marriage records or Christening records, etc. These vary in reliability, but you can also track down the source of these at the FHC if you find someone who knows how to decipher the code. They should have a book at the FHC telling how to do it, but someone who knows how would be better. If it has a Film #, this is a film that you can order at the FHC. You should check the title on the computer at your FHC to see if it appears to be something of interest to you. Sometimes they are films of Mormon Church records, but often they are films of vital records. You need to check before ordering. I BELIEVE that if there is a film number and then it says "Relatives:" and names the relatives that this is probably a church record submitted by that relative, such as "Baptisms of the Dead" and is only as reliable as the submitter. I ordered one of those by mistake and will try not to make that mistake again. There is nothing more disheartening than to wait for two weeks for a film only to find that it is useless. Ancestral File is similar to Family Tree Maker pedigrees. They are only as good as the submitter's research, but at least they are a starting place, information to prove or disprove. The codes included in these records are simply an Ancestrile File number that has been assigned to each person. You can search on the computers at the FHC using that number. For those of you who may not know about the LDS site yet, here is the URL: http://www.familysearch.org/ I hope this helps! Group: I'm glad this came up as it is a valuable idea for serious genealogical hunters .... I've been doing it unconsciously for many years .... only passing out my law office cards instead. Instead of hiring a commercial printer as I do e.g. $25 per 1000 one can use "Avery" business cards, print your name and address e/mail and fax and phone on one side like a regular business card: on the back include the lines you are researching or to which you are connected. Use either a business card program to prepare 10 at a time or use Office 97 or Word Perfect 98 (my preferred) which contain label printing sections therein. The more I think about this idea, the better it is. many people doen't have them. When you get home from a field trip, you have cards with notes on them and needn't worry about finding, your notes. Kerry, What Fred says about NHHILLSB is a ditto for NHROCKIN and NHMERRIM, too. The following is from the RootsWeb Common Sense Use Policy: 9.COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRE PERMISSION. RootsWeb's intent is to provide a friendly and, as much as possible, noncommercial environment. Any activity that involves the exchange of money requires prior permission from RootsWeb. This message is being posted to these lists in order that all subscribers may be aware of the above policy. All are also reminded that anyone who choses to ignore this policy and to privately enter into an agreement for services in exchange for money, does so at his or her own risk. Further, no postings regarding such exchanges should be made here either with or without RootsWeb permission. Thanks. In addition to the family's place of residence, the following information will be provided for each family member: name, relationship, age, month and year of birth (1900 Census only), place of birth (state or country), and citizenship. Please reply by private e-mail for details. Thank you. K. O'Brien
The Hampton library genealogy website has just been updated once again. The latest update includes much information from the Charles E. Batchelder genealogy edited by Carl Brage in 1985 ("Batchelder/Bachilder genealogy through Rev. Stephen Bachiler's son Stephen Bachilder : (A correction of the work on this family by Pierce) [manuscript] / Compiled by Charles Batchelder through 1936". For those of you unfamiliar with this work (not for sale anywhere, so don't ask!) it makes many corrections to previously published Batchelder information in both Dow's History of Hampton as well as Pierce's popular Batchelder family genealogy. In some cases entire lines are shifted to different branches of the family. Anyone with Batchelder ancestry should certainly check the library's website to see if your information is current. Also check your information on the good Rev. Stephen Bachiler himself. All of our names and dates on him come from Robert Charles Anderson's recent work "The Great Migration Begins", which corrects many misunderstandings about his many wives and children. Thanks go once again to Dick Marston for typing all of this data into the computer for us. Couldn't do it without you Dick! Dear Don and All Listers, I consider myself soundly reprimanded -- and deservedly so. My only defense, pitiful as it is, is pure ignorance - I didn't even realize I had neglected to enter a subject until I read my first 'response' from Mariana. Imagine my embarrassment -- to be caught by the listowner, herself -- and oblivious to my own error! I feel like I just started Kindergarten and I've been called into the Principal's office! I put sincere effort into my query, and am naturally disappointed to discover that I can expect no responses due to my own inattention to detail. I can't even claim to be new - I have been participating on this list for about a month now -- and I should have been more aware of what I was doing! I hope you all can forgive my 'list' infraction. Please accept my apologies, for committing the 'cardinal sin' of list usage, as well as for reposting my original message (below) in the hope that someone will take pity on me and help me out! Have a great day, in spite of this nuisance! Thanks for listening. I just learned that the parents of Joanna BROWN (b. 12/10/1736 and wife of Samuel HOYT of Hopkinton, NH) may have been Jonathan BROWN (b. 2/24/1700, Hampton, NH) and Joanna Abbey (Abba) (b. 11/15/1706, Exeter, NH) -- daughter of Joseph ABBEY & Abigail SEVERANCE of Salisbury, MA. Here are my questions: 1. Does anyone know if this information is correct and can be verified? 2. Does anyone have any ancestral information about Joseph Abbey & Abigail Severance (such as pertinent dates, names of parents, other children, etc.)? 3. Does anyone know who Jonathan BROWN's parents were? 4. If this information is not readily available, can you suggest sources where I may be able to find verification? (I live down south and do not have access to New England resources.) I am posting this query to three lists in hopes of generating a response or two. For you 'multiple listers,' I ask your patience. If I can help anyone with Joanna Brown's descendants, I'm happy to do so. Thank you in advance to any and all who are able to help me. Sincerely, Pamela Rhett Molzan Charleston, SC Pilgrimpjm@aol.com

List: Thanks to Mary Woodman, I now have the connection between the John SINCLAIR of Hampton and his grandfather of Exeter. Actually, I now find the answer was correctly contained in GDMNH (pg. 635) all along, but I missed seeing John of Hampton listed as a son of James of Exeter. -- Dick Marston
In my previous message I inadvertently failed to refer also to: Noyes/Libby/Davis, "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire," (1939), pg. 635 (SINCLAIR, #3). -- Dick Marston
List: Speaking of SINCLAIRs, I guess I mistakenly assumed that the John SINKLER/SINCLAIR/SINCLAIRE of Hampton who married Ann CHASE, was one and the same as the John SINCLAIR of Exeter. GDMNH provides the evidence that Ann married a John SINCLAIR as her 2nd husband. Both Dow's History of Hampton and Sanborn and Sanborn's Vital Records of Hampton provide evidence that John and Ann SINKLER/SINKELER/SINCLARE/SINCKLER had 4 daughters born there. But the John SINCLAIR of Exeter appears to be an entirely different person. Further, there is no support to be found in Hampton's records for GDMNH's claim that John of Exeter's 2nd wife, Deborah, was admitted to the Hampton church from Exeter on 14 Nov 1697. Anyone have any thoughts or information that will further clarify and identify this (these) John(s)? I refer in particular to: Noyes/Libby/Davis, "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire," (1939), pg. 139 (CHASE, #5); and Sanborn and Sanborn, "Vital Records of Hampton, New Hampshire, to the End of the Year 1900," (1992), vol. 1, pgs. 42, 47, 53 and 147. Thanks for any help. -- Dick Marston
