    2. High Seas
    3. Hello Pamela, Historian Charles Brewster in ":Rambles About Portsmouth." vol. 1, [1859], gives us some background on George Jaffrey. Brewster tells us that Newcastle was part of Portsmouth until 1693. Just past the bridges leading from the limits of Portsmouth into Newcastle the homes of a number of prominent citizens stood to include the "...Honorables Sampson and Jacob Sheaf, Theodore Atkinson, George JAFFREY..." On pg.84, Brewster is quite specific as he makes reference to the south part of the island and at least in 1859 one could yet see the "early Jaffrey residence," the original residence having been constructed "about 180 years ago..." Perhaps someone on our list will have more complete and current knowledge of Newcastle/Portsmouth landmarks and sites that may relate to the Jaffrey-Wentworth names; and what might be known of the JEFFRIES family that you also mention. Good luck on your searches... Bob Jackson ---

    1. George JAFFREY of Newcastle, NH
    2. Hey Y'all, Greetings from South Carolina. I am searching for information regarding my New England ancestors (I have a 'passel' of 'em) and it's next to impossible to find any books about New England in this part of the South (Charleston). The Library and the Historical Society here don't share my belief that folks down here would be interested in northern historical and genealogical books! But that's another issue! I am writing to this list in hopes someone can help me find info about George JAFFREY of Newcastle, Rockingham, NH. I descend from George 'the immigrant' through his son Hon. George JAFFREY, Chief Justice of New Hampshire (b. 11/22/1682 in Newcastle; d. 5/8/1742 in Portsmouth). He married Sarah JEFFRIES of Boston (my ancestor), and later Sarah Wentworth, daughter of John Wentworth, Lt. Governor of NH. Any information would be welcomed. Sincerely, Pamela Rhett Molzan Charleston, SC Pilgrimpjm@aol.com

    3. According to an unpublished history of the Carter family in Newton (attributed to Thomas Morrill Carter, a famous bandmaster in Boston), there was a fifth generation Nathaniel, born 1761, son of John (1715) who married Sally Hoit of Kingston. They had 8 children, the 4th of which was Sally, who may have married a Colby. You might find more information in the Colby or Hoit/Hoyt genealogies. By the way; I found no reference to Sally Hoit in any of the Kingston books. Hope this helps.
