Bill, One reason a person was disowned by the Quakers was that they married outside the faith. ---Robin
Christine, Join the club of those with ancestors lost in Epping!!! I'm not familiar with the cemetery you mention, but I have similar problems with my own Epping families. Quite frankly, very few of the earliest settlers in Epping could afford proper gravestones. Their graves are probably marked with uninscribed field stones or are unmarked. << It doesn't appear to me that whoever did this research actually went over the fence and explored to see if they could find anything. I don't know how they know it is a Cook-French cemetery.>> I can testify that the Williamsons, who did the research, were very thorough. If it says there are no visible stones in the cemetery, then I doubt you could find any. Since there are no stones, I'm not sure how this was identified as a Cook-French graveyard, but it probably came from old town records or from deeds. If you are trying to locate graveyards in New Hampshire, The New Hampshire Society of Genealogists, in cooperation with the New Hampshire Old Graveyard Association has a master listing on their web site, http://www.tiac.net/users/nhsog/. Click on "N.H. Old Graveyard Association database" and then on "NHOGA Master Burial Site Listing". The graveyards are indexed by town and by graveyard name state-wide. The web pages have the UTM coordinates for plotting the location on USGS maps. The amount of information is limited, but these pages can help you find these old graveyards fairly easily. The UTM coordinates for your particular graveyard are E33491, N477007. There is an explanation on the NHSOG web site of how to use these coordinates. I don't know when I will be in Epping next, but I will try to locate the graveyard next time I'm passing through. Regards, Clark Bagnall Recording Secretary New Hampshire Old Graveyard Association
Cousins and Colleagues... Perhaps someone could help me with this. I note that, from the Friends Records it is not uncommon to see a person mentioned as "disowned" and, on some occasions a subsequent "restored." Does "disown" mean that a person has been removed from membership in the Friends ? Bill -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William F. Cousins and Colleagues... Warren Ladd's book, p. 50, has Nathaniel Ladd of Epping marrying Polly Smith in 1782 with one of his children having been born June 6, 1786. The Epping Town Records (NHGR, 4:86) have Nathaniel Ladd and Dolly Smith beng married August 4, 1793. If the records are correct in both instances, this would suggest that there were two Nathaniel Ladds of about the same age marrying a Smith with given names that are frequently interchanged. The parents of the first Nathaniel were Paul and Mercy (Hilton) Ladd. Does anyone have information on the parents of the second Nathaniel? Any help greatly appreciated. Good Morning Rockin Rooters! I was in Epping recently and found the following information at the library. It was raining and I didn't have a really good map, so I wasn't able to locate this cemetery. I'm back in California now and it's killing me because I just KNOW that my ancestors must be in that cemetery. I know my ancestor Hezekiah Cook must be buried in Epping somewhere and his son Hezekiah married Eliza French. It doesn't appear to me that whoever did this research actually went over the fence and explored to see if they could find anything. I don't know how they know it is a Cook-French cemetery. Is there any adventurous person out there who would be interested in checking out this cemetery???? If so, PLEASE contact me. Thanks so much for your consideration! Hi folks: After lots of work digging up family roots in LA, MO, lately also in Germany, France and Spain, I now uncovered an ancestor whose obituary states he was born in Rockingham County. He is Jeremiah CLARK b. 1806. The obituary also states he graduated as civil engineer from Dartmouth College in 1824 (at the age of 18)? Some historic records show he was appointed surveyor of lands in Illinois by President Jackson and then later moved to Missouri to do surveying work there. Initial checks with Dartmouth College show no CLARK graduating in 1824 and no CLARK appointed by President Jackson in Illinois. So I some more wok to do on these fronts. Meanwhile all I know about his birth is that it seems to have been in 1806 and in Rockingham County. I have read some of your postings for a couple of days and have yet to see a mention of a CLARK. Is there anybody with any information about that family who participates in this group? Or anyone who can steer me in the right direction on where to look? Thank you for all information you sent my way. Happy hunting from sunny Orlando. Paul F. Van Mechelen
Rooters: I sometimes like to think that I know everything about everything where Hampton, N.H., is concerned, but I sure don't. Just this morning I learned for the first time that Bill Teschek has launched a huge new project to put Hampton wills on-line. He needs volunteers, if you are interested and willing to help. Ellen Bisson of this list is the first to jump on the band wagon. She has already helped, big time. Check out the page at: [ http://www.hampton.lib.nh.us/hampton/history/probate/index.htm ]. Give them a hand if you can. Bill can be reached at: [ bteschek@hampton.lib.nh.us ]. Speaking of the Hampton pages, tomorrow (7/29), Bill will be uploading the newest update of the Hampton database, and it will include one of Hampton's most famous descendants, Sir Winston Churchill. Of course, most of you BERRY and PHILBRICK cousins already know about the connection, but this puts "Sir Winnie" on a list which includes a lot more people than are shown on my "Famous Cousins" list. Further, I'm constantly finding and correcting errors which I've previosly made, or changes I've failed to make. For instance, previous links to English ancestral pedigrees which were all bad, have finally been updated. As I get new queries, I sometimes also find other family connections which had been omitted for various reasons. BOTTOM LINE: Don't assume that what you've seen before is still the same. -- Dick Marston, Marston Manor, [ http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1638/ ]; Rockingham County, NH, GenWeb County Coordinator, [ http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/1706/ ]; Administrator: NHMERRIM, NHROCKIN and MARSTON mail lists
Fred and Bill, p. 76 of Volume I of the Folsom Genealogy states: "12. Jonathan Folsom (Dea. John2, John1) b. in Exeter, N.H. abt. 1685; d. Feb. 1740; yeoman; m. Anna Ladd (dau. Of Nathaniel, and granddaughter of Hon. John2 (Edward1) Gilman). The Mary LADD that married Jacob GILMAN may have been a daughter of Ezekial Ladd and Mary Folsom who was born 17 Jan 1690. Ezekial was a son of Daniel and Ann Ladd. Mary Folsom was the daughter of Samuel2 and Mary Robie Folsom who just happen to be my progenitors. Wading through the names during the period can be exasperating at best. The FOLSOMs, LADDs, GILMANs, DUDLEYs and THINGs were very much intermarried and given names were used and reused in a way that makes you wonder if they were deliberately trying to confuse their descendants. Dear Mr. Prokasy: There is a "Jacob Gilman" and "Mary Ladd" of Kingston who had 9 children but not a Moody. They are shown at #24 of the Ames, Gilman Family Book which was just republished by Heritage Co. as reedited by Wayne Gilman. This shows 9 children but no "moody". daughter Elizabeth b: 1715 married married a David Moody... you don't mention your source but I find no person such as "moody" in any of my Gilman sources or my data base. Jacob was a son of either John or Daniel and a grandson of Edward2 Gilman (lost at sea gilman). U of Chi Prof Gilman and several prominent genealogists studied the descendants of Edw. "lost at sea" and were unable to separate the children of John from the children of Daniel. Are you a Gilman? I am building a Thing, Gilman, Dudley data base and am writing a "Thing" book.?
