    1. RE: Nathaniel Weare and /Elizabeth Swain(e)
    2. Cindy Walcott
    3. I have the following in my database: Nathaniel Weare, born 1631 in England, son of Nathaniel and Sarah (_____) Weare of Newbury, MA. He married Elizabeth Swain, also born in England, dau. of Richard and Bassille (_____) Swain. This is probably the Richard Swain, age 34, who came from London in the Truelove in November 1635, although the age does not seem correct. He was granted land in Hampton, NH in December of 1639. In 1641, he had a thirty acre grant in Exeter. In July 1659 he was a purchaser of Nantucket Island. The following November, he was fined there for entertaining Quakers. The Hampton church excommunicated him in 1668 as a Quaker (Noyes et al, 1996, p. 669). Sons William and Francis preceded them to New England (Dow, 1893, p. 985). 1. Nathaniel Weare and /Elizabeth Swain(e)
    2. It is highly improbable that Nathaniel Weare was born on Nantucket in 1631 since the first permanent settlement on Nantucket was in 1659 when the Starbuck and Macy families along with John Coleman spent the first winter on the Island. Is sounds as if whoever originally produced the information you aquired from the family history center just plugged Nantucket into the birth place. 1. Felbrigge/Philbrick
    2. This is for Mahalo and Kevin and anyone else interested in the Philbrick families of Hampton. According to Blomfield (Hist. of Norfolk, vol. 8, p. 89), the family of Felbrigge of Felbrigge, near Comer in Norfolk, descended from Simon le Bigod, youngest son of Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk (died in 1224/5), and his wife Maud, daughter of William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. Simon married Maud, daughter and heiress of Richard de Felbrigge of Felbrigge, and their descendants took the name of Felbrigge or Fylbrigge from their manor. Roger, son of Simon and Maud, occurs in 14 Edward I (1286/7) as "Roger Bigod de Felbrigge" (Blomfield, op. cit.). The Felbrigges long continued as a prominent knightly house at Felbrige and cadet branches established themselves in the neighboring counties of Huntingdon and Suffolk, and it is quite likely that the Bures family derived from the same stock. The Felbrigges do not appear in Bures until the first quarter of the sixteenth century, but in the neighboring Essex parish of Earls Colne (three miles from Bures) we find a Felbrigge family established early in the fifteenth century, and there can be little doubt that the Bures family descended from them. A century earlier, in 14 Edward I (1285/6, a Lawrence de Felbrigge was murdered outside of Bures (Assize Roll 833, m.43, Placita Coronae 14 Edward I), so it would appear that the family were in and about Earls Colne and Bures at this date. In view of the early date at which they appear here, it would seem that perhaps the Earls Colne family descended from a cadet of the earlier family whose heiress married Simon Bigod. It is also possible that their ancestor may have been a free tenant at Felbrigge and that he took the name when he went south into Suffolk and Northern Essex. In any event, the origin of the Earl Colne and Bures Felbrigges still remains uncertain. (Source: NEHGR, Vol. 108, 1954, pp. 252-253) Maryellen Mcanfora@aol.com

    1. Shingles and ships, ca. 1765-1770; SEARS, COFFIN
    2. David G White
    3. One of my ancestors was "Captain" Paul-5 (Paul-4,3,2, Richard-1) Sears who was born at Rochester, MA, about 1722 and died either at sea or in New Jersey (at Little Egg Harbor?) about 1770. This Paul Sears married Parnel Hammond at Rochester (marr. intention 30 Nov 1755). Parnel lived in New Jersey with her children after Paul's death and married (2) William Coffin and (3) Burdsall Tyler. Here is a quotation from a genealogy by Mary Elizabeth Sinnott, "Annals of the Sinnott, Rogers, Coffin, Corlies, Reeves, Bodine and Allied Families" (Philadelphia, 1905), pp. 75-76: "About 1765, a company was formed at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to manufacture shingles from cedar procured from the cedar forests in southern New Jersey. This company sent men to fell the trees and cut them into shingles, and also sent out vessels to transport the shingles, or cedar logs, from New Jersey to New England and elsewhere. One of such vessels was "The Adventure," commanded by Captain Paul Sears, and on one of its voyages, about the year 1768, William Coffin was a passenger, being sent out as the agent of the company mentioned. He eventually settled near the cedar forests, and from entries in an old account book kept by a merchant in that day, it is found that for some years he purchased provisions for the supply of those engaged by the company which he represented. The last entry of purchase is in the year 1779, and it is thought his death occurred at about that time. Captain Sears [had] removed his family from Rochester, Massachusetts, to the locality in which Mr. Coffin lived, but was soon after lost at sea, leaving to survive him a widow and several children. Mr. Coffin married his widow, Mrs. Parnel (Hammond) Sears...." I would like to verify that there was such a company manufacturing shingles at (or near) Portsmouth at this time (about 1765-1770) and if so, whether or not any records of that company have survived. Also, are there Portsmouth port records which might show entries for the ship "The Adventure"? Any help or suggestions as to sources would be greatly appreciated. Dave

    3. Dick: In reply to your advise, I'm an attorney, practicing law and also a genealogy hobbiest. My name, address and phone numbers are always freely available and I desire that they so be so people can contact me in the most convenient manner possible. I've had contacts by phone, e/mail and fax and mail. You'd be amazed at the number of faxes and mail. I understand your concern and maybe if I wasn't in business it would bother me. It really irritates me when people sent me messages with a coded e/mail, don't give their name and address and expect me to give them information. I'm in the information exchanging business and desire to help all persons who are interested in Things and Gilmans and Norrises and Dudleys and a few other more ancient ancestors from the Exeter NH area and hope that people who want information are willing to help me complete my descendant lists from Jonathan Thing the immigrant; Edward the immigrant Gilman, and the good old gov. Thomas Dudley. Actually, once I get a name and town I can usually get the other information, but this business about privacy really burns me as most people have nothing to be private about. Very truly to all E. Frederick C. Gain Attorney at Law 1731 So. Park St. P.O. I give visitors information and help.... and have a load of buckshot for any burglars. Although I don't live in New England, I've been to Epping several times (last month most recently) and find it a very delightful suburb of Exeter, NH, set in the pretty NH hills. 3. There are 32 cemeteries in Epping if my count on the geodetic map back in the 60s was correct. Many were in fields that are now forest. If anyone has an interest in Tilton family I can describe where it is.
