Can anyone tell me if there may be a connection with Issac Brown b in Poplin in 1767 to Isaac Bown b. in Fremont Ny 1800? I think that I may have been on the right track in the begining. If the Isaac in Poplin married a marry which I can not find. It could be possble that he is the missing link that I am looking for. Thanks for any help in advance that I can get. Hello: I am taking a trip to Chester, NH in the next few weeks and could use some help. I am the descendant of Capt. Abel Morse (1692-1763) and Grace Parker (1693-1755) and their son, Abraham (1733-1807). I understand that they are all buried in a cemetery in Chester. Could anyone tell me which one and possibly how to get there? Also, any suggestions on where to go for local research in very limited time? I would appreciate any assistance with this. Delynn Morse Flinn
I came across a TILTON refs (URL below) with a writeup about Charles O. Tilton, s/o Green and Maria Smith Tilton, natives of "Hampton County, NH" and Seneca County, OH. Apparently Grandfather Tilton, unnamed, left NH for VT and NY and then headed west. John Tilton, also s/o Green and Maria Smith Tilton is also profiled. Both profiles can be found at: http://genweb.net/~leesue/WCrane2.htm Regards, Ellen Knowles Bisson
Thank you very much for checking this out. I know I saw two separate references to this graveyard. One said something like "It IS there", which indicates that someone else had also questioned whether or not it really is there. I don't have it in front of me, though, so don't remember exaclty what it said. There is a Towle-Cook connection [see below]. So that makes me wonder further. I recall from the census records that the David Cook entry was one of the last entries for Epping, which might indicate that they DID live in the outskirts. It would be interesting to try to determine where they lived. I believe the D. in David D. is for Davis. FYI, David's parents may not be recorded correctly, but this is what I have come up with. It is hard to find anything on my Cooks. We have wondered if our line might have been Quakers, since others in the family were, or were they Baptists? DAVID D.6 COOK (JOHN5, NATHANIEL4, NATHANIEL3, PETER DOWNES2, JOHN1)1 was born Abt. 1816 in Middleton, NH> Epping, Rockingham, NH2,3, and died 01 December 1890 in Brentwood, NH4. This is probably more than you care to know, but the following is the Cook-French connection that I KNOW of. There is some question as to whether or not I have this Hezekiah with the right parents too. He could be David's brother istead of son of Hezekiah [my Hezekiah]. We found more Cook children in Epping than the earlier census records indicate were there. I BELIEVE there was a widow Cook, possibly remarried, living in Epping whose children show up in later Epping as heads of household, ie. David D. & William D., for example. It has been an interesting puzzle, but frustrating too. Perhaps, if you take a look at this, you will stumble upon something regarding these families in Epping while doing your research. I hope to get back there this summer. Generation No. 1 1. Christine, Back in July, you asked about the Cook/French graveyard in Epping. I had a chance to visit this graveyard on Saturday. It was quite an adventure. The graveyard is on Dimond Hill Rd. at the intersection of an old rangeway. Neither of these roads is passable without 4wd, and then you would be stretching your luck, especially with all the rain we have had lately. I found the site, and its location matches the information in the Epping cemetery book and in the NHOGA database. In addition I had along my GPS to verify the location. However, I am not convinced that this site is actually a graveyard. The only evidence is a series of cut granite posts along the stone wall. Yet these posts do not enclose anything. The are all in a straight line and don't appear to be fencing for a graveyard. They extend for quite a few yards -- much too long. There have never been many people living in this part of Epping, so there would never have been a need for such a large graveyard. The land behind the fencing is much to rough to have been used for burials. There is no sign of any gravestones, not even field stones. Finally, if this area was used as a graveyard, it is very old. The use of cut granite as fence posts is not historically consistent with such an early period. Thus I would rather doubt that there is anyone buried at this site. If there is other evidence to suggest that there was a graveyard on the land, I would look elsewhere. The piece of property that contains this site is a large tract of woodland. It would be very easy to lose track of a graveyard in the underbrush. There is supposedly another graveyard on this same lot, further south along Dimond Hill Rd. -- a Towle graveyard. Since I am looking for Towles In Epping, I searched for this one also. When the Epping cemetery book was researched, they were not able to locate this graveyard. I did not have any better luck. I will try to find out more about both of these sites. Regards, Clark Bagnall
Cheryl, << 1. Mary Jane Rowe, born 19 August 1838 in Franklin, NH, USA; died 19 September 1898 in Newton, Rockingham, NH, USA. >> Do you have her death certificate? If she died as late as 1898, her parents names should be listed. How sure are you of the date and place of birth? Since you don't have the parents' names, I assume you don't have a primary source birth record. Do you know what part of Franklin? If it's in the part that was originally Sanbornton, you could try Runnels' "History of Sanbornton" which has a extensive genealogical section. If you have trouble locating this book, let me know and I can do a look-up. Regards, Clark Bagnall
This collection is being auctioned on EBay right now. I thought it might be of interest to someone on this list. Item #160455170 A fascinating collection of about 100 letters, documents and notes to and by Civil War General Gilman Marston mostly during the years following the war (the earliest piece dates from 1839). Marston was a practicing attorney, State Representative and U.S. Senator from New Hampshire during this period. This correspondence is mostly handwritten and gives insight into the legal and sometimes political matters of the day. This cache deserves further study. I just found out I descend from Nicholas Lissen thru his daughter Mary and Alexander Gordon . I had known before my ancestor John Sinkler/Sinclair worked for him . I could not find out much about Nicholas except he owned some sawmills . I remember reading he came from Scandonavia. Would anyone have any information on him ? Mahalo , Kevin
Cousins and Colleagues My web page,http://www.arches.uga.edu/~wprokasy/home.htm, has again been updated with some expansion and additional documentation and notes, this in part due to the excellent help I've received on this list. The principal foci for the 17th and 18th centuries are families settling in Essex County, MA and Rockingham County, NH. with the 19th century focused mainly on northeastern Ohio. As with any work in progress, corrections of fact and additional documentation are welcome. Bill -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William F. Tom, <<I show Sally's parents as Ebenezer, born 1746 in Kensington, NH and deceased 1833 in Alexandria, NH.>> The Ebenezer Clifford b. 1746 in Kensington is not the same person as the Ebenezer who lived in Alexandria. Ebenezer(5) Clifford, (Samuel(4), Samuel(3), Israel(2), John(1)), b. Kensington, NH, 29 Oct. 1746, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Gove) Clifford [NHVR], (although Kensington Church records give his date of baptism as 2 Nov. 1745). He lived in the old Gilman garrison in Exeter, NH and died in Exeter, 19 Oct. 1821, ae. 75. [Gravestone]. He married Anna Healy; they did not have a daughter Sally. This Ebenezer is the noted architect. He designed both houses and several significant public buildings during the Federal period. Ebenezer(5) Clifford, (John(4), John(3), Israel(2), John(1)), bapt. E. Kingston, NH, 28 Feb 1745 (1744/5 or 1745/6?), son of John and Elizabeth (Sleeper) Clifford [E. Kingston Church records]. He was of Salisbury, NH in 1776 when he served in the Revolution and signed the Association Test, and had removed to Alexandria by 1779 [Grafton, Deeds]. Hi: I'd like to send one last reminder that my ISP has been changed and my email address is now dick@marston.net . Unfortunately, I'm having a problem with my former provider in that, although they confirm that the account is closed, messages sent to rwm@ktb.net do not get bounced back to the sender as undelivered. Of course, this gives the false impression that I have received it. So far, they have not forwarded any such messages, either. If you still have me on a personal email list at the old address, please change it, or remember that "I told you so" the next time you send me a query for posting.
