    1. Early wills from other NEngland states
    2. Ellen Bisson
    3. OK, Dick, I'm prepared for a reprimand because this is not technically a Rockingham issue, but just in case... Early NH wills are transcribed in volumes of the NH State Papers series, origs available in Concord, but most of these documents were initially filed/recorded in MA. Many of our Rockingham families have origins in MA. Were MA wills also transcribed and are they available in volumes similar to our NH State Papers series? Thanks, Ellen Knowles Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net

    3. Gregg, I expect that you'll hear from everyone and their cousins on this, but.... Newbury, NH is located mostly in Merrimack County with just a wee corner jutting into Sullivan County. On the other hand... There's also a Newbury, VT in Orange County. Sherry

    3. This is a great web site for Nicknames. It also has links to roots for given names. For example, I wasn't surprised to find that Thomasine is the feminine form of Thomas, but I was a little surprised to find that Thomasine is a nickname for Tamzen, which is also a feminine form of Thomas. So, now I understand why the wife of one of the Seavey Immigrants is referred to as Tamzen, Thomasine, Tamzin, and frequently Thomasine/Tamzen. 1. MANN family of Portsmouth
    2. Virginia Basken
    3. Hi all, I am a new subscriber to this list. My MANNs start, as far as I can determine, with Peter(1) MANN who appears in the records in Portsmouth, about 1687, when he is mentioned in the will of his Uncle, Michael Martin. I have a pretty good idea of how the descendancy through the MANNs (three Peters and two Josephs) goes, but I need to fill in some blanks. Specifically, I am trying to identify the ancestry of the second wife of Peter (3) MANN (1727-1793). Her name is Elizabeth EMERY. I am currently working on the theory that she is the daughter of Joseph EMERY of Kittery. Elizabeth MANN died in 1792 "in her 52nd year" and Joseph EMERY had a daughter, Elizabeth, who was born in 1740. Also, looking for the family of the wife of Joseph(4) MANN (1769-1806) who's name is Elizabeth PITMAN. Joseph obtained guardianship of one Theodore Pitman in 1801. Theodore was the son of Nathaniel PITMAN. Nathaniel and his wife had a daughter, Elizabeth in 1767. My supposition is that Elizabeth is Theodore's older sister. I have had great good luck in tracking down this whole family, mainly by the use of probate, deed, and court records. Vital records of this area aren't too helpful, as they are so spotty. I have also had success with published church records, and with newspapers on microfilm at the Portsmouth Public Library. Besides the other surnames I mentioned, this family intermarried with the Fernalds, the Kennards, the Melchers and the Fitzgeralds. If anyone is researching any of these names, I will be happy to check my records for whatever I have on them for you. Regards, Ginny ginnyb@tiac.net http://www.bearclaws.basken.com

    1. BATCHELDER; 1755-1800; No. Hampton > Deerfield, Rockingham co., NH
    2. John Clement
    3. Surnames: BATCHELDER, DALTON, COTTON, HUTCHINGS Seeking the descendants of Stephen BATCHELDER; b. 19 Jan 1755 at North Hampton, New Hampshire; son of James BATCHELDER and Mehitable DALTON; m. Sarah COTTON, daughter of Thomas COTTON, at New Hampton, New Hampshire; d. 6 Mar 1847 at Exeter, Maine, at age 92. He is listed in the Batchelder Genealogy as number 395, pp. 183- 184. Stephen Batchelder resided in Eppingham (sic), New Hampshire and Jonesboro, Maine (Batchelder Genealogy, pp. 183). I am convinced Eppingham is a typo and should have been Effingham; also I can not confirm that he was ever in Jonesboro, Maine. I can not find any town in NH named Eppingham. Someone arbitrarily changed Eppingham to Epping and placed five of the children as born in Epping, NH (Ancestral File numbers 18KM-MS6, -MQR, -MPK, -MRO, -MTD) which will certainly confound any researcher using Ancestral File. The U.S. Census schedules show Stephen living in Deerfield (Rockingham county) (1790-1800) and Effingham (then Strafford, now Caroll county) (1810), New Hampshire; and then Wellington, Somerset county, Maine. So it is probable that at least the first five children were born in Deerfield, NH and not Epping. In his 1832 pension application as a veteran of the Revolutionary War, Stephen Batchelder stated he was born in North Hampton, New Hampshire and after the war lived at Deerfield, NH until 1800; then to Effingham, NH until 1827, then to Wellington, Maine. (Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files (Waynesboro, Tennessee : The Nat'l Historical Publishing Company, 1990), 1:107). Children of Stephen Batchelder and Sarah Cotton were as follows. Children i thru v listed in the Batchelder Genealogy, pp. 183- 184. Unknown presumed daughters vi and vii picked up from the U.S. Census schedules. i. Sarah BATCHELDER, probably born 1785-1790 (1800 census). ii. John BATCHELDER, probably born 1785-1790 (1800 census). iii. Cotton BATCHELDER, probably born 1785-1790 (1800 census). iv. Mary BATCHELDER, probably born 1790-1800 (1800 census) v. Stephen BATCHELDER; b. 6 Oct 1791 at North Hampton, New Hampshire; m. Betsey HUTCHINGS 31 Oct 1819 at Wakefield, New Hampshire. He is listed as number 950 in the Batchelder Genealogy, p. 250. I have extracted his descendants from this genealogy. My main interest lies in his siblings. vi. Presumed unknown daughter BATCHELDER, probably born before 1790 (1790 census) vii. I would like to share the information I retrieved from a book titled GRIFFINS OF FRANKLIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE found at the NH State Library. Other sources have been noted. Do we share any branches of this family tree? Sue Descendants of Humphrey Griffin Generation No. 1 1. HUMPHREY1 GRIFFIN was born Abt. 1605 in prob. England, and died Abt. 1661 in Ipswich, MA. He married ELIZABETH ANDREWS Abt. 1634, daughter of ROBERT ANDREWS. Notes for HUMPHREY GRIFFIN: Humphrey Griffin, immigrant, was born about 1605 and first appears in our colonial history in 1639, in the plantation of Ipswich, where it is written in the records: "The Town doth refuse to receive Humphrey Griffin as an inhabitant to provide for him as inhabitants formerly received, the Town being full". But our Humphrey Griffin did not appear in Ipswich in the quality of medicant, asking support, nor even seeking a share in the division of lands there, and notwithstanding the town's decree he soon became a commoner by purchase, January 1641, of the house and land formerly owned by David Denison, "near the mill which was granted to Denison in 1635; also a meadow at "Labor in Vain" and a planting lot at "Heartbreak Hill". His occupation was that of a butcher and in 1655, was granted "liberty to set up a "shamballs", or slaughterhouse, about twenty feet square, by the pound". In 1659, "the daughter of Humphrey Griffin presumed to indulge in a silk scarf, and her father was fined 10s and court fees". For this offense, our ancestor seems to have suffered more seriously than his townsmen, who "was able to prove his pecuniary ability and his wife wore her silk scarf henceforth unquestioned". Humphrey and his mother-in-law apparently did not always agree and records show two cases in court as a result. Humphrey also paid a fine for harvesting barley before sundown on the Sabbath. However, although refused admission to the town, he was permitted to build a simple house among the ledges in a nearby rough hillside known as Rocky Hill, where he prospered. (Griffin Genealogy) Children of HUMPHREY GRIFFIN and ELIZABETH ANDREWS are: 2. i. JOHN2 GRIFFIN, b. Abt. 1642, Ipswich, MA; d. March 27, 1688, Bradford, MA. ii. ELIZABETH GRIFFIN, b. Abt. 1644; m. JOHN2 GRIFFIN (HUMPHREY1) was born Abt. 1642 in Ipswich, MA, and died March 27, 1688 in Bradford, MA. He married LYDIA SHATSWELL September 17, 1663 in Haverhill, MA, daughter of THEOPHILUS SHATSWELL and SUSANNA BOSWORTH. Notes for JOHN GRIFFIN: John Griffin was amember of the committee chosen by the town of Bradford in 1670 for "ordering, setting up and furnishing" a meeting House; also one of the committee chosen by the town in 1681 for "settling Rev. Zacharieh Symmens in office" and was selectman in Bradford about 1680. According to Hodges' "Soldiers in King Phillip's War", John Griffin of Bradford assigned his war pay in August, 1676, thus indicating that he served in that war. Notes for JOHN GRIFFIN: According to Lyford's History of Concord, "the propritors of Penny Cook held meetings at the house of John Griffin in Bradford in 1728 and 1729 to discuss matters relative to laying out lots, establishing a ferry and to "amend" a new highway between Haverhill and Penny Cook" (now Concord). However, he does not seem to have been a settler there. (Griffin Genealogy) Children of JOHN GRIFFIN and MARY are: 4. i. PETER4 GRIFFIN, b. January 20, 1699/00, Bradford, MA; d. Bef. 1732. ii. He married MEHITABEL EMERSON February 21, 1721/22 in Haverhill, MA, daughter of STEPHEN EMERSON and ELIZABETH DUSTIN. Notes for MEHITABEL EMERSON: The grandmother of Mehitabel Emerson Griffin, Hannah Dustin, and her baby, nurse, and a neighbor's boy were taken prisoner by the Indians near Haverhill, Mass. in late March, 1697. A small group of Indians consisting of two men, three women, and seven children separated from the main band after killing the baby and took their prisoners up the Merrimack valley to an island near Penacook. During the night, Hannah and her companion killed ten of the sleeping Indians - one woman and one boy escaped. Then she returned to Haverhill by canoe and records show that she collected bounty for the ten scalps she had taken. There are monuments to Hannah at Haverhill and on the Penacook island. (Griffin Genealogy) Information on Mehitable's ancestors from Broderbund World Family Tree, Volume 3, Mehitable is individual #218.this sourse has birth date as Dec. 28, 1702. THEOPHILUS5 GRIFFIN (PETER4, JOHN3, JOHN2, HUMPHREY1) was born January 30, 1722/23 in Haverhill, MA, and died September 23, 1814 in Rockingham Co., NH. He married MARY KIMBALL February 13, 1744/45. Notes for THEOPHILUS GRIFFIN: Resided in Sandown. Hammond's Revolutionary War Rolls show Theophilus Griffin aged 50 and John Griffin aged 19 in Capt. Hezekiah Hutchin's Company, Colonel Reed's regiment, in 1775. Batchellor's Revolutionary Documents lists as residents of Sandown signing the Association Test of 1776 to defend the colonies against the British, the following Griffins (Grifen's) Theophilus, Peter, Thomas, Moses, and Richard. Apparently John Griffin went to Northwood to live after his marriage June 8, 1775. It should be noted that there was another Theophilus Griffin, who was a resident of Derryfield and sergeant in general Stark's army in the Revolutionary War. There was also a third Theophilus Griffin who was born in Amesbury, Mass. and resided in Deerfield. These three Theophilus Griffins were probably cousins of varying degrees. JOHN6 GRIFFIN (THEOPHILUS5, PETER4, JOHN3, JOHN2, HUMPHREY1) was born Abt. 1756 in Sandown, NH, and died May 26, 1833 in Northwood, NH. He married MARTHA RAND June 08, 1775 in Deerfield, NH. Notes for JOHN GRIFFIN: Resided in Nottingham, NH. John and his father Theophilus, from Sandown, were in Capt. Hezekiah Hutchin's Company, Col. Reed's Regiment in the Revolutionary War in 1775. Batchellor's Revolutionary Documents also records John Griffin of Deerfield in Simeon Marston's company and Col. John Weldon's regiment in 1776 and on the Travel Roll "when Marcht Febrey 3th 1776 - 140 miles". Apparently John re-enlisted from Deerfield after his marriage in that town and later went to Northwood to reside. The Revolutionary service of this John was accepted by the New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution in the application of Trescott Griffiin, son of John William Griffin IX, for membership. This reportedly names Theophilus and John as father and son. Based on statements by the late John W. Griffin of Epsom and his sister, Mrs. Mary Griffin Walker Stevens of Wilmont, it is here accepted as correct. He married MARY MARIA MCDANIEL, daughter of ROBERT MCDANIEL and NANCY KENISTON. Notes for JOHN GRIFFIN: Historical search of Epsom by Bunker lists John Griffin in Capt. Samuel Collins Company in 1812 War, Three months service, 19 years old at time of enlistment. History of Belknap and Merrimack County also shows John to have been in Capt. Bradberry Bartlett's Company. John was a selectman in 1835 and 1829 and representative to the General Court in 1851. John and his wife Mary are buried in the old family cemetery on the Edminds farm in Deerfield. The writer attended their funerals in 1881 and 1889 and revisited the lot in 1950. The markings on the stones are still legible although surrounded by large trees that fill the lot. Page 6 of book 2.: farmer, age 50, value of land $1500, value of personal property $300. alternate birth year: 1825. Thomas was a farmer in Strafford and a deacon of the Bow Lake Baptist Church. He also did some shoe making in his later years. Although not a large man, he possessed unusual physical strength and had a local reputation as a wrestler and as a cool-headed fire fighter in the days when the "bucket brigade" from a nearby well was the only fire protection. It is related that he saved a building by carrying buckets aloing the top of the roof at night and pouring water on blankets nailed on the end of the building exposed to the fire. He was a man of excellent character and good judgement and recognized by his fellow townsmen as a substantial citizen. Thomas and his wife are buried in the Northwood Ridge Cemetery. 3. THANKS! As I guess all of you know now, I'm the only one who got the bounced messages from Prodigy.com . That's the way it should be, so all is well (almost). Happy hunting! :-) -- Dick Marston, Administrator: NHROCKIN mail list.

    3. Rooters: Could someone please tell me if these "bounced" messages from Prodigy are being broadcast to the entire list? That's the way it appears to me. If so, then something is wrong either at RootsWeb or at Prodigy, and I'm trying to find out what and why. I have written to Rootsweb about the problem. Working correctly, I'm the only person who should get the error message when somebody's mail box is full or when an email address has been cancelled. Thanks!
