    1. NH sign with John Wheelwright
    2. I have a pic of a sign somewhere in NH entitled "Revolutionary Capital." It mentions Rev. John Wheelwright & the town of Exeter. I thought that someone researching this line might like to see it. Email me off list and I'll send a scan of it. Jody

    1. Hannah Dustin 1653-1737 Sign
    2. Hello, I have a picture of a sign taken in New Hampshire. I have no idea where in NH this pic was taken. But I thought that someone researching that line might like to see it. Email me off list and I'll be happy to email a copy. Jody The sign reads; Hannah Dustin 1657-1737 Famous symbol of frontier heroism. A victim of an Indian raid in 1697, on Haverhill, Massachusetts, whence she had been taken to a camp site on the nearby island in the river. After killing and later scalping ten Indians, she and the two other captives, Mary Neff and Samuel Lennardson, escaped down river to safety.

    1. CLIFFORD Conflict, 1713-1736/7, Kingston/Hampton
    2. Dick Marston
    3. According to Hosier, Kathleen E., "Kingston, New Hampshire: Early Families, Patriots and Soldiers," (Heritage Books 1993), at pg. 34, Abigail CLIFFORD, d/o Joseph and Sarah (FRENCH) CLIFFORD, married an Abraham SANBORN in Kingston on 6 Jan 1736/1737. This seemingly conflicts with both Dow, "History of Hampton," and Sanborn, "Genealogy of the Samborne or Sanborn Family." Dow suggests, uncertainly, that Samuel's Abigail CLIFFORD married Abraham, son of Tristram SANBORN. Victor Sanborn agrees that it was Abraham, s/o Tristram, who married Abigail, the d/o Samuel CLIFFORD of Hampton. Both Victor Sanborn and Kathleen Hosier give the same date for the marriage, but only Hosier says where the marriage took place (Kingston). GDMNH would seem to confirm the Hosier view, however, in that it states, at pg. 151, that Samuel CLIFFORD's Abigail's married name was CARR, not SANBORN. These Abigail CLIFFORDs were both born in 1713, but on different dates and in different towns. Do GDMNH and Hosier correct Dow and Sanborn? If so, is it known which CARR Samuel's Abigail married? -- Dick Marston

    1. Toe Game
    2. Anna LeBlanc
    3. My grandmother in East Kingston NH brought a nursery game to our family which I've never heard anywhere else. Her mother, Mary Emma Swett, descended from a long line of Swetts going back to John Swett of Newbury, Mass. I think she was the source of this ditty. Any other descendents from Kingston or East Kingston ever hear this foolishness in their youth? (This may be more anthropology than genealogy!) Start with the smallest toe and work up to the biggest one. Squeeze and wiggle each toe as you recite: Icky Pinny, Pinny Roo, Roo Whistle, Mary Hassel, and (deep voice) Big Tom Bum Bum. 1. Joshua Vickery-update
    2. To all following the saga of Joshua the "falsely accused", I have finally established that he is the son of Elijah and Hannah (Gilman) Vickery of Exeter, although I do not know where he was born. I have also uncovered previously unnamed siblings and confirmed that he is brother to the Elijah Vickery who seved in the Rev War and was husband to Lydia [---]. The land deeds for Rockingham Co contain the trail of evidence. Hannah Gilman, daughter of Joshua Gilman is explicitly named as wife to Elijah in several sales and is identified as mother of Meriah Vickery, spinster (1756, Bk 54, p. 34) in the purchase of a pew in the Old Meeting House from Hannah's mother (now, Mariah (Hersey/Gilman) Gordon, widow of Nicholas Gordon. In 1776 the mother and daughter pair explicitly recorded as wife and daugher of Elijah Vickery purchase of Bradstreet Gilman a dwelling house. The deed which links all parties together is recorded in 1796 (Bk. 141, p. 442) when "...Joshua Vickery of Wakefield" (he disappeared from Hampton Falls in 1792) along with Israel Vickery, Elijah Vickery and Meriah Vickery jointly sell "...twelve acres of land...in said Exeter which our mother bought of John Sleeper..." Through the previously established relation between Meriah Vickery and her mother Hannah to Elijah Vickery, Sr., we can similarly situate her siblings in that same familial relation. Now, to find evidence of Joshua's unrecorded children; or those of Israel, or Elijah, Jr. George Branigan

    3. Those of you with a descent from Jasper Blake of Hampton might be interested in reading the "Great Migration Diary" column by Melinde Lutz Sanborn in the latest NEXUS put out by NEHGS (Nov.-Dec 1999, p.199). It hints at an upcoming Register article by the Sanborns that will prove that Deborah, wife of the emigrant Jasper Blake, was born Deborah Everard, and was the daughter of Sarah Dalton, sister to the emigrant brothers Timothy and Philemon Dalton. The Dalton connection to Deborah Blake has long been suspected, but this may be the long-awaited proof and details. For more we'll have to wait for the Register article (unless George would like to give us a few more tidbits here?) Dick, Could you add these bare details to our Hampton database? 3. If you like I will post your message to the Bartlett list. There are several Josiah Bartlett researchers there and there is an in print "Papers of Josiah Bartlett", although this might not be the kind of thing you'd find there. I think you are more apt to find information in other public records of NH and NY or newspapers of the era/areas. I have, coincidentally I am sure, a Virgil line that connects to my Bartletts. Do you have much Virgil family data from the 19th century? - JL

    2. Sharon King
    3. Last night on PBS's "Antiques Roadshow" an item from New Hampshire was featured that might be of interest to anyone researching this family. It was two wedding portraits done by Zedekiah Belknap (New Hampshire artist) of a young Hale couple. The person who owned them was from Houston (they never give their names)and she said they were her g-g-g-grandparents who married around 1813. The portraits were done on their wedding day. The appraiser said they were probably prosperous farmers who lived in central New Hampshire. This program often has reruns, so if you are interested, you could probably catch this particular show at some time.

    1. Vickery/Gilman
    2. After posting the story of Joshua Vickery and posing my remaining research problems, I followed up on suggestions to track down the Rockingham Co. deeds at NEHGS. I found the following: There were several entries for both Elijah Vickery and Hannah (Gilman) Vickery--none for Joshua. From these entries, it is established that: 1) Elijah Vickery and Hannah Gilman were husband and wife and that she was the daughter of Joshua Gilman and Maria (Hersey). 2) Elijah Vickery makes his earliest purchase of land in 1733 from John Gordon. John Gordon is the second husband of Maria (Hersey) Gilman. She subsequently appears in the record as Maria Gordon. Elijah also purchases land from Joshua Gilman (probably his brother in law), 1742 and sells land to Ezekiel Gilman (probably cousin in law) 1748. He (or another Elijah) sells bits of property from 1742 to 1765, partially to pay debts. 3) Maria Gordon (Hersey/Gilman) sells to her Hannah and Mariah Vickery her pew in the meeting house (1756). This establishes new information: Mariah Vickery is an unrecorded child of Elijah and Hannah. She is called "spinster" in the 1756 sale implying that she is of marriageable age but unmarried (hence, not one of the four recorded daughters born between 1746-1754 mentioned in Bell). The two again purchase a small parcel of land with a dwelling house as late as 1776 from Bradstreet Gilman. Elijah is explicitly mentioned as husband and father. 4) The fact that Elijah Vickery (husband, not Rev War veteran) is not mentioned in either the 1756 or the 1776 sales to Hannah Vickery and daughter, Mariah, is curious. Possibly he is deceased by then. 5) Elijah Vickery's occupation is millwright or housewright. I find no probate records. Does anyone know if there would be court records for such things as debtor proceedings or law suits? George

    1. Annie D. (MOULTON) MARSTON
    2. Dick Marston
    3. Two or three days ago, I believe, I asked for information about an Annie DALTON who married a Frederick W. MARSTON, who was born on Dec. 10, 1863, probably in Portsmouth. One of you asked me if her name was, instead, Annie Dalton MOULTON, who reportedly married Frederick W. MARSTON in Newburyport, Essex, Mass., in 1878. This information came from a film at an LDS Family History Center, probably a submission. Since the source for my original informaion was very sketchy, at best, I had to believe that this new information may very likely be true. Their son's middle name was Moulton, and everything else fits very nicely, too, date-wise (year of marriage & son's d.o.b.). Now that I'm looking for an Annie Dalton MOULTON, I'm wondering if that might ring any different bells out there. Anybody have any confirming or conflicting data about Annie? Since both DALTON and MOULTON are among my ancestral names, I'm hoping to make a new connection. Thanks for any help. -- Dick Marston
