I too have found records of refusals to pay the minister's tax (in Hillsborough, Hillsborough Co., NH) with a number of my ancestors who signed the petitions in the town of Hillsborough. I read these petitions in the town records. Soon thereafter, some of my family left the town after generations of (McNeil's) being there, migrating eventually to New York and then on west. I have long been curious if this was the reason they left. So, I'll look forward to hearing of any books or accounts about this too. Regards, Dianne Butler Lucas
