    1. [NHHILLSB-L] [NHHILLSB] Sally Dodge>1765
    2. Gordon & Jane
    3. I'm looking for confirmation of information I have regarding Sally "Sarah" Dodge. This is what I think I know: Sally Dodge was born 23 Jul 1765 in New Boston, NH to Jacob and Abigail (Edwards) Dodge. She married Isaac Tenney, Sr. on 10 Dec 1789 at a place unknown to me. They were the parents of Abigail Tenney, born 8 Aug 1801 in Bennington, NH. Abigail married Thomas jefferson Brooks in 1822. Can anyone offer evidence confirming the parents of Sally, and her marriage to Isaac? I've read the Dodge Family history by Joseph Thompson Dodge, but his discussion of Jacob seems to end with Jacob's removal from Beverly, MA to New Boston. I would be happy to share what information I have. Gordon Kirkemo kirkemo@olywa.net

    1. [NHHILLSB-L] Joseph Stearns of Deering, 1790-1840?
    2. Jim French
    3. Is anyone researching the Joseph Stearns family in Deering? Did Joseph Stearns have a daughter named Mary/Polly, born in 1791? A Polly Stearns married Noah Farrar Conant, of Townsend, MA in Deering, on April 7, 1810, settled in Deering and had a son, Noah, there in 1792, then moved on to Vermont. Joseph Stearns could have remained in Deering for a number of years. It would be great to share information on him with interested researchers. Thanks, Jim French

    1. [NHHILLSB-L] Need help with a lookup
    2. Linda Knott
    3. Is there anyone on this list who actually lives near Francestown, NH? I'm looking for someone who would be willing to visit the town hall and do some research for me. Here's the problem... I have two marriage certificates: 1. Robert Knott age 26 m. Julia M. Kezer age 21 on April 28, 1878 in Francestown, NH 2. Robert C. Knott age 28 m. Mary C. Chamberlain age 18 on January 1, 1881 in Manchester, NH. Both list Robert's father as Charles Both say 1st marriage My husband thinks they are two different men, possibly brothers. Only there is only one Robert listed to the Charles Knott family. I say it is the same person and that wife #1 died or was divorced in that 2 1/2 year span. I need someone to look up from April 28, 1878 to December 31, 1880 and see if they can find a death or divorce record for Julia M. (Kezer) Knott. I would gladly pay for cost of the certificate, etc. If we can prove that Julia was no longer wife of Robert by December 31, 1880; then he would have been free to marry wife #2 Mary C. Chamberlain on Jan. 1st, 1881. (I have no idea why he would lie that he wasn't married before, unless he divorced Julia and didn't want Mary to know.) Please, is there someone out there willing to help? :-) Linda Whittaker Knott LilBitGal2@hotmail.com http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/5868 England (Lincs, Notts, Dorset)WHITAKER,PINDER,PICKWORTH,KNOTT U.S.:WHITTAKER,LOVE,WEST,CHAPIN,MALOTT,COMSTOCK,ELLIS,FERGUSON KNOTT,GOODWIN,AVERY,CLARK,EVANS,MOCK,ROCHFORD,ALVEY ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Re: [NHHILLSB-L] BLOOD - POWERS, Dunstable MA area
    2. Steve
    3. Vickie, There are several Blood families mentioned in the town history of Merrimack NH. The earliest was Nathaniel Blood. He was one of 26 men who petitioned Massachusetts for land in 1673. The land later became the town of Dunstable. The total landgrant was 128,00 acres and covered a good deal of southern NH. There is no listing for a Lois Blood but a Elnathan Blood had children in Dunstable in 1749 and 1751. If Lois was married around this time, it may have been a brother. Hope this is of some use. 3. Hi Vickie: Having absolutely no source materials or records, but a reasonably good knowledge of the area, I know that there is a BLOOD cemetery in the town of Hollis, which, as you know, was at one time a part of Dunstable, MA, before the establishment of the border in 1740. 1. [NHHILLSB-L] POWERS - Dunstable & Hollis NH to VT
    2. Looking for more info on Jonathan POWERS and Bridget _______ of Dunstable and Hollis NH. Does anyone have more info on his parents? What was Bridget's maiden name? Where were they married? Bridget was born in 1729 and died in 1763 in Hollis NH. I have seen her tombstone, which is next to that of two infants born to Jonathan and his second wife, Susannah WILLOUGHBY, whom Jonathan married in 1764. Jonathan was on the 1790 census of Dunstable NH, but then I lose track of him. I am descended from their son, Jonathan POWERS Jr., who was born in 1759 in Dunstable NH and died in 1840 in Lowell VT. Jonathan Jr. married his first cousin, Rebecca WOODS. He fought in the Revolutionary War. He lived in Dunstable NH, Weathersfield VT, Concord VT, Kirby VT, and Lowell VT. I believe that Jonathan was the son of Jonathan POWERS and Elizabeth KIDDER, who ended up in Mason NH. However, I lack concrete proof of this. I appreciate any help you can give, and I'd love to compare notes with "cousins." Vickie Elam White

    1. [NHHILLSB-L] Maine Censuses -- Where Are They? -- Replies

    3. -------------- My original post: Can anyone tell me where I can look at the Maine censuses for 1800 through 1840? I live in Concord, NH. What are my options? Is there any place in NH? -------------- I got LOTS of replies to the above post and I thank all those who sent me suggestions. Other people have asked me what I found out, so I thought I'd post a summary for the reference of those who live in NH and want to look at Maine censuses. I checked with the NH state library and they have NH censuses only, although they do have indexes for other states, including Maine. Ditto for the New Hampshire Historical Society (NHHS) library. Other suggestions were: LDS church on Clinton Street (must order the tapes, $3.50 each gives you access to them for about a month, then they're shipped back to Salt Lake City) National Archives in Waltham, MA (or Pittsfield) Maine Historical Society, in Portland Maine State Archives, also in Portland Boston Public Library New England Historical Genealogical Society, in Boston Evidently there is nothing on line except for scattered counties and even that is only for 1790. Several libraries -- including the NHHS -- have the INDEXES to the censuses, so you can at least narrow your search down to county and page before you decide where to go for the actual census -- or which ones to order. -- _~o _ o -\<, -\<, (_) /---- / (_) tandem@mediaone.net Dick & Barbara Lemieux Concord, NH

    1. [NHHILLSB-L] Robert Knott
    2. Sherry L Gould
    3. Hi Linda, Cogswell's Henniker Town History (which is known to have errors) lists on page 639: " Charles Knott, son of Robert and Izannah Knott, was b. in Boston April 7, 1828; printer by trade; md., Dec 2, 1850, Eliza Jane Flanders, of this town, who d. July 18, 1862; and he md., second wife, Dec 10, 1865, Ann R. Rollins, who d. April 22, 1878. He d. 1878. Children b. here, save the first one." Pg. 640 "Robert Moore, b. Nov. 11, 1851. Elizabeth H., b. June 29, 1854; md. Thomas Howlett, Bradford. Georgie A., b. Sept. 30, 1855. Thomas, b. Sept 29, 1857. Susie J., b. May 7, 1860 Mary J., b. April 20, 1862; d. Sept. 30, 1862. By second wife. Clemmie M., b. July 2, 1869." >From an index of Historic Cemeteries of Henniker I have Eliza J Knott, 1862 bur. in the Old or Center Cemetery. No other Knotts are buried in the Historic Cemeteries, which probably means that the others are buried in the New Cemetery which is not included in the index. The theory I would want to disprove is that Robert Moore was b. in Weare, whose records are not reliably found at NHVR. That he married 1st Julia and 2nd Mary. Have you checked for a death or divorce of Julia Knott before 1881 perhaps in Henniker or Francestown? I volunteer at NHVR once a month. I would not trust the marriage record statement of first marriage. The state records are really not primary records as they were submitted by town clerks around 1903. They are known to contain transcription errors. Also the town clerk of Manchester, where the possible second marriage took place, would only have Robert's word for which number of marriage this was. That is assuming there really was a record of the number of marriage at the time. I have seen instances where I know the original record does not actually record the number for the birth order of children. Yet the NHVR will say 1st or 2nd child. The clerk appears to have based that on the number of births recorded in their town to that couple. So 1st child could be 5th child when 4 children were born previously in another town. NH Vital Record office has a listing of each town that indicates what record books were supplied to them and what the disposition of those books were. I have not looked at Weare's data on this listing. Have you checked the Town History books for Weare or Francestown? I looked in the Henniker Hist. for Noyes and Flanders. I found Eliza who m. Charles Knott listed as dau of Jonathan Flanders and Amy Wells (who are my husband's ancestors through son Elijah P). So I checked my photo copy of the Flanders family from the Weare Hist. and find Jane who m Charles Knott dau of Jonathan Flanders and Amy Wells. So I checked for what VR's I had found at NHVR on his Flanders and I have Jonathan's birth from Weare in 1793 but no birth for Elijah P. The records just weren't kept well, there were no requirements or standards. The Henniker Historical Society has the records of Francis Childs (he was very accurate) who researched many Henniker families. He corrected much of what is found in the Cogswell's History of Henniker. I have a copy of his work on the Flanders family and under Eliza Jane he says see Knott's genealogy. It would be worth your while to request a copy of that work from the Henniker Historical society. Here are some contact numbers that may help you to further investigate. BUREAU OF VITAL RECORDS 6 HAZEN DRIVE CONCORD, NH 03301-6527 (see what the listing in the research room indicates about Weare's records) Henniker Historical Society 603.428.6267 (for burial/death info on Julia and Child's Knott info) PO box 674 Henniker, NH 03242 Well, it is late and I have rambled on. I didn't know I would find a connection and would have sent this privately, except I thought some of the VR info might be of interest to others. Hope it is helpful, Sherry
