    3. Hello Mason, NH Researchers. I received a letter today from the Mason, NH Historical Society. I quote below: " Dear Friends: This year marks the one Hundredth Anniversary of Old Home Days, which were started in New Hampshire. The Mason Historical Society cordially invites you to join us for a revival of the Old Home Days which be on Sunday, August 22, 1999. We are hoping to contact as many former residents and friends as possible, and we need your help in spreding the word. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please pass this on and send us your list. We shall be doing another mailing in July with further details. This will be a chance to renew old acquaintances and make some new friends, as well as have a great time and more happy memories. Cordially, (signed) Barbara L. 1. [NHHILLSB-L] BUTTERFIELD - CHANDLER, NH 1812
    2. Please ignore past messages about this couple because, due to an error in several town histories, I had the wrong surname for Lavinia. My husband descends from William H. BUTTERFIELD, born 1780-1790, and Lavinia CHANDLER (not CASE, which is what the history of Antrim says), born 1780-1790. They married in 1812 in Antrim, Hillsborough Co. NH. William was described as from Washington, Sullivan Co. NH on their marriage record, and evidently the couple lived there until about 1817. Then they moved to Society Land, Hillsborough Co. NH and lived there until about 1822. Then they moved to Antrim, Hillsborough NH. Lavinia died in 1836, supposedly in Antrim NH. William supposedly remarried. There are two possible re-marriages that could have been him, but I think the most likely one was to Mary Jane BAKER of Goffstown NH. This marriage took place in 1837 in Goffstown. Their marriage record said William was from Francestown NH at the time, so maybe Lavinia died there? Soon afterward, William supposedly moved to MA. He may have moved to the Wayland area of Middlesex Co. MA. Did he follow his son John Calvin BUTTERFIELD or his daughter Ascenathe (BUTTERFIELD) GREEN, who definitely did move there? However, I haven't seen any evidence that he did move to MA, just a sentence in the history of Antrim NH with no documentation. William & Lavinia had the following children: Chandler b. 1812 m. Naomi D. Robinson Luther b. 1814 John Calvin b. 1818 Ascenath b. 1817 or 1820 m. Lewis GREEN (our line) Lucinda b. 1822 Hannah b. 1824 Eliza b. 1826 If the marriage to Mary Jane BAKER was really for this William BUTTERFIELD, then he died (in Francestown rather than MA?) on 13 Jan 1850. He had four more children with her -- Mary Ann Welthea M. Adelaide Charles T. b. July 1846 I'd love to know more about this family. I appreciate any help. Lydia Dodge was b 16 Feb 1790, and d 25 Jan 1862. I have parentage on Lydia, but John Sleeper is a blank. According to _Genealogy of the Dodge Family_ (Joseph Thompson Dodge, 1894) John Sleeper was "a successful farmer in Francestown, N.H." If anyone has a good source or citation for John Sleeper's parents I would be very happy to hear of it. I have found an assortment of general info on the Sleeper family, but can't find this John. 3. ROOTSWEB PUTS IT TOGETHER. Have you ever wished you could look up *everything* at RootsWeb that relates to a particular surname? Now you can! Click on the new option SURNAME RESOURCES at RootsWeb's main page <http://www.rootsweb.com/> or go directly to: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/>. Click on the letter of the alphabet for the surname of interest, and then select it from the list that appears. This will take you to a "surname resource cluster," where you can search for your surname in numerous databases. For example, using BANKSTON you would find: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/a/BANKSTON/>, where you could search "B" WEB SITES, the OBITUARY DAILY TIMES, or: o The ROOTSWEB SURNAME LIST (RSL). RSL search options are by surname, Soundex, or Metaphone (the latter two are "sounds- like" matches). You can search for updates from the past two months, last month, last week, or for any mention. o TRANSCRIPTION PROJECTS. You might check to see if your immigrant ancestors' names are listed at the Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild (ISTG). o PRIMARY RECORDS AT ROOTSWEB (from USGenWeb Archives and RootsWeb Searchable Databases). o GENERAL LINKS AND SEARCH ENGINES. There are three options. o ROOTSLINK link registry. You can add a new link also. o SEEKER search engine, which returns surname matches from Web pages -- there is much "hidden genealogy" that this search will help you find. o SURNAME HELPER search engine finds queries and surname registrations posted at various genealogically-related sites on the Web, with participating sites including many USGenWeb and WorldGenWeb sites. All GenConnect boards are indexed in Surname Helper. o MAILING LISTS. Descriptions of lists that relate to this surname, subscription instructions, and links to the archives so you can search or browse past postings. o GENCONNECT. Click on GLOBAL SURNAME SEARCH to find queries that mention the surname of interest that are posted in connection with any county, state, or country in the world. Or click an icon for one of the seven automated boards that together make up a "suite" of boards available for surnames and localities (Queries, Bible records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, and Wills). RootsWeb hopes that putting these links under one SURNAME RESOURCES roof will help everyone find all the buried treasure. ******* Fred Kunchick GSCS[SW] USN Retired Independent AMSOIL Dealer Pennsauken NJ ICQ# 2000494 kunchick@bellatlantic.net Editor of The Northern KIMBALL On-Line Newsletter Member: NEHGS Camden County (NJ) Historical Society Lo/Lathrop Family Association Kimball Family Association Towne Family Association Home Page: URL: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ridge/7158/index.htm Coos County, NH USGenWeb CC. 1. [NHHILLSB-L] Litchfield & Merrimack NH lookups
    2. Does anyone out there have a history and / or vital records, etc. for Litchfield and Merrimack NH? I am looking for info on Jonathan and Ephraim POWERS. They both appear on Litchfield NH tax lists from 1734 to 1746. Then, in March 1746, part of Litchfield became Merrimack. Jonathan was elected Field Driver for the town at the first Merrimack town meeting on 4 Mar 1746 and Moderator of town meetings in 1747. Ephraim was Tythingman for Merrimack in 1746 and 1754 and Constable in 1750 and 1751. I believe that Jonathan was the son of Isaac and Mary (POULTER) (WINSHIP) POWERS. This Jonathan was born in 1704 in Littleton MA and married Elizabeth KIDDER in 1725. Jonathan and Elizabeth had children recorded in Littleton MA up to 1736. Then there is a gap until, in 1748, a son named John was recorded in the Dunstable NH records as "son of Jonathan and Elizabeth POWERS." Litchfield was originally part of Dunstable, as was Merrimack. Both maintained close ties with the Dunstable, so I don't think it is unusual that at least one of their children was recorded on Dunstable records. An Esther POWERS was "born at Merrimack N.H. Decr. 20, 1745" and married Jonathan CARTER, according to their family bible. They lived in Hollis NH and had, among others, children named Isaac Powers CARTER and Betty Kidder CARTER. It certainly seems to indicate that Esther was the daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (KIDDER) POWERS. Were other children born in Litchfield or Merrimack NH? Where did Jonathan and Elizabeth die, and when? I believe that Ephraim was married to Jonathan's sister Lucy, and was born in 1705 to William and Mary (BAUK) POWERS. Did he have any children born in Litchfield or Merrimack? Where and when did they die? I welcome any input on this. Thanks. Vickie Elam White

    2. Gordon & Jane
    3. Vickie, I have two sources that mention Daniel, but neither gives a full answer to your question. 1. "The Powers Family," by Ralph Crutchett and Isabel Crutchett (1965)provides the following: "He was born at Concord, (afterward Littleton) Mass. May 10, 1669. He married (1) in Concord on April 8, 1702, Elizabeth Whitcomb. He married (2) about 1711 Martha Bates. The date of his death is not upon record and there are no papers on file in connection with the settlement of his estate. He was alive as late as 1730." 2. "Records of Littleton, Massachusetts." Births and Deaths. Committee: George W. Sanderson, Herbert J. Harwood, Edward Frost. It provides the following: "Daniel b. May 10 1669, m. Apr 8 1702 at Concord Elizabeth Whicomb dau. Jon" [Note: there is an "a" following as an exponent, presumbably meaning Jonathan] "m. 2nd about 1710-11 Martha. Removed to Lancaster, d. in Hollis." I hope that is helpful to you. 1. [NHHILLSB-L] RE: POWERS (& Kidder) in Lancaster MA & Hollis NH
    2. Hi: I don't know much about the Powers, but have recently been reading microfilm from Nottingham West, NH (Hudson) and I thought I'd add some of the Kidder's I've run across which are in the Lancaster area. Elder Sampson Kidder is listed on the 1781 tax list; Lieut. Benjamin Kidder and Elder Sampson are on the 1789 tax list (and probably those inbetween). Lois Kidder married a Jonathan Butler in Lyndeborough, N.H. That's my two cents, anyway. Good luck! Your names look as jumbled and overly-populated as my Jonathan Butler's on NH & Mass. 1. [NHHILLSB-L] POWERS in Lancaster MA & Hollis NH
    2. Friends, Bear with me, this is rather long and complex. Today I got my hands on a Powers manuscript written by Rev. Grant POWERS in 1839. He was the son of Samson POWERS of Hollis NH and grandson of Capt. Peter POWERS. Evidently Daniel POWERS lived with his son Capt. Peter POWERS in Hollis until his death in 1754. Capt. Peter died in 1757. Rev. Grant does mention that Daniel was buried near his sons in Hollis. And he also mentions that Daniel didn't move up there until later in life. Supposedly, Daniel moved up to Hollis after the death of his wife, Martha. That is a new lead, since I have been trying to locate her death record. Martha's death isn't recorded in the Lancaster VRs I own, but since the family belonged to the 2nd Lancaster Church (also called Chocksett Church) which was in the western part of Lancaster that became Sterling MA, maybe she died in Sterling. Can anyone check the Sterling VRs for me? I am leaning toward acceptance that Daniel did live and die in Hollis, even with no concrete proof. Sometimes that type of proof just isn't there, but if the History of Hollis plus his great-grandson (and grandson of the man who took care of Daniel until his death) says he died there then that makes for a rather strong case. I look forward to seeing some solid proof (like tombstone inscription or something like that) of Daniel being buried in Hollis, but that may take some digging - no pun intended!<G> However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it was Daniel's son Jonathan (of Lancaster, who married Hannah MOORE) who was the 72-yr. old man who fought in the Rev War for Hollis in 1775. The Powers family genealogy says this man died in Worcester Co. MA in 1775, when a Hannah POWERS, supposedly his widow, took out letters of administration in that county. Also, some researchers claim that the widow Hannah married again, to a Mr. SAWYER. This needs checking. Does anyone out there have access to the Worcester Co. probate index book? Does it mention Jonathan POWERS, Hannah POWERS, or Hannah SAWYER? The Powers genealogy says that Lancaster Jonathan was the man who fought in the Rev War and that there is no record of him after the war. But why would he have fought for Hollis if he lived in Worcester Co. MA? I suppose it is possible that he moved up to Hollis after his youngest son was born in 1754 in Lancaster, then moved back to Worcester Co. MA to be with one of his married children (they all seem to have stayed in that area, although I can't find out where his son Jonathan ended up). It is also possible that he was the Jonathan POWERS who fought at Crown Point with Capt. Peter's Hollis men in 1755. But, if all his children married in Worcester Co. MA, that seems to indicate that he stayed down there, too. I propose that it was Jonathan, son of Jonathan and nephew of Daniel, who was the 72 yrs. old who fought for Hollis during the Rev War. And he was probably the man who was with Capt. Peter POWERS in 1755 (or it could have been Jonathan's son, Jonathan born in 1726). Capt. Peter was his cousin, after all. This Jonathan was the same age as Jonathan, son of Daniel, and married Elizabeth KIDDER. The KIDDER family was from Chelmsford and eventually ended up in New Ipswich, NH. Jonathan, brother of Daniel, had a son Isaac who did move to the Dunstable, NH area and may have married a second wife in Hollis in 1763. I'm checking on that, too. Jonathan, brother of Daniel and husband of Elizabeth KIDDER, supposedly died in Litchfield NH, but I haven't found proof of that. But it does indicate that Daniel's branch was not the only branch to move up to the Dunstable and Hollis area. A widow Elizabeth POWERS was living in the eastern part of Mason, NH on the 1769 tax list. That area is be very close to New Ipswich, NH where her family settled. However, that means that her husband died before 1769 so wouldn't have fought in the Rev War. So, perhaps she was the widow of one of Jonathan and Elizabeth's sons. Or she really was Elizabeth (KIDDER) POWERS and her husband didn't fight in the Rev War. Or she was someone else entirely! <G> To complicate things, there is proof that many men named Jonathan POWERS fought in the Rev War in that area of MA and NH. My husband's ancestor Jonathan POWERS, born in 1759 in Dunstable NH to Jonathan POWERS Jr. and Bridget _____, fought in a Hollis regiment in 1777, as proven by his pension records. Plus the Lancaster Jonathan, son of Daniel, had a son named Jonathan b. 1744. I can't find any trace of him, but he could have fought in the war, since his age is right for it. There was a Jonathan POWERS who fought with a Rowley MA company from 1777 to 1779. Who was he? And was he the same man who mustered in Boston in March 1777 in Col. Nixon's regiment? And there was a Jonathan POWERS, "probably" of Princeton according to __Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution__, who fought with Col. Sparhawk's regiment in April 1775. Perhaps this was Jonathan of Lancaster, son of Daniel? Or perhaps he was his son Jonathan, b. 1744? Are we having fun yet? <G> The Kidder family genealogy says that Elizabeth's husband Jonathan died in 1777, but I don't have a copy of the book to see what proof was found. The Powers genealogy by Amos Powers says the same thing, but no documentation was given. It could be true but....These genealogies and town histories all borrow from one another, usually with no documentation, so it is difficult to figure out the facts. Well, I hope you all can make sense of this. I welcome any input into this. It sure is complicated. But can anyone help me straighten out all of these Jonathan POWERSes, with good solid proof rather than just quotes from published genealogies? Help! <G> Vickie Elam White

    2. My husband descends from William BUTTERFIELD, born 1780-1790, and Lavinia CASE, born 1780-1790. They lived in Washington, Sullivan Co. NH, Society Land, Hillsborough Co. NH, and Antrim, Hillsborough NH. Lavinia died in 1836 and William supposedly remarried, but I don't know when or to whom. He supposedly moved to MA, possibly to the Wayland area of Middlesex Co. MA. He may have followed his son John Calvin BUTTERFIELD or his daughter Ascenathe (BUTTERFIELD) GREEN, who did move there. William & Lavinia had the following children: Chandler b. 1812 m. Naomi D. Robinson Luther b. 1814 John Calvin b. 1818 Ascenath b. 1817 or 1820 m. Lewis GREEN (our line) Lucinda b. 1822 Hannah b. 1824 Eliza b. 1826 I'd love to know more about this family, especially Lavinia's ancestry. Vickie Elam White
