Dan, Thornton's Ferry is one of the villages that make up the town of Merrimack NH. It used to have it's own post office but all the village offices have been consolidated into one now. Thornton's Ferry was named for Matthew Thornton, signer of the Declaration of Independence, who owned a ferry in that section of town. The reference to Litchfield might be because Litchfield and Merrimack were one town prior to 1746. At that time Merrimack was Litchfield West (West of the Merrimack River). I may have some information on the Stevens family. I'll get back to you later tonight, have to go to work now. My great grandmother's death certificate, and my elderly aunt Florence, both say Cynthia Marion STEVENS was born in Thornton's Ferry, New Hampshire. Her marriage liscense says she was born in Manchester. I know Thornton's Ferry does not exist as a town, just a landmark on the map I think. I was told the land is part of Litchfield. Can anyone clear up the Thornton's Ferry story for me? Also, does anyone have information on Cynthia Marion STEVENS; b 19 Oct 1882; daughter of George Franklin STEVENS and Cynthia Anne BAMFORTH. She married Edward Everett HILLS on 10 Jun 1902 in Haverhill, Mass. I know nothing of George Franklin other than when he was elderly and living with his daughter in Haverhill, Mass. and that he was born in New Hampshire. All I know about Cynthia BAMFORTH is that both her parents immigrated from England and that she was born before the move. I made a trip to the Concord genealogy vault. There is no record of these people in the vault. I would imagine the records are out there somewhere. Any help with them would be greatly appreciated. I am living in Okinawa Japan for the next few years so I cannot get to places I would like. Thank you all for the assistance in advance. Dan Hills

Hello List, I am new to the list and would like to introduce myself. My name is Dottie BARR Hinrichs. I have been interested in genealogy for 25 years and found the information in my BARR ancestors in the History of New Ipswich many years ago. Now with the wonderful information to be found on the internet and these lovely mail lists, I hope to find more. My ancestor James BARR was born at Paddockraw (probably the name of a farm), Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was christened 19 August 1749 in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He came to America between 1773 and 1775, settling in New Ipswich. He married Molly Cummings, daughter of Eleazer and Sarah (Reed) Cummings about 1783, they had 14 children: James b 1783 and died in infancy Nancy b 25 July 1784 m Jeremiah Prichard, d 29 9 1864 Sarah b 25 May 1788 m William Lovejoy, d 29 9 1864 James b 23 May 1790 m Laura Livermore, d 6 6 1845 George b 6 Feb 1792 m Amelia Ames Caroline Mathilda b 5 1 1794 m Asa Prichard, d 3 10 1874 Cummings b 9 May 1795 m Eliza Peabody, d abt 1864 Robena b 22 Feb 1799 d 20 Dec 1873, never married Charlotte b 13 Mar 1801 d 27 Aug 1842, never married William b 7 Feb 1803 never married Mary Whitehill b 15 Dec 1805 d 19 Nov 1808, never married John b 10 Mar 1808 m Emily Augusta Smith, d 29 6 1841 Esther Jane b 4 Dec 1810 d 26 July 1837, never married Charles died in infancy John is my ancestor and I have a bit of information about him and his children. I am interested in finding more information about any of James and Molly's children. I do have a little information about who their children married and who their children were from this history. I think it would be very interesting to hear from anyone else that would be working on these families or anyone that could give me more information. I would also like to find out more about New Ipswich. I look forward to hearing from you, Dottie BARR Hinrichs EMail: Mr64Dodg@Sprynet.Com

I am interested in the children of Dea.Ebenezer WOODS (1762-1839) and his wife, Mary HUNT (1763-1853). Ebenezer's line is a collateral one, but he and his children moved to VT and lived near his sister Rebecca (WOODS) POWERS, who was my husband's ancestor. The families sold land back and forth and had other dealings, and I'd like to sort the players. :-) I am particularly interested in Dea. Ebenezer's grandson, Horace WOODS. Rebecca POWERS' husband Jonathan died in 1840 in Lowell VT, at the home of Horace WOODS. Does anyone know which of Dea. Ebenezer's sons was Horace's father? Did Ebenezer and Mary have other children in VT? I have these names, taken from Dunstable VRs and the graves in Lowell VT: Ebenezer Jr. 1785-1867, m. Phebe NOYES William Hunt 1787-1819, unmarried ? Jonathan 1794 - Isaac 1797-1813, unmarried Hephzibah (female) 1799-1819, unmarried Were there other children? If not, who was Horace's father: Ebenezer Jr. or Jonathan? Vickie Elam White
I am interested in Benjamin WOODS (1767 - ? ) and his wife, Bethiah TAYLOR. My husband descends from their son, Oliver. Benjamin married in Dunstable NH and lived there until about 1796, then moved to Lyndon, Caledonia Co. VT by 1800. Dunstable records show 3 children born there (2 boys and a girl), but the 1800 VT census shows he had only 1 boy. I think that this was simply a mistake by the census-taker, but does anyone know if Benjamin's son Benjamin Jr. (born 1792) really did die in VT? Does anyone know where/when Benjamin and Bethiah died and the names of any other children born in VT? I appreciate any help. Vickie Elam White

Opps, sorry for sending my last post to everyone. Steve
Dave, I was going through some files at the Merrimack historical society and came across an alphabetized transcription of Matthew Patten's diary. Matthew Patten was a surveyor and a kind of Justice of the Peace and apparently one of the few in the region that could write. Here are the entries for Joseph Farmer: Sept. 24, 1759 - I coppyd a bond for Joseph Farmer and swore him concerning the same and charged him 30s/unpd Jan. 19, 1762 - I went to Mr. Lutwyches and got 13-10-6 worth from him on Credit and I pid Joseph Farmer 3 pounds old Tenor being what I owed him toward 2 bushell of corn I had from him last year. The rest was pd in writings and 2 acknowledgements. Nov. 30, 1763 - I paid Joseph Farmer a dollar toward the Rie my Wife got from him while I was in the Woods July 24, 1765 - I sent Joseph Farmer the 7 pounds I owed bim for Rie I had from him fall was a year. Feb. 28, 1766 - I went to run lines for James Gillmore and I run as much for Ensn Vickery and Joseph Farmer as I did for Gillmore what I did for them I allowed to pay some Interest that I alowed myself to pay Joseph Farmer on account of some Rie I had from him two year last fall and winter. Gillmor is to pay me in grain if he can spare it Jan 6, 1771 - Jos. Farmer came in the morning and brot us an acct of Capt Barrons Death and I went & Farmer and I made the Coffin and John got 5 shad of yesterdays divide that he did not get till today makes 90 shad this week. June 8, 1771 - I got 447 cabage plants from Jos. Farmer March 5, 1773 - I went to Joseph Farmers and writ two Deeds at hsi place to Jacob McGaw. I charged 1/2 a dollar and I took the acknowledgements for McGaw 2/Lawful and lodged at Alexanders with McGaw June 16, 1773 - I divided Farmers Estate off to him & writ a Deed and a bond and Farmer pd me 6/8 Lawfull for my service. My expences yesterday and today for liquor snuff ferryage etc. was 3-18-0 Hampshire old Tenor. Hope this is of some help. I'll put your name and email on a list I keep of people interested in Merrimack information. If I run across anything of interest I'll let you know.
