Does anyone know anything about the Rev. Jonathan Barnes & what church he was affiliated with? I have ancestors, Adam Nichols & Ruth Atwood, who were married in Hillsborough by Rev. Barnes in 1786. I wanted to find out more information. I did find the following on a web site which lists New Hampshire's Historical Markers: "In 1769, Col. John Hill, a Masonian proprietor, "granted forever" a tract of land in and around this triangle plot to the first settled minister, Rev. Jonathan Barnes, providing locations for the church, meetinghouse, minister's homestead, school, pound, training field, and burying ground. Worthy of note is that descendants of the original grantee still occupy many of these 18th and early 19th century homes. Located in Hillsborough Center, about 3.3 miles north of the intersection of NH 9 and NH 149. " I am trying to figure out who are the parents of Ruth Atwood. I believe she is the daughter of Jonathan & Dorothy (Dolly) Atwood but I need proof. I do know that Jonathan & Dolly lived in Weare area. I also know that Adam Nichols lived in Antrim. Ruth & Adam were married in Hillsborough. I don't know where I'm going with this but the only other clue I have about Ruth is the minister who married them. Thanks for the help. Gwen Brooks, Atlanta, GA
Rev Barnes is mentioned to some extent in the "History of Hillsborough County, New Hampshire compiled by D. Hamilton Hurd in 1885, on page 410. If you don't have access to this work, I will be glad to forward a copy of the text to you. Richard Putnam Milford, NH
Does anyone have information on Col. Moses Nichols (later General, I assume of Militia) from Hillsborough Co., NH? Would be delighted with any help. Incidents in War, Character, etc. Thanks - Tom Moffatt
I have drawn a blank looking for a SALLY/SARAH SMITH who married in Lyndeborough, Hillsborough Co., NH in 1776. Probably born ca. 1756 or 1755. Her husband ENOS UPTON and family are well documented in Mt. Vernon. But nothing on her. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks - Tom Moffatt

I should actually take a moment to thank not just Colin but the several other people on this list who have replied to my query both on-list & privately. So thank you, all! My apologies for not acknowledging each e-mail as it was received, but it's been an unusually stressful time around here. Anyway, my original problem still remains unsolved, and that is to verify whether or not my Catherine Lund is in fact a descendant of Thomas Lund. I am awaiting receipt of records from Nashua which may help with documentation. Thanks again, David Berry
Hello Colin, Thanks for your reply to my query. I will note the date correction regarding Thomas Lund & make sure it's right if & when I ever get to add him to my family tree. Right now my task is to determine whether or not my gt gt grandmother Catherine Lund was actually a descendant of his. It looks likely, but without documentation it's just a good guess at this point. I've been to Genweb, Rootsweb, & just about everywhere else on the web, but to no avail. I have ordered copies of birth records from Nashua which may help clarify whenever they arrive. The Merrimack Historical Society would be very interested in sharing information with you. Steve
There are several Lund buried in the cemetery at Thornton's Ferry, NH. The earliest of these appears to be Lt. Charity Lund who died June 11, 1793 at age 62. The History of Merrimack NH lists a William son of Thomas b. Jan 25, 1686 Dunstable d. 1768 m. 1716 to Rachel Holden. William served as a selectman after the town of Merrimack was formed from old Dunstable. Charity was one of his son. A daughter Mary married James Underwood. If anyone is interested in more information on the Lund, Underwood or Holden families that lived in Merrimack please contact me directly. This is from another mail list I subscribe to... *** For anyone who hasn't heard, Ancestry.com, is working on putting online, a substitution of sorts of the 1890 census. Here is their definition of their site: "More than 20 million records have been identified for inclusion in the collection and additions will be made regularly as they become available for posting. It will include fragments of the original 1890 census that survived the fire, special veterans schedules, several Native American tribe censuses for years surrounding 1890, state censuses (1885 or 1895), city and county directories, alumni directories, and voter registration documents." Anyone interested in checking out this valuable site may find it at: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/1890sub/main.htm

Hi David: I really don't know a lot about the Lund's and Varnum's of Hillsborough County, but I do know that Lund's and Varnum's were also married into the Butler family of the Hillsborough area, and some of them were all involved in the Revolutionary War. Have you looked at the Varnum and Lund references in the DAR index? Perhaps that would give you some more clues. Regards, Dianne Butler Lucas
