    3. Hi everyone, First time posting to this list. My interest are the family of Abraham Holden. According to his Rev. War pension papers he was born July 10, 1762. This does coincide (but not proven) with the family of Thomas and Ruth (Baker) Holden from Worcester County, MA. In 1776 he enlisted (young lad of 14) as a fifer in the Rev. War in Haverhill, Grafton County,NH. In 1780/81 he listed his residence as Hancock, Hillsborough County, NH. He is listed in the 1790 (1 male 16 & up; 2 male 16 & under; 3 females), 1800 (1 male under 10; 1 male 16 & under 25; 1 male 26 & under 45; 4 females under 10; 3 females 10 & under 16; 1 female 26 & under 45), and 1810 (I don't have this one yet) census in Loudon, Merrimack County, NH. After living in Loudon, NH for 20/30 years he lived in Leicester, Addison County, Vermont (except for a short time in Ticonderago, Essex County, NH in 1840). He died February 12, 1845 in Leicester, VT. I have only been able to find one child for Abraham, that is Aaron b: abt. 1805 in New Hampshire. Loudon town clerk has no record for Aaron. Aaron also lived in Leceister, VT, where he married (1st) Nov. 11, 1826 - Orpha Whitmore; (2nd) abt. 1847 -Sarah Huntley. Of these unions there were born: Sallie Sofia Holden - abt. 1827 Nathan Austin Holden - abt. 1828 Josephus Nelson Holden - January 25, 1830 Earl Douglas Holden - abt. 1831 Charlotte Marie Holden - abt. 1834 Elbra Elizabeth Holden - October 02, 1835 Orpha Adeline Holden - May 30, 1841 Olive Julianna Holden - abt. 1842 Betsey J. Holden - abt. 1848 Abraham Austin Holden - January 20, 1851 Rose Matilda Holden - abt. 1852 Sarah Abbie Holden - July 16, 1856 Ida M. Holden - January 13, 1859 Jennie Holden - November 20, 1861 William A. Holden - abt. 1863 I'm posting this in the hopes someone has additional information on my Abraham. I need to find who he was living with in Haverhill, NH in 1776 and who he married and if possible who his children were. Thanks in advance and if you can't help me thanks for reading this. 3. Stewart and all, I know that when NH was being settled the towns hired a minister for the church that the majority of town residents went to. Here in Merrimack, as with most NH towns, it was the Congregational Church. I believe that in Bedford it was the Presbyterian Church. The ministers were paid with a separate tax on all residents. Many people didn't like the tax and refused to pay or protested against it. Around 1815 (I'd have to look up the exact date) NH passed the Toleration Act. This act banned direct payment to the minister. Support for upkeep of the church continued because most churches were also the "town hall" and all town meeting were held there. I'll look up some further information later today and post it. Steve McKay Merrimack Historical Society

    2. Hi...I am hoping that someone can help me with this question: I have an ancestor, a Willard B. STRAW, who was in the Concord, NH Penitentiary in July 1850. Would anyone know how to find more about him during his incarceration? He seems to have disappeared between July 1850 and 1854. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance for any help. Sue Reynolds

    3. Josiah was the first to move from Concord MA to New Ipswich. There were also four other Brown families in New Ipswich: descended from Abraham of Ipswich MA; John of Ipswich;Jonathan of Westminster MA; and Joshua of Coventry CT. I have a Hannah Eliza Brown b. Nov. 19, 1843, dau of Hermon (Aaron6, Josiah5 ...etc) and Sophronia, dau of Samuel Potter and Elizabeth (Brown) Prescott. There was also an Elizabeth b. 1776 to Ebenezer a desc. of Jphn Brown. No others in a quick skim of Chandler's History of New Ipswich. I remember a discussion of Browns in Francestown a few months ago on some board -- perhaps not this one. Most of these discussion groups, maillists etc have archives you could search for clues. Stewart Rowe HDenni5177@aol.com wrote: > > What towns in New Hampshire did your ancestor live in? 2. I too have found records of refusals to pay the minister's tax (in Hillsborough, Hillsborough Co., NH) with a number of my ancestors who signed the petitions in the town of Hillsborough. I read these petitions in the town records. Soon thereafter, some of my family left the town after generations of (McNeil's) being there, migrating eventually to New York and then on west. I have long been curious if this was the reason they left. So, I'll look forward to hearing of any books or accounts about this too. Regards, Dianne Butler Lucas

    3. In an 1885 letter to my grandfather, a cousin, Rev. John S. Brown, wrote: "Your grandfather Abner Brown would not pay a tax for the support of the Congregational minister and was carried to jail because he refused to pay it. He paid generously for the support of his own [Baptist] minister, Elder John Parkhurst, and he thought it unjust to be compelled to pay for the support of a minister whose church he did not attend. By suffering himself to be imprisoned rather than to pay an unjust tax, he attracted the notice of fellow citizens to the great injustice of being compelled to support a denomination with which he had little sympathy. I think this determination to go to jail and to prison rather than pay an unjust tax had a large influence in getting the laws of New Hamoshire changed so that there should be no compulsion in paying a minister tax but that the support of preaching should be made a voluntary matter...." This Abner Brown (Josiah5, John4, Thomas3, Boaz2, Thomas1) was born in New Ipswich in 1776 and died there in 1824, so the event mentioned probably happened in the period 1800-1824. I'm aware that Massachusetts had this sort of "established religion" from very early on, and its diaspora carried it to other states. For general background on the ending of this practice, particularly with regard to Mas. and N.H., can any readers suggest books or other sources for me to read? Stewart Rowe

    2. Looking for the family of Susannah Morrison, born 1731 in Dover, Strafford County, who married Matthew McDuffee of the Londonderry, Rockingham County McDuffee family. They moved around the 1750's to Bedford, Hillsborough County, NH. Both Matthew (1799) and Susannah (9, 1799) died in Bedford, NH. Anyone with info on Susannah's family please contact me. We already have a Morrison marrying into the McDuffee's later down the line, but I think she is from the same emigrant family (ie. John Morrison of Londonderry, NH). Thanks, Colin

    3. Colin et al, Here is an interesting story of William Lund and Rachel Holden. From the History of Merrimack NH Vol. 1 During the year 1724, William Lund was captured by the Indians and taken to Canada. His wife paid the ransom and was known to say, "He is mine for I have bought him." Boston, January 16th 1724-25 Received of Mrs Rachell Lund, of Dunstable, Sixty Pound Credditt; which she leaves with me, in consideration of my giving my Letter of Credit to Lieut. Joseph Blanchard, on Col. John Schuyler, att Albany. Said Blanchard being bound to Canada, for to get Mrs. Lund's husband redeemed from the indians. And if he do not make use of my Credditt above, to the value of the sum she leaves with me, I promise to repay her the same.
