I would be very interested to know where to obtain a copy of the Caladonian published book of The Clan McNeil. I am a direct descendant of John & Christian McNeil of Ireland and Londonderry, NH. Dianne Butler Lucas
My name is Karen Hennigan and I have been researching my Hennigan line for quite sometime now. Infact, tthree years ago I traveled back to Milford, NH to continue my search. It was a wonderful experience. I am still looking for information on PATRICK HENNIGAN who married JOHANNA BUCKLEY about 1820 in Ireland and one of their sons was DAVID HENNIGAN born in Cork Co 1822. He married ELIZABETH BROSNEHAN around 1860. They came to USA around 1860 and settled in Boston, eventually moving to New Hampshire. David lived in Lyndeboro, NH before moving to Milford, New Hampshire in 1874. I've searched Lyndeboro census up in Salt Lake, but copy was not readable. Would like to know if HENNIGAN was in Lyndeboro 1860. I also located a Johanna Buckley glass window at St. Patrick's Church in Milford, but I don't believe this to be the same person. I did find maps of the property that David Hennigan lived on. Other names in Milford are PHILBRICK and FRANCES M. COLE. Both are buried there and I visited the gravesites. Would also be interested in knowing what kind of work the HENNIGAN's might have done back in Milford. Also, what sort of job do you suppose David had when he lived in Lyndeboro? Many thanks.
Dear Listers, Just thought I'd tell you a little bit about my New Hampshire connections. My ggggg-grandfather first arrived in Boston about 1749. His name was Nathaniel GORDON and he came from Tyrone, Ireland with his wife, Sarah MARTIN, and four children: John, James, Samuel and Hannah. They had planned to go to Virginia where a (unknown) brother was already living, but their ship was forced to dock in Boston instead. Samuel GORDON married Eleanor MITCHELL and moved to Bedford, NH. He stayed in Bedford a short time, then sold his property to his brother John GORDON. John lived in Bedford all his life and raised a large family. My gggg-grandfather Samuel GORDON and his wife Eleanor moved to Peterborough, NH and raised a large family. Samuel lived and died in Peterborough as did Eleanor. His second son Nathaniel GORDON b. about 1774 was my ggg-grandfather. I have been unable to find a birth record or marriage record for Nathaniel. Apparently there was a Presbyterian church fire which destroyed all the vital records prior to 1791. Nathaniel GORDON married a woman named Sophia (b.1790, maiden name unk) who was born in Conn. and they moved to Madison County, New York. Nathaniel froze to death in New York some time in 1827, leaving 36 year old Sophia with at least 7 children to raise. My brick wall is Sophia. I have been searching for her maiden name for many years with no success. I found her tombstone in New York but no maiden name was given. I have researched a number of other families in the Hillsborough, NH and Madison, NY areas hoping to find a connection for Sophia but have never been able to piece together the puzzle. Actually I have other brick walls, too...such as who were the Scotch-Irish relatives in Tyrone, Ireland? Also I've never been able to find out who that brother was in Virginia. If anyone out there in cyber-space has any suggestions, advice, answers, or comments I'd love to hear from you. Thanks, Ruth in Missouri
In 1807 Levi Blanchard m. Hannah Nichols, dau. of Kendall Nichols and Hannah Symonds. I have only two unlikely birth dates for Hannah, 1767 (she would have been 68 when her last child was born!) and 1791! Hannah Symonds was said by Chandler (History of New Ipswich) to be the daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Damon) Symonds. If anyone can provide a lead to the ancestry of either Thomas Symonds or Hannah Damon, and a reasonable birthdate for their daughter Hannah, it would be much appreciated. Stewart Rowe
Hi Sandy, Maybe a clue here. Hope this helps. REF: The Clan MacNeil...pub.1923...by The Caledonian Pub. Co. Page 141 While the great majority of the Clansmen emigrating to America went direct to the northern or southern settlements, there were, of course, many whose families had first gone from Scotland to Ireland and then on to the Colonies. Of these was the family of Hermon Atkins MacNeil, whose ancestors, Abraham and Jane MacNeil, left Argyllshire and settled for a short time in Bellemooney, County Antrim, leaving for Derryfield, now Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1750, accompanied by their four year old son, William. In 1765, William, and his mother and two sisters, removed to New Boston, New Hampshire, where he married Rachael, daughter of Peter Patterson of Lon- donderry, with issue: James, Jane, Grissel, Abraham, Rachael, Peter, John, Betsey, Sally, and Janette. Peter married Mary Stiles, of Amherst, and had eleven children: Mary Jane, H. Elizabeth, William, C. Granville, John Clinton, Rachael Patterson, Abby Stiles, Peter Patterson, Hariet, Newell, and Lydia Shaw. Hi Gordon- I can't help you specifically on Sarah, but I have first cousins that married each other around that same time - also in Hillsborough county! Small towns, few options? <LOL> Karen
Trying to place my ancestor Grandmother, Mary F. McNeil into the right family. Born in New Boston, 1787 and believed to be a grandchild of William the school teacher. Anyone know where she belongs? Sandy
I'm looking for help in identifying the family of Sarah Stevens. The following is what I think I know: * Sarah was born about 1750 in Derryfield. * Sarah married John Harvey on a date unknown. * Sarah and John were the parents of Susanna, b. 1779 in Derryfield. * Sarah's death is recorded as occuring in 1844 in Derryfield/Manchester. * The marriage of Sarah and John is reported in the DAR Index. * John Harvey was born in 1752 to John and Susanna (Perham) Harvey, and the birth is recorded in the Derryfield Town History. I can only find one Sarah Srevens in the Derryfield area who was born at about the right time. This Sarah was the daughter of Ebenezer and Esther Stevens. The problem is that Susanna Harvey married Ephraim Stevens who would have been her first cousin. This may heve been possible, but it seems unlikely. I know there are other Stevens families in near-by communities, and its possible that the record showing her birthplace as Derryfield could be wrong. Does anyone have a spare Sarah Stevens who might have been born about 1750-55 in the greater Derryfield area? Gordon
I don't have much on Benjamin as I followed three of his brothers. All I have is the following: Benjamin d. 7 Feb 1852 in Hillsboro age 58 [Child's PutneyGen:5 HennHisSoc]. He m. 24 Sep 1805 in Hillsboro Anna AIKEN who was b. May 1786 in Deering and d. 24 Aug 1867 in Nashua [Child's PutneyGen:5,6 HennHisSoc]. They resided in Hillsboro where they had Eliza J. PUTNEY who m. Perkins ANDREWS and d. 29 Mar 1868 [HistHills2:27] and probably others. The references are the Putney family history compiled by Francis Childs that is housed in the Henniker, NH Historical Society and the History of Hillsboro, NH vol 2 pg. 27. I have more on the parents of Benjamin if you are interested. What is the source of the names of the other children? Do you have their dates and places of birth? I am compiling the early families of Bradford and will get to the library to do census work sometime in the next year. When I do I will be happy to send along that information. ----- Original Message ----- From: ~Heather~ <amber403@webtv.net> To: <NHHILLSB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 03, 2000 1:35 PM Subject: [NHHILLSB] PUTNEY? > Hi Everyone > I'm new to the list, and thought id post my interest. I have a strong Goffstown connection. My family is MC DOUGALL. The first one I find in Goffstown is William born in 1792. I don't know where he was born, but his children were all born there. My uncle still lives in Goffstown. I checked with your surnames and have found: Clarence EASTMAN married to Helen MC DOUGALL(died 1910) I also have a Miriam RICHARDSON but she was from Pelham, NH - married (1836) a HILL in Methuen, MA. I was hoping for some more connections but I guess it sometimes only takes one! Hi Everyone I'm new to the list, and thought id post my interest. I'm searching for information on the PUTNEY family of Hillsboro, in particular Benjamin Putney's family. He married Anna AIKEN in 1805, and children were David Wilson, Irene, Eliza, Mary, Joseph, Sylvester, Mahala, Angeline, Julia, Kesiah, Giles, and Albert. Im most interested in information on the children, especially Julia born about 1822. I'm curious if anyone knows who she married and where they lived. Benjamin is listed on the Hillsboro census 1830 page 436, 1840 page 226, and 1850 page 28. Does anyone have access to these? Can anyone offer any help on this? :) Thanks! Any help greatly appreciated! Heather
I'm looking for info on my gggrandparents, William C. Ford and Sarah Ann Orne. They were married July 01, 1840 in Washington, Sullivan Co., NH. Their son, George Albert Ford was b April 30, 1845 in Hillsboro, NH. A daughter Emma was b abt 1849. By the age of 5, George & Emma were supposedly orphans and being raised by his paternal grandmother who we thought might have been named Mugford. By the time George was 7, he had no parents or grandparents. A family with no children "adopted" him and his sister, Emma, and later adopted another boy and girl. Supposedly the family was named Chapman. However, in 1850 census, the only George Ford, age 5 that I found, born in NH, in Hillsborough Co. was living with a Thomas J. Jones family. Emma was not there. I'm not sure if this is the right George Ford or not, but couldn't find either of his parents as head of household in Hillsborough Co. Couldn't find Mugfords or Muckfords. In the Thomas J. Jones (age 46) family was also Nancy A. (41), Charles C. (14), Nancy J. (11), Lura A. (2), and David P. (18). All those were with surname of Jones. There was also a Lucretia Averill (61). When Goerge Ford enlisted in the army at age 16, he listed his county of residence as Hillsborough Co., NH. I can trace George after that and have ample info on descendants, etc., but can't track him between birthdate and age 16. I have been unable to look at a 1860 census yet. Only thing I know about Emma is that she died Emma Barrett Jan 25, 1921, in NH State Hosp, Concord, Merrimack Co., NH. Thanks in advance for your help on any of these names. Diane
Frank, I've had August Linden on the list for some time and no luck so far. Do you know if there is a marriage and/or death index on line for Hillsborough and/or New Hampshire, and if so, do you know the website addresses? Thank you. My maternal grandmother was born in Fayette county Pa and my paternal grandmother was born in Manchester. The Fayette county list gets over 400 messages a week and I'd guess 20 messages is a big week for Hillsborough county. The Hillsborough list had nothing to compare with "where elopers got married in the thirties" "can cemetery lists be copyrighted" and "where Monica should go when she came to Fayette county from Kansas". A smaller list ain't necessarily bad. I've had message on query board for quite some time. Great grandparents were all in Manchester in 1900. Last names are McGrath, Reynolds, Dunn and Sweeney. I'll gladly share information. Frank McGrath
I think Wells understands now that we are a small list and everyone on this list is more that willing to share everything they have. Wells, sorry I haven't answer before but just got back from a rough 4 days moving my son from Bellview Fl back here to Pennsauken, NJ. I'm proud to say that if someone on this list has information your looking for, you will probably be over come by it. ;-) We have a great group of folks on this list. You also might want to check out the USGenWeb Hillsborough NH page and post a query on our query page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nhhillsb/index.htm You can also feel free to eMail me, if you have any questions. Wells, Not ignored, do you really want dozens of e-mail messages saying "sorry, I can't help you"? I am a newcomer to this list, but have been on several others for some time. Mostly, you will get responses from folks who can help you or those who need help on the same surname. Since I am a "newbie" to this list, I have no idea what surnames you are searching or where in the co. Hi all- Maybe I can get some discussion going. I'd love to hear from anyone connected to these groups: EATON- David Eaton & Betsy (Hadley), lived in Goffstown, Eatons came from Haverhill MA. Related lines: Emerson, Kimball, Morrill, HADLEY- Ebenezer Hadley and Hannah (Eastman), also lived in Goffstown. Related lines: Gile, Harriman . These lines also go back to Haverhill, MA. RICHARDSON - David Eaton Richardson & Abbie Rogers (Morse), Paige Richardson and Betsey Eaton, Matthew Richardson and Abigail Eaton, all of Goffstown. The Richardson line goes back to Woburn MA, the Eaton group is the same as above - first cousins married. I have lots to share with cybercousins out there! Karen Kimball
Hello Wells and NHHILLSB list, Yes, we get your messages. One thing to consider: Hillsborough Co. NH is a small county with a small comparative population (compared to say MA) . Your messages are read, but as Julie says, our list is small, but we are mighty! I host the Mason, NH website and when I read messages like yours, I think to myself, would this person's query have any references to my little town? I do read the query, I do think about it, and if I have any info to share, I do just that! I just wish others researching in Hillsborough Co., NH would put up websites for "their little towns." If you think you might have ancestors in Mason, NH visit my website. I always love adding more info that others share with me to my site as well. Rhett R. Hey, don't feel bad--mine don't get answered, either. I don't think it's a matter of being ignored--more like a case of not very many list members. And the very few of us, there are, just don't happen to have the tidbits of info the others seek. Sounds plausible to me. This just doesn't seem to be a very active list, compared to some of the others to which I'm subscribed. Julie, endlessly sorting out dead relatives.....
