    3. Having been born and raised in Hillsboro I can tell you that the official name has not been changed, however the name used is Hillsboro, NH. I attended Hillsboro-Deering Schools and all mail is addressed to Hillsboro, NH 03244. The paper is the Hillsboro Messenger. Perhaps the reason the community shortened the spelling was to differentiate it from the county. I know this is a source of great confusion in the genealogy community, as requests for information from the entire county of Hillsborough is frequently directed to volunteers who have information on the town of Hillsboro. As a native and a genealogist I can tell you life is much easier if you can differentiate it that way. The population of the town I think has topped 5,000 now, where the county contains the largest cities of the state. ----- Original Message ----- From: Julie C Hesson <ww6916@dragonbbs.com> To: <NHHILLSB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 18, 2000 8:08 PM Subject: Re: [NHHILLSB] Hillsborough Co. 2. Susan Jones
    3. Hi List, First, let me apologize to everyone who receives this e-mail more than once. I have decided to send this to all the lists I am on to help the most people. As you know, there are times when searching for films, you need the soundex number for the surname you are researching in order to rent the proper film. I have found a great website that all you have to do is type in the surname and it will give you the soundex code for that name. Hope this is of help to a lot of people. http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/soundex/soundex.html Sue in Florida macduff@infi.net

    3. Listmembers: The following probably goes without saying, but I think it's worth reiterating, for the trusting and unwary among us. We want to share our GedComs with our fellow listmembers, and we want the information to be as complete as possible--blank spaces are anathema to us genealogists. A word of caution: Please--do not place specific details of living persons, whether yourself, or family members, on the web. Identity theft is becoming big business, and the computer makes it increasingly possible, even probable that you, or someone you know, will become a victim. The FBI considers identity theft a huge--and growing--crime problem. By giving your complete name, date and place of birth, and your parents' names, you have just given any unscupulous person all the data they need, to steal your identity, and ruin your life. With the above information, they can write for a copy of your birth certificate, acquire a new copy of your Social Security number, get a replacement driver's license in your name, and acquire credit cards with which to charge $1,000's of dollars of stuff in your name. Once they have done this, your credit is in a mess, and they can just move on, to the next unsuspecting innocent person. If you send your family's history to a non-web group, such as a county genealogical group, for inclusion in a future publication, just be prudent, and leave out the specific birth and marriage data on living persons. Don't volunteer to become a victim--put no data of a personal nature on the web--don't email it through a listserver, which hosts surname boards, because it then is archived, and any unscrupulous archive-surfer has access to it. Don't make it easy for someone to steal your identity! Julie, who had a close call with identity theft....

    3. Dear Mimi, Yes there is a History of New Ipswich 1735 - 1914 by Charles Henry Chandler published in 1914. I believe that in order for a family to be mentioned, they I have lived in New Ipswich for 2 generations. I do have a copy of this book and in it there is one Joseph Stevens listed, parents are not mentioned but he married Abigail Knowlton, daughter of Benjamin Knowlton and Abigail Wright, she was born 25 June 1777 and died 19 Dec 1864, married Joseph 10 Feb 1795, he died 1 Dec 1846 and it states they had 13 children but there is no mention of any names. I don't know if any of this information is helpful to you or not but it is about all there is in this book.
