The Daily News March 1, 1962 Page: 14 Spaniard's Bay - Elizabeth Gosse - One of Tilton's oldest and most respected residents, Mrs. Elizabeth Gosse, entered into rest on the evening of Thursday, February 22nd. She was 84. Known to the community as "Aunt Sis", she was loved and respected by all, and for a very good reason, for she was the type of person who was the salt of the earth. For many years in her practice of midwifery she was a tower of strength to those to whom she ministered, and her pleasant personality enhanced by a lovely smile endeared her to all. She was a neighbour whose kindnesses knew no bounds. She was a devout Anglican and as such she was a regular communicant. She was a faithful member of the CEWA and an untiring church worker in All Saints Branch for well over fifty years. Her funeral was held on Saturday afternoon when the burial service was conducted by the Rev. E. Willis, and her remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband who predeceased her many years ago. Mourning the loss of a loving mother are two sons, Richard and Peter at Tilton; five daughters, Mrs. Emily Sheppard at Tilton, Mrs. Rose Gosse at Hartford, Conn., Mrs. Violet Crane at Tilton, Mrs. Isabelle Murrin at Spaniard's Bay, and Mrs. Bertha Smith at Tilton, as well as 39 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren, and one brother, William Gosse, of Spaniard's Bay. To those who mourn we offer sincere sympathy. The Daily News May 5, 1962 Page: 5 Spaniard's Bay - Gosse Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gosse will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, May 13, having been married at St. Luke's Church, Shearstown, by the Reverend H. V. Whitehouse on Mary 13, 1912. Mrs. Gosse is the former Miss Bertha Dorey of Exploits. They have two sons, John at Gander, Josiah at Toronto, and two daughters, Julia (Mrs. Haig Collins) and Nina (Mrs. John Bath) also living at Toronto and eleven grandchildren. Mr. Gosse, a master carpenter and builder, is well known as a builder of schools in various places in the Island. We join with their family, friends and well-wishers in extending warmest congratulations to this grand couple. The Daily News October 12, 1962 Page: 6 Spaniard's Bay - Newhook - Gosse Wedding The marriage of Linda Clare, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick James Newhook, St. John's, to Mr. Robert Martin Gosse, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric M. Gosse, St. John's, took place on September fifth at St. Thomas' Church, Rev. S. J. Davies officiating at the double ring ceremony. Mrs. Peter Dawson played the wedding music and accompanied Mrs. Fred Pittman who sang "The Lord's Prayer" during the signing of the register. The bride who was given away by her father was in a classically simple sheath gown of white peau de soie, fashioned with a fitted bodice, long sleeves, and having a bell shaped overskirt falling into a chapel train. Her shoulder length veil was held by a coronet of crystal and pearls, and she carried a semi-cascade bouquet of yellow roses, white-feathered carnations and white snapdragons. She wore a strand of cultured pearls, the gift of the groom. Miss Helen Bishop was maid of honor, in a bronze shade, and Miss Barbara Gosse, sister of the groom and Miss Evelyn Atkins, as attendants, in apple green, wore gowns of peau de soie, having short sleeves and bell shaped skirts. Their shoes were of the same shade as their gowns and they carried bouquets and wore coronets in blending shades of golden bronze, yellow and white daisy mums. Miss Debra Cummings, as flower girl for her cousin, wore a white frock of peau de soie with short sleeves and a very full skirt. She wore a tiny veil and carried a basket of flowers in shades of bronze and yellow. Mr. Heber Bowering acted as best man for Mr. Gosse and the ushers were Mr. George Gosse and Mr. Claude Sheppard Jr., cousins of the groom. Mrs. Newhook wore a sheath gown of taupe cut velvet embossed with white matching hat of draped ribbon and a corsage of orange delight roses. Mrs. Gosse was in a gown of dark brown chiffon, having a draped bodice, and she wore a beige straw cocktail hat and corsage of pale yellow carnations. Mrs. Beatrice Cummings, grandmother of the bride, wore a sheath gown of beige and brown lace fashioned with a jacket. She wore a matching hat and a corsage of yellow roses. The reception was held at the Old colony Club which was beautifully decorated with autumn flowers. The parents of the bride and groom received with the bridal party. Rev. S. J. Davies acted as toastmaster and Archdeacon W. G. Legge proposed the toast to the bride and groom. Later the happy couple left for Nova Scotia, the bride traveling in a three piece knitted suit of raspberry red trimmed with white, white hat and gloves and black patent accessories. The Daily News March 12, 1962 Page: 3 Spaniard's Bay - Freddie Hutchings - Four-year-old Freddie Hutchings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hutchings of Tilton, drowned in a pond there on Sunday just before noon. The little lad, in company with another four-year-old boy named Young, was playing unnoticed behind his father's garage and not 50 feet from his home when the accident occurred. Freddie's playmate, unable to help his companion, ran to fetch his grandmother, Mrs. Crane, who summoned help. The child's father took the lad from the water and had him driven to Bay Roberts where Doctors Drover and Avery applied artificial respiration without success. This was the third fatal accident in Tilton within three weeks.
