The Daily News February 14, 1962 Page: 8 Spaniard's Bay Ann Nora Sheppard - One of the oldest and respected citizens of Spaniard's Bay entered into eternal rest on Sunday night, February 4, at the age of eighty-six. She was Ann Nora Sheppard, the widow of Abraham Sheppard, boat builder and planter, who predeceased her by eight years. For the last three or four years Mrs. Sheppard's health had been failing, but she was fairly active before that and it was a pleasure to visit and to hear her talk of the days that used to be. She was indeed a good mother, a devoted wife and a neighbour of the finest sort. Her funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon and following the office for the burial of the dead at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, read by the rector, the Rev. E. Willis, her remains were laid to rest in the family plot. She leaves to mourn two sons, Stanley Sheppard at Halifax, N.S., John F. Sheppard, with whom she resided, and one daughter, Mary (Mrs. Edward Neil) at Spaniard's Bay, twelve grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. In expressing sympathy to the bereaved we share the hope that her soul, through the mercy of God, will rest in peace. The Daily News August 29, 1962 Page: 16 Spaniard's Bay - Mrs. Elizabeth Sheppard passed peacefully away at her home here on Tuesday, August 21, following an illness of several months. She was eighty-three years old. Older people will remember her as being a quiet an unassuming person, a good friend and a kind neighbour. Her family mourns the loss of a hardworking, loyal and loving mother. Her remains were laid to rest on Thursday afternoon in the Anglican Cemetery following the Office for the Burial of the Dead in the Church of the Holy Redeemer and conducted by the Rev. E. Willis. Surviving here are three sons, Frank Esau and Richard, and two daughters, Myrtle (Mrs. Levi Sheppard) and Carrie (Mrs. John Sheppard), one brother, William Sheppard, seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. "Rest eternal grant to her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her." The Daily News March 10, 1962 Page: 3 Gordon Sheppard - Four-year-old Gordon Sheppard, Jr. of Lark Harbor, died after he was pulled from the waters of Outer Bay of Islands, near his home Thursday. More than two hours of artificial respiration failed to revive the lad. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Sheppard. The boy's death brings the province's total thus far in 1962 to 26. The Daily News July 5, 1962 Page: 11 Spaniard's Bay - Strickland - Moore Wedding The marriage of Jessie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Moore of Carbonear, to David, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ebenezer Strickland of Spaniard's Bay, was solemnized in the United Church, Carbonear, on Saturday, June 30, at 5 p.m., with the Rev. W. F. Bradbury. Miss Helena Dean was the organist. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of white nylon over satin, a shoulder length veil held in place by a tiara of pearls, and she carried a bouquet of white mums. Her maid of honour was her sister Jean Moore, and bridesmaids were Frances Strickland and Rose Taylor. All three wore identical gowns of lemon with white accessories, with bouquets of mums. Flower girls Lynn Yetman and Yvonne Seymour were similarly dressed in pale blue nylon with white accessories and carried pretty baskets of mixed seasonal flowers. Attending the groom were Gordon Young, John Strickland and William Strickland. Ushers were Joe Thoms and William Strickland, Sr. The reception was held at St. Matthew's Hall, Bay Roberts. The bride's mother wore a dress of royal blue over lace, while the groom's mother wore a dress of navy blue over lace, their corsages consisting of red and white carnations. Nearly two hundred guests sat down to an excellent wedding supper prepared by and served by St. Matthew's branch of the CEWA under the capable direction of Mrs. L. Butler, after which the usual toasts were honoured with Mr. Haig Young as the inimitable toastmaster. The Rev. W. T. Bradbury proposed the toast to the bride; the groom did the honours to the bridesmaids while the toast to the parents was given by E. H. Vokey. All were responded appropriately by the groom, the best man, and by the Rev. E. Willis who spoke on behalf of the parents. The balance of the evening was spent in dancing. When they return from their honeymoon Mr. and Mrs. Strickland will take up residence at Spaniard's Bay. May their lives together be long, successful, and filled with every happiness.
