The Daily News March 20, 1963 Page: 9 Spaniard's Bay Mrs. Mary Jane Gosse, one of the oldest residents of Spaniard's Bay, passed away March 9, at the Carbonear Hospital. Up until quite recently, Mrs. Gosse had been blessed with good health and kept fairly busy visiting with her sons and daughters on occasion. In her more active days she was a faithful church worker and a regular worshiper; her last attendance at service was less than two years ago. Possessing a pleasing personality and quiet charm, she was a welcome guest among old and young; the affection which was showered upon her by those who knew her was well deserved, for from her heart came love, kindness, sympathy and understanding. She was the mother of a large family and her life was mainly devoted to being the good mother that she was, sharing in her children's joys and sorrows, helping and advising, working and praying, and showing them by example the pattern of a life well lived. Her memory will be precious to her three sons, Bertram (with whom she resided), James and Thomas, and by her five daughters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Robert Seymour), Florence (Mrs. Albert Smith), Rita (Mrs. Robert Neil), all residing at Spaniard's Bay, Susie (Mrs. William Yetman, Gander) and Julia (Mrs. Ambrose Parsons, Harbour Grace); 35 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. A brother James Mercer (St. John's), and two sisters, Julia (Mrs. William Barrett, Glace Bay, N.S.) and Millie (Mrs. Nath Barrett, Spaniard's Bay), survive her. She was laid to rest in the family plot March 11 following the service at Holy Redeemer Church, conducted by the Rev. E. Willis. "On that Happy Easter Morning, All the graves their dead restore; Father, sister, child and mother Meet once more." He and his wife had been visiting relatives at Mount Pearl on Saturday night. Early on Sunday morning he suffered a severe heart attack and the end came before the ambulance carrying him reached the hospital. Burial will be at Spaniard's Bay.
