The Daily News July 18, 1963 Page: 2 Spaniard's Bay - William Mercer - We extend sincere sympathy to Mrs. Violet Mercer and family of Shearstown on the tragic death of her son William at Toronto on Tuesday, July 9, as a result of an accident sustained on a construction project on Friday before. Although Bill was only 21 years of age and had gone to Toronto only about a year ago, he was well known and well liked in Spaniard's Bay especially among the younger folks, many of whom mourn his untimely passing. May his soul through the mercy of God rest in peace. The Daily News July 25, 1963 Page: 2 Spaniard's Bay - William Mercer - The community of Shearstown and the surrounding area was shocked last week when the news was received here from Toronto that William Mercer of this community had died from multiple injuries which he received a few days earlier while working on a construction job in Toronto. A couple of days after the accident hopes were high when we heard that William was responding well to doctors' treatment, but the sad news of his passing was received on Wednesday morning. Bill, as his friends called him, was born at Shearstown 21 years ago and spent most of his short lifetime there. However, like all young men looking for advancement and a chance to a better lot in life, Bill left last summer for Toronto and been employed there until his unfortunate accident. Bill Mercer was well liked by all who knew him. He had a pleasing personality and soon won the respect of those with whom he came in contact. We shall remember him as a smart young man, well-mannered with never too much to say, and his smile was infectious; yet his understanding seemed well beyond his years. He was a devoted son and a loving brother and he will be sorely missed in the family circle. He leaves to mourn his mother, Mrs. Violet Mercer, two older brothers, Allan and Heber; a sister, Mildred (Mrs. Vic Mercer), and other small sisters all residing at Shearstown. Burial took place in the family plot following the service at St. Mark's Church, Shearstown, on Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Isaac Butler, rector, assisted by the Rev. Bradbury who is here from the U.S.A. on vacation. The church was filled with people who came to pay their last respects to a very fine young man. To those who mourn his passing we offer heartfelt sympathy. "Sometimes it's hard to understand Why these thing have to be, But in His wisdom God has planned Beyond our power to see."
