Selected obituaries/marriages, etc. transcribed from the 1963 editions of The Daily News, published at St. John's, NL The Daily News February 20, 1963 Page: 5 Spaniard's Bay - Neal - Tipple Wedding The marriage of Alma, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Neal of Port au Port, to Clayton Samuel, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Tipple of Bay Roberts, was solemnized in St. Matthew's Church, Bay Roberts, on Thursday, February 14, at 7 p.m. The Rev. I. Butler, rector of the parish, performed the double-ring ceremony, while Mrs. Butler was the organist. Given in marriage by her father, the bride looked radiant in a floor-length gown of traditional white; her shoulder-length veil was held in place by a shimmering coronet. Attending her as maid of honour was here cousin, Miss Lena Brown, who wore a gown of pink chiffon over satin; bridesmaids were Miss Marguerite Mercer and Miss Thelma Hodder, who wore gowns similar to the maid of honour, except that they were aqua in colour. Attending the groom were Mr. Ed Barrett, his brother-in-law, as best man. Mr. Nick Powell and Mr. Gerald Mercer as bridesboys. Ushers were Mr. Gerald Mercer and Mr. Douglas Mercer. The reception was held at the spacious dining-hall of Dawe's Restaurant where the wedding supper was served to nearly one hundred guests. Mr. Robert Pepper was the master of ceremonies. The toast to the bride was proposed by the Rev. I. Butler and was responded to by the groom: other toasts were duly honoured. The balance of the evening was spent in dancing. After the honeymoon, which is being spent on the Avalon, the groom will return to his work with the CNR and the bride plans to resume her duties as chief of personnel at Dawe's Restaurant where she has been employed. They will reside at Bay Roberts. We wish them every happiness. (Photo by E. H. Bartholomew, familiarly known as Bart Neil, was seventy-one, and until he was stricken with illness about three or four years ago, his days were anything but idle. In his earlier years he prosecuted the Labrador fishery, but later carried on the carpentry trade and worked on many construction projects. We knew him as an amiable man, but those who lived closer to him knew him also as a good neighbour and a man of more deeds than words. He was the type of man that any small community can ill-afford to lose. To his sorrowing widow (the former Jessie M. Hutchings), to his sons, Warren at Spaniard's Bay, Horace at St. John's, Reginald (teacher) at Corner Brook, to his daughter Beulah (Mrs. George Dawe) at Port de Grave and to his nine grandchildren, we offer sincere sympathy. May his soul through the mercy of God rest in peace. The Daily News April 18, 1963 Page: 14 Spaniard's Bay - Sarah Noseworthy - Her family and friends were deeply shocked on Tuesday, April 9, when death came almost suddenly to Mrs. Sarah Noseworthy, 69, at the residence of her son here. On Sunday she spent the afternoon with her daughter at Harbour Grace and she spent part of the evening with another daughter, Effie. It was not until after she retired for the night that she took ill and suffered a severe paralytic stroke, she passed away on the following day. Left a widow thirty-three years ago, she raised up her six children as only a devoted mother can. Her task was not an easy one, but her diligence coupled with a strong faith in God saw her through many anxious days. Ever a devout member of the Anglican Church, she was a constant worshipper in the parish church. She was a member of the C.E.W.A. for almost fifty years. As a neighbour she was always a tower of strength to those in sickness and bereavement, and her gentle and reassuring smile brought comfort to many. To her children she was a guiding light and her memory will be always green to them. Her funeral was held on Thursday afternoon the Church of the Holy Redeemer where the Rev. E. Willis conducted the burial service. Interment was in the family plot. Mourning their sad loss are two sons, George, with whom she resided, and Ernest in Shearstown; three daughters, Effie (Mrs. Richard G. Noseworthy), Livie (Mrs. William Barrett) in Spaniard's Bay, and Winnie (Mrs. Thomas Pike) in Harbour Grace, and twenty grandchildren. Another son, James, predeceased her by eleven months. May her soul, through the mercy of God rest in peace.
