Alton was born in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland on September 30, 1965. He was one of six children of James Alton Conrad Payne (d. 1986) and Pauline Blanche Payne (Shears) of Rocky Harbour. He graduated from Holy Cross High School in Daniel's Harbour, Newfoundland and earned a Bachelor of Science with honors in Geology from Memorial University. In addition to his mother and widow, he is survived by his daughter, Hannah Gabrielle Payne; step-daughter, Paige Ryelin Kanasevich; sisters Louise (Harvey) Mouland, Musgrave Harbour, NL, Blanche (Phonse) Tulk, Aspen Cove, NL and Holly Hicks, Conception Bay South, NL and brothers Boyd (Margaret), Rocky Harbour and Brett (Pansy), Lower Sackville, many nieces and nephews and his ex-wife and friend Martina Haas. Alton was a successful entrepreneur. He founded Encanex Enterprises Ltd. in 2005 after a rewarding career in various environmental enterprises. He will be remembered as a generous man; a committed family man, devoted husband and a loving father to Hannah and step-father to Paige. Among his favourite times were those he spent with Hannah even if it was just driving her to school or taking in a movie. He cherished time with his extended family in his adopted province and back "home" in Newfoundland. His friends were friends for life and will remember him as loyal and true. A musician and an active man, Alton loved motorcycles, snow mobiles, cars and guitars and collected a few of each over the years. He enjoyed a party and an occasional "Fresca". He loved to travel but was happiest at home, in Rocky Harbour or on his adopted farm in Hants County with family. He had a passion for business and loved to "close a deal". Alton will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by the many people whose lives he touched and enriched. Visitation in Nova Scotia will be held at J.A.
