The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 7, 2013 Gerard Purcell It is with sadness that the family of Gerard Jerome Purcell, 65, of Lunenburg announce his passing on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at home. Born in Harbour Grace, N.L., he was the son of the late Charles and Monica (Shugarue) Purcell. Gerard began scallop fishing at the young age of fourteen, serving aboard many vessels over the years. It was during the last few years of his time at sea that his role as ships cook was enjoyed by his crewmates, up until his health forced him to retire. Gerard was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who enjoyed playing his guitar, singing, and a good game of cards, especially poker. His cooking skills were appreciated by family and friends, especially his homemade breads and cakes. Gerard is survived by his wife Lucy, sons, Stephen; Lunenburg, Craig (Becky); Vogler’s Cove, sisters, Lorraine (Robert) Tanner; Lunenburg, Geraldine (Bryan) Meisner; Second Peninsula, brothers, Charlie and his companion Joan Crouse; Bridgewater. Gerard will also be missed by his grandchildren Jeffrey, Alexis and Brandon. Gerard is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three nieces. As Gerard wished there will be no funeral service with a private interment at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the V.O.N., The Lung Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
