The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, February 13, 2014 Richard Matthews(February 9, 1946 - February 10, 2014) MATTHEWS, Richard Hayward (Rob) Age 68, of Halifax, passed away suddenly at home on February 10, 2014. Born in St. John’s, NL, on February 9, 1946 to Janet Tulk and Hayward Matthews, Richard, affectionately called Rob by those close to him, spent many happy years involved in a variety of sports venues in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. With sisters, Lyn and Fay, and younger brother Garry, Rob enjoyed a childhood filled with sports, adventures and summers sailing on boats with his Grandfather in Carmanville, NL. He attended Acadia University in the early 1960s and then began his career in journalism at the Western Star in Corner Brook, and The Evening Telegram and The Daily News in St. John’s, NL. He came to Halifax in 1969 and began working with the Canadian Press. He then worked with the Mail Star / Chronicle Herald, where his favourite writing positions were Science and Technology Editor and philatelic columnist, until he retired in 2000. Rob had a passion for cooking and loved experimenting in the kitchen, creating very interesting dishes. He was often found frequenting a number of golf courses throughout Nova Scotia during the summers and for the past decade, Rob would take a week-long June golf vacation with his friends to PEI. Mary and Rob loved to travel to places near and far, especially to visit their grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 42 years, Mary (Dunn), daughter, Cecilia, and three grandchildren, Blake and twins, Seth and Brooklyn; as well as sisters, Lyn and Fay (Geoff), and brother, Garry (Sandra); sisters-in-law, Ann Kennedy and Cathy Kennedy, and brothers-in-law, Brian Dunn, Joe Dunn, Steve Kennedy and Terry Kennedy, along with many loved nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place on Friday, February 14, 2014 at Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayer’s Road, from 2-4 and 6-8. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church (St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish) in Timberlea at 11 am with internment in Newfoundland at a later date.
