The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, July 20, 2016 Phyllis Legge(October 12, 1928 - July 18, 2016) Phyllis Maude Legge, 87, of Dartmouth, died Monday, July 18 in Dartmouth General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Pushthrough , NL, she was the daughter of the late Hedley and Ivy Rowsell. She was a long- time school teacher who took great pride in her profession. She was a Girl Guides of Canada leader for many years, imparting lessons of confidence, courage and community service to generations of girls. These and other lessons she also shared with her four daughters and five grandchildren. A woman of deep faith and kindness, she lead by word and by example. Her kindness came in loaves of fresh baked bread and favourite partridge berry pies; in thoughtful gestures and caring deeds: a cold cloth and hot soup for an adult child with the flu or a home and 20 years of compassionate care for her elderly aunt, Jane Rowsell (“Auntie” to nieces). She was the first to celebrate others’ accomplishments and the first to extend a hand up in hard times. She was a regular churchgoer and volunteer until illness prevented her from attending. But her deep Christian faith remained steadfast throughout her life even in the late stages of Parkinson’s-related dementia. When her beloved husband of 58 years recently died she said “he went up.” She surely followed. She is survived by daughters, Lynn, Lois (Richard), Ruth (Mike) and Joanne; sister, Betty Spurrell; grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, Chelsea, Dylan and Michaela. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles; sisters Evelyn and Mary (John) Freake; brother-in-law, Jack Spurrell. Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Dartmouth. Reception to follow in church basement. Interment at a later date. Flowers are welcomed or donations may be made to St. Luke’s Anglican Church. Special thanks to her primary caregivers Joanne, Jordan and Justin for their unwavering devotion and extraordinary care at home during her long illness.
