The Cape Breton Post, June 27, 2018 Wednesday Slaney, Roger Passed Away: June 24, 2018 It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Roger Slaney on Sunday June 24, 2018 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Roger was born in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland to Herb and Therese Slaney on May 15, 1960. Roger was a man of various talents. He was an accomplished musician who shared his love of music by teaching others to play the guitar and played with many bands over the years. He was a talented soccer player and coach in his younger years. In his 30-year career with the Canadian Coast Guard; he was highly respected by his peers and was presented with immediate awards for his performance on the job. But most importantly, he was a loving man with a fantastic sense of humour and boundless compassion. People always felt that he "had their back" and he always made them feel like they had a special connection. He was a wonderful husband, son, father, brother, and friend. Roger was predeceased by his father, Herb Slaney, and is survived by his wife, Valerie; his sons, Ryan (Krista) and Tristan; his mother, Therese, as well as his siblings, Christina (Jacques) Perrot, Gary Slaney, Rudy (Karen) Slaney, Lisa (Jim) Loder, Sonia (Andy) Slaney, Rodney (Barb) Slaney and Claudia (Frank) Brockerville. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 2 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel to be followed by a reception at the Canadian Coast Guard College. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice will be appreciated. The Cape Breton Post, June 25, 2018 Monday Rees, Eric Anderson Passed Away: June 22, 2018 Eric Rees, 84 of Glace Bay, passed away June 22, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Bell Island, NL, he was the son of the late Alfred and Mildred Rees. Eric worked as a stationary engineer on the "ice breakers" and Acadia University. For the past 15 years Eric volunteered "down the shore". He loved doing his Sudoku puzzles and reading "Downhome". Eric is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis (Munden); son, Eric (Susan), Canmore, AB; daughters, Linda Smith (Danny), Chestermere, AB and Jean Morris (Debbie), Woodville, NS; brother, Charles; sisters, Joan and Evelyn, all of NL, and his grandchildren, Alex, Nick, Marcus, Kaylyn and Ayla. Eric was predeceased by his son, Charlie. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A celebration of life will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at St. Mary's Church, Marconi Street. Interment at a later date. Family flowers only. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, June 21, 2018 Lorne (Ralph) Neil(August 07, 1944 - June 18, 2018) Ralph Neil 73, of Port Hawkesbury passed away on June 18th at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. Ralph was born August 7th, 1944 in Bell Island, Newfoundland to the Late: Doug and Flora (Mercer) Neil. Ralph worked for the local pulp mill for 27 years. Upon his retirement he began his career in Real Estate and was a proud member of the N.S. Association of Realtors. Throughout his 50 years in Port Hawkesbury, Ralph served as a Town Councilor for 14 years, was active in the curling club for 15 years, volunteered with the Festival of the Strait and helped build the Strait Minor Soccer Association. Ralph is survived by his spouse Gwen Neil of Port Hawkesbury; His daughter Rhonda MacLean (Duncan) of Bedford and his son Scott Neil (Shelly) of Montreal; brothers Ted Neil (Joanne) of Baltimore, Maryland and Wall Neil (Hannah) of St. John’s, Newfoundland; his grandchildren Emily (Mark) and Ted of Bedford, Ben and Nathan of Montreal.
