Waterloo Region Record, 06 Sep 2018, pg A7 (with picture) Obituary of Dorothy Renwick The heavens received an angel in the early hours of September 3, 2018 as Dorothy passed away peacefully in the loving arms of family after a long battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis and declining health in her 89th year. Born on June 7, 1929 in Happy Adventure, Newfoundland, she moved to Ontario in the 1960’s. She is predeceased by her parents, Walter and Alfreda Coles, first husband Makenzie Hussey. second husband Lloyd, and son Maxwell Hussey. Left to cherish fond memories are her loving daughters; Linda (John) Landry, Betty (Rick) Miller, and Pamela Stanberry. She will be forever remembered by her grandchildren; Jennifer (Graham) Corrie, Yolanda (Mark) Rekzin and Kelly Miller. Dorothy had two cherished great-grandchildren; Samantha and Lucas. Her cat Caesar will feel her absence profoundly. A devoted life-long member of All Saints Anglican Church, Waterloo. She was truly a woman of great, unwavering faith. Mom retired from the University of Waterloo Arts Library and had previously been employed at Robinson’s Department Store and several hospitals in the Ottawa area in Administration. As a mother and wife, mom worked tirelessly to make her home an inviting place of comfort and friendship. She made room at her table and in her home for anyone, human or animal, that needed shelter, a meal, a smile or laugh. She was happiest when she had a houseful of family and friends and serving her wonderful meals. An avid reader and lifelong learner, mom loved to travel, taking many cruises and holidays to exotic destinations. She was a Master of fine-detailed knitting, especially sweaters that were worn and treasured by many. Mom was a woman of the earth, and never more content than when she was in her garden planting flowers, fruits and vegetables. The birds, squirrels and stray cats will greatly miss her tending to their needs of food, water and shelter. It is with sadness that we bid farewell to our much-loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, but we take solace that the burdens of this life have come to an end. Her journey has been long and at times arduous, but her tenacity of spirit, love, compassion, kind and generous nature, deep inner beauty and strength of spirit remain. We feel blessed to have had her in our lives. Relatives and friends will be welcomed by her family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 2 pm for a memorial service. Reception to follow. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, September 18, 2018 Purchase, Rev. Samuel Raymond With deep regret, the Purchase family acknowledges the death of Rev. Samuel Raymond Purchase on June 10, 2018 in Ottawa, at the blessed age of 100. Born September 23, 1917 in Charles Brook, N.L., he was called to the ministry at an early age and went on to serve many United Church congregations in the Atlantic region: Glovertown, Curling, and Bay Roberts, N.L., Newcastle, Woodstock, N.B, Glace Bay and Sydney River. He was a renaissance man, a free thinker, jack of all trades. He freely supported interdenominational, inclusive worship, same-sex marriage, and gender equality, in a time when such ideas could divide a congregation. He was a poet, artist, musician, salmon fisherman and avid reader. Rev. Ray was known for his ability to get the utmost attention from his congregation with his impressive 15 minute sermons, from memory. He loved the church, and with Elsie, shared a profound love for the people of the communities they served. Rev. Ray is survived by his children, Elayne Bonnell (Ray), Ottawa, Ont.; Peter Purchase (Flora), Goose Bay, Labrador; and Joanne Renaud, Mahone Bay. He was blessed with grandchildren, Aaron, Evan, John, Mark; and great-grandchildren, Dahlia, Owen, Penelope, Christopher, and Pauly Jordyn. He is also survived by nephew, Franklin Purchase (Cathy); and great nephews, Craig Purchase (Julie), Kevin Purchase in Newfoundland; and sister-in-law, Grace Harris, Moncton, N.B. He was predeceased by his wife, Elsie (2001); son-in-law, Maurice Renaud (2015). A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in Knox United Church, Glace Bay, on September 23rd at 2 p.m. "One day when my journey is done, when by the power of the sun, I am carried forth as snow or rain from mountaintop, Then I will experience second birth. The Cape Breton Post, September 16, 2018 MacDonald, Walter Leslie Passed Away: September 13, 2018 Rest now our dear dad Blessed are the times we had... It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Walter Leslie MacDonald, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, on September 13, 2018 at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Leslie was born March 3, 1932, the son of Ernest and Susan (Leamon) MacDonald of Burnt Islands, NL. Leslie began working as a fisherman at a very young age on the eastern coast of Newfoundland. He met his wife of 63 years, Emily Butler, in Burnt Islands. When they married in 1955, they crossed the Gulf to settle in Louisbourg where they raised their family. Leslie went on to work on a freighter, sailing to many places such as Venezuela. He did off shore fishing including sword fishing (in which he was an accurate striker), worked with Imperial Oil, and lastly was a self-employed inshore fisherman until his retirement in 1995. After retiring he enjoyed hunting, lake fishing, getting together with friends for a card game, and camping in the northern peninsula of NL and around Cape Breton Island. The joys of retirement were cut short when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1999. Leslie shared his love of his family with his love of the sea, knowing the waters around Louisbourg like the back of his hand. Leslie is survived by his devoted wife, Emily; his children, Shane (Ruby), Lower Sackville, Gary (Ann Elizabeth), George's River and Wendy (Steve) Campbellcroft, ON; brother, Percy (Meg), Halifax; sister-in-law, Christine MacDonald, Port aux Basques, NL; his five grandchildren, Jacqueline, Elizabeth, Alycia, Eric and Brett; his six great-grandchildren, Daniel, Shane, Hope, Titus, Lydia and Abigail; his many nieces and nephews; his very special aunt, Evelyn Leamon, Burnt Islands, NL. He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Sadie (Keeping), Elizabeth (Duckworth), and brother, Robert. The family would like to thank Dr. Clarke and the staff of Parkstone, Halifax and Harbourstone, Sydney for all their care of Leslie. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends gathered for prayers with Reverend Art Nash at Snow's Funeral Home Chapel, Halifax on Sunday, September 16. Sail on, sail on... Upon the waters oh so blue Where the sunrises and sunsets Continue to comfort you May we all meet again upon the rocky shores Embrace and live on together Where grieving will be no more. It is with broken hearts the family announce the unexpected passing of Sylvia Mae Baker Moulton of Burin at the age of 72 years on September 6, 2018 after a short illness. Sylvia grew up in Epworth, in a family of faith and love. She spoke often of cousins who were more like siblings. Early days were spent at the little United church in Epworth where her foundation of faith and music ministry began. In 1966 she married the love of her life, started a family and joined the Salvation Army where a life of love and faith continued. Sylvia gave countless hours to her church in Burin through children's , women's and music ministry. For 34 years she was known as the face and voice at Dr Edgar Mayo's clinic. They worked together to provide the best health care they could to the friends she met there. In retirement, she loved her summers at the cabin, enjoying visits from friends and family near and far. Instead of the demands of work, days and hours where spent sewing and knitting, creating many quilts and gifts that will be treasured by family and friends forever. The time she was blessed to spend at the old library quilters group brought her much enjoyment and close friendships. More recent years saw her teach vacation bible school at The Salvation Army St. John's Citadel and apart of the music ministry at The Salvation Army Grand Bank. Her ministry went beyond her own church to providing music at area churches, funerals, retirement home visits and countless gospel concerts she had been involved with across the burin peninsula. Sylvia expressed an unwavered strong faith in the days leading to her death. She knew whatever the outcome, God was in control. She leaves to mourn her husband of 52 years, Samuel who was by her side to the end. Son James -Sheri-lynn and beloved granddaughter Jenna, daughter Lynette-Deon, sister Suzanne-Austin, brother Leroy-Phyllis, sister-in-law Gertrude, sister-in-law Joy-Ron, sister-in-law Major Tina-Cecil, special Aunts Hazel and Elizabeth, nieces, nephews, cousins and a large circle of family and friends. Predeceased by parents Margaret and Scott Bake and brothers John and Carlson (Bud). The family will forever be grateful to Dr Edgar Mayo and the team of nurses at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre along with Dr. Robert Hewitt, Dr. Organ, Dr. Popadivk, Dr. Pam Pike, Dr. Ken Ledez and the team at 5 South B, Health Sciences Centre.
