The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 29, 2018 Blundell, Cecil Harry Maxwell It is with saddened hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Cecil Blundell on Monday, November 26, 2018 in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish at the age of 80 years. He was surrounded by his loving wife of 59 years, Nellie, and many of his family members at the time of his passing. Born May 21, 1938, the fifth of six children, to the late Max and Maud (George) Blundell. Cecil was predeceased by his sister, Hazel; and brother, Clarence. The family lived in Hickman's Harbour until he moved to Grand Falls - Windsor in 1968. Cecil was a devoted husband and father to his children, Bernice, Marie, and Glenn. They lived in Grand Falls - Windsor, N.L., where he was proud to have worked almost 40 years as a member of the Canadian National Railway where he held roles as Conductor and Brakeman. In his spare time, Cecil took immaculate care of his home, was a lover of cars, driving, and Western movies. After his retirement from the railway, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and catching up with former co-workers reminiscing about the good times they shared on the railroad. He was also a loving grandfather, great-grandfather, and a dear friend of many. He will be forever remembered for his charm, wit, and ability to make everyone laugh. Cecil is survived by his wife, Nellie (Woolridge); his children, Bernice (Ernie) Wotton, Antigonish; Marie Sharpe (Alf), St. John's, N.L.; Glenn (Mica) Blundell, Toronto, Ont.; grandchildren, Lewis (Lisa), Sara (Dustin), Kyle (Sarah), Bryce (Lisa), Rebecca and Dylan; great-grandson, Tate. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis (late George) Butt; brothers, Fred (late Josephine) and Wallace (Janet) Blundell; three nieces, one nephew, along with several additional family members and close friends who held a special place in his heart. Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, November 30th in Vardy's Funeral Home, Hickman's Harbour, N.L. Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, December 1st at 11 a.m. in The Salvation Army Citadel, Hickman's Harbour. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 22, 2018 Ronald John "Ron" Merchant It is with profound sadness, the family of the late Ronald John "Ron" Merchant, 97, Trenton, announce his entrance into the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Monday, November 19, 2018. Born on July 17, 1921 in St. John's, N.L., and raised in Sydney, he was a son of the late John Robert and Jeanie (Hewitt) Merchant. He served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the Second World War, where he was stationed in Holland on D-Day. During his service, he met his first love, Gwen Meredith in Coventry, England with whom he shared 37 years until her passing in 1980. Later, he married his second love, Joyce (Campbell) Coldwell with whom he shared another 37 years. Ron possessed many outstanding characteristics and values, a strong work ethic and compassion for those in need. His great sense of humour will not be forgotten. He operated the former Merchant Photo's, Main Street, Trenton for many years, having photographed for schools in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Following he was employed with the Better Business Bureau of Nova Scotia, the former Court Judgement Reports and was an estimator with Burge Bros. Transfer and Storage. Ron served on the Trenton Town Council and was instrumental in the development and opening of Steeltown Park. The current Trenton Park has a trail named "Founding Trail" which honours Ron's name. He was a long-time supporter of The Gideons in Pictou County, charter member of the former Trenton Lion's Club and co-founder of the former Christian Community Centre, Trenton. Ron's enduring faith in God led him to be involved in many activities from Bible teaching, discipleship and evangelism. He leaves a rich legacy of love and devotion. Surviving are his second wife, Joyce (Campbell); daughter, Susan Merchant; step-children, Barry Coldwell, Dr. Sherri (Doug Nickerson) Coldwell, Kandy (Laurie "chosen son") Clyburne, Robbie (Gail) Coldwell; grandchildren, Sara (Jozef Pinter) Merchant, Clark (Jane MacAulay) Merchant, Lee (Tara) Merchant, Tasha MacDonald (John Campbell), Chanci MacDonald (Chris), Bryce Nickerson, Steven, Sarah and Mark Wood; Benjamin and Jeremy Voutour; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Merchant, Adrian Merchant-Pinter, Jamie Merchant-Pinter, Evan Merchant, Braelyn Merchant, Liam Merchant, Rylan Merchant, Madalyn Campbell and Evelyn MacDonald. Unfortunately there is no source listed for this information. Michael might be the son of Patrick Donnelly and Eleanor Coony who were married in Harbour Grace on April 7, 1832. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 20, 2018 Mildred Pauline "Millie" Dalrymple Age 93, of Wynn Park, Truro passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Port Au Port, N.L. on September 30, 1925, Mildred was a daughter of the late Charles and Cecilia Hines, who died when Mildred was a baby. Mildred moved to Nova Scotia from Newfoundland as a young woman and worked for many years as a Councillor at the Youth Training Centre in Bible Hill. Mildred was very proud to have worked with the children, and when speaking of her experiences at the Centre, it would always put a smile on her face. Mildred had a heart of gold and will be missed by more friends than one could possibly imagine. Mildred is survived by her older sister, Gladys MacDonald, Newfoundland; son, Ivan (Francine) Marche, Cape Breton; grandson, Michael and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Dalrymple; brother, Clyde Hines; foster parents, James and Jessie Pike and foster brother, Russell Pike. Cremation has taken place with no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 22nd at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Lower Truro Road, Truro; Dr. Dave Sutherland officiating. The Cape Breton Post, November 19, 2018 Monday Hillier, Gordon - 76 YRS Passed November 17, 2018 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Gordon Hillier, age 76, announce his passing on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney. Born in Fortune, Newfoundland on August 24, 1942. Gordon was the son of the late Gordon and Myrtle (Tibbo) Hillier. He worked for many years at the Cape Breton Development Corp, Prince Mine. He could often be found at the local Tim Horton having a coffee and shooting the breeze with his many buddies who will miss him dearly. Gordon leaves behind his children, Jacqueline Scott (Randy) and Donald Hillier (Kim,) both of Sydney, along with their mother Marie, and his daughters, Laura Lee and Lorraine, both of Ontario, their mother the late Rose. He is also survived by his brothers, Carl (Donna), Evan (Karen), Cecil (Carol), all of North Sydney, David (Debrah) of Bridgewater, Eric (Gisela) of Edmonton, Rollie (Laverne) of Prince George; sisters, Beverly (Mark) Aucoin of New Waterford, Marilyn (Casper) Petipas of Edmonton and Colleen Hillier of Manitoba, along with 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, as well as special friend, Bernie Fiander who will dearly miss him.     2. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 14, 2018 Brinson, Calvin "Dan" It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dan Brinson, age 66 of Wentzells Lake. Dan passed after a courageous battle with cancer, on November 4, 2018 in Fisherman's Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He was a son of the late Harry and Violet (Elliott) Brinson, born September 5, 1952 at Change Island, N.L. Although there are many things that come to mind when thinking of Dan, he was an unrivalled crib player who added points so quickly, that no one could question. He loved to travel. When winter came, rest assured he would message you from far and away. He had a wonderful passion for food that some would dare to compare, especially those fortunate enough to try his succulent prime rib. And, he was adventurous, he was always looking for the next challenge, the next thrill, the next experience, the next new beginning. He is survived by his son, Shayne (Amanda) Brinson; daughter, Danielle (Patrick) Brinson; brothers, Dawson Brinson, Tony (Dauphne) Brinson, Paul (Missy) Brinson; sister, Judy (Eric) White; stepmother, Netta (Alcock) Brinson; and auntie, Geraldine Brinson. He is also survived by is grandchildren, Chloe and Logan Brinson, Hayden and Reegan McCarthy.     2. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 13, 2018 Starratt, Ella "Mae" Age 89 of East Chezzetcook, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 9, 2018 in The Birches in Musquodoboit Harbour. Born in Brooklyn, N.L., she was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Belle (Skiffington) Stares. Mae was a little woman with a big personality. She loved her friends and family with her whole heart, she worked hard, and she put 110 per cent effort into everything she did. She was loved by everyone who knew her, and she touched many lives; during her years working as a PCW at The Birches, as well as being an active member in her community. She loved music, darts, a game of crib, and a good cup of tea. She is, and will always be, dearly missed and very lovingly remembered.
