    1. [NL-ROOTS] Obituary - Sparkes, Melvin John
    2. The Cape Breton Post, December 14, 2018 Sparkes, Melvin John Passed: December 12, 2018 We, the family of the late Melvin Sparkes, regret to announce his sudden but peaceful passing on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Mel was born in Cornerbrook NL and resided in Florence for the remainder of his years. Mel had a great sense of humor, even sarcastic at times, but always to the point. He devoted his life to working hard and taking care of his family. Nothing meant more to Mel then taking care of the ones he loved. Mel lived a quiet life after the passing of his beloved Mary. Mel spent many years working in Ontario at Toronto Transit Commission and retired from Devco's Prince Mine, where he made many great friends over the years. He enjoyed learning to cook these past few years and became really good at it. He also liked to keep up with the news of the day and had a keen interest in politics and hockey. Mel was always up for a good conversation. Mel is survived by his daughters, Dianne, Debbie (Bob), Denise and daughter-in-law, Wendy. He is also survived by brothers, Ernie (Georgette), Gerald, and Woodrow (Sharon); grandchildren, Jason, Melanie, Jennifer, Jillian, Norm, Melody, Bob, Dwayne and Christopher and 17 great-grandchildren. Mel was predeceased by his parents, John & Violet (Young) Sparkes; his wife, Mary (Steffens); his son, Mel Sparkes; grandson, Nick; sisters, Evelyn Sparkes, Audrey Harris, and Shirley Crane, and brothers, Donald, Garfield, Roy, Winston, Carmen and Gordon. The family would like to thank all the ER staff at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, along with his family doctor, Dr. Andrew Wawer and his staff for the compassion and care they showed Dad over the years. Mel was one of a kind and will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him and will find comfort being together again with Mary. Cremation has taken place. Mel's family will receive visitors on Sunday, Dec. 16 from 2-3 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at 3 p.m.in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main St., Sydney Mines, with Major Corey Vincent officiating. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. Now that the distractions of the day have slipped into the quietness of the night I now feel the true emptiness that life without you brings. Praying that God has enough Captain Morgan's in heaven. Take er cool Pa.

    1. [NL-ROOTS] Obituary - WOOLFREY, Gilbert 'Jack'
    2. johanna hardy
    3. Waterloo Region Record, 11 Dec, 2018, page A6 (with pictures) Obituary for Gilbert Jack Woolfrey (1924 – 2018) On Wednesday, December 5th 2018 our family lost its patriarch, counsellor and moral compass. Gilbert "Jack" Woolfrey passed away peacefully at the age of 94. He has left behind the love of his life and wife of 69 years, Joyce Kathleen (Fowler); their daughter Lois Smith and her husband Ian (family: Jennifer, Lorraine D’Alessio and husband Richard, with their daughters Carmen and Zara); son Bill Woolfrey and his wife Janet (family: Evan and his wife Kathy, with their daughter Elinor; son, Cameron); son Paul Woolfrey and his wife Mary (family: Sara Cameron and husband Scott; Emma; Jack). Dad is also survived by his sister Margaret "Peg" Hall, sister in law Mary McGugan and husband Hugh. Predeceased by his sisters Elizabeth Mosey, Marion Pitt and her husband David, brother-in-law, John Hall and nieces Kathy Smith and Cindy Mosey as well as Keith and Irene Fowler. Many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear life-long friends in Ontario, Newfoundland and B.C. hold fond memories of Dad. Jack was born and raised in Newfoundland until the time his father (a minister with the United Church) was relocated to Moorefield, Ontario where he met Joyce and they fell in love. He served in WW11 before starting a career in education, becoming Co-ordinator of Guidance for the Halton Board of Education. The family was raised in Burlington in the supportive neighbourhoods of Ghent Avenue and Wellington Square United Church. Jack retired in 1982 when he and Joyce built their dream home on the shores of the Bay of Quinte, a country retreat that family and friends loved to visit. They moved to Kitchener-Waterloo in 1992, eventually living at Lanark Heights where Joyce still resides. The family wishes to thank all the Lanark staff for their caring support of our father and our family as we have walked this life journey together. Jack loved to tell stories from his exceptional memory, entertaining us with the detail of his colourful childhood. Dad was loving and generous, he provided for his family and stood faithfully by his children. We have known no better man, yet it was Mom and Dad together who saw us through life’s challenges and successes. Funeral service in the Chapel at Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 617 King St. North, Waterloo on Saturday, December 15 at 11:30 A.M. Visitation one hour prior to the service. Reception to follow.
