    1. [NL-ROOTS] The Daily News (1963)
    2. Selected obituaries/marriages, etc. transcribed from the 1963 editions of The Daily News, published at St. John's, NL The Daily News February 1, 1963 Page: 8 Spaniard's Bay - Gosse - Smith Wedding The marriage of Beatrice Viola, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln Gosse of Spaniard's Bay, to Edward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Smith of Tilton, took place at the United Church, Harbour Grace, on Saturday, December 15, at 7 p.m. The ceremony was performed by the minister, Rev. Wilfred Vardy, B.A., B.D., while the wedding music was played by Mrs. Val Webber. Attending the bride was her sister, Mary, as bridesmaid, and Mrs. Maxwell Adams, the groom's sister, was the matron of honor. The groom was attended by the bride's brother, Harry, and by his brother-in-law, Maxwell Adams. The reception was held at the home of the groom's parents where the usual toasts were honored. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have since taken up residence in St. John's where Mrs. Smith continues her work with the Dept. of Finance and the groom is employed with a construction firm. The Daily News March 20, 1963 Page: 9 Spaniard's Bay Mrs. Mary Jane Gosse, one of the oldest residents of Spaniard's Bay, passed away March 9, at the Carbonear Hospital. Up until quite recently, Mrs. Gosse had been blessed with good health and kept fairly busy visiting with her sons and daughters on occasion. In her more active days she was a faithful church worker and a regular worshiper; her last attendance at service was less than two years ago. Possessing a pleasing personality and quiet charm, she was a welcome guest among old and young; the affection which was showered upon her by those who knew her was well deserved, for from her heart came love, kindness, sympathy and understanding. She was the mother of a large family and her life was mainly devoted to being the good mother that she was, sharing in her children's joys and sorrows, helping and advising, working and praying, and showing them by example the pattern of a life well lived. Her memory will be precious to her three sons, Bertram (with whom she resided), James and Thomas, and by her five daughters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Robert Seymour), Florence (Mrs. Albert Smith), Rita (Mrs. Robert Neil), all residing at Spaniard's Bay, Susie (Mrs. William Yetman, Gander) and Julia (Mrs. Ambrose Parsons, Harbour Grace); 35 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. A brother James Mercer (St. John's), and two sisters, Julia (Mrs. William Barrett, Glace Bay, N.S.) and Millie (Mrs. Nath Barrett, Spaniard's Bay), survive her. She was laid to rest in the family plot March 11 following the service at Holy Redeemer Church, conducted by the Rev. E. Willis. "On that Happy Easter Morning, All the graves their dead restore; Father, sister, child and mother Meet once more." The Daily News May 15, 1963 Page: 15 Spaniard's Bay Wilfred Gosse - News was received here on Sunday of the sudden passing in St. John's of Wilfred Gosse, just three days short of his fifty-second birthday. A former resident of Spaniard's Bay, Mr. Gosse with his wife had been living in the capital for a number of years, and although he had not been well for about seven years, his passing came as a complete shock. He and his wife had been visiting relatives at Mount Pearl on Saturday night. Early on Sunday morning he suffered a severe heart attack and the end came before the ambulance carrying him reached the hospital. Burial will be at Spaniard's Bay. To his wife and three sisters we offer profound sympathy in their sudden bereavement. The Daily News September 5, 1963 Page: 2 Spaniard's Bay - Jewer - Kennedy Wedding The marriage of Bernice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Kennedy, to Victor Clayton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Jewer, took place on Saturday, August 31, at 7:30 p.m., in the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Spaniard's Bay, with the Rev. E. Willis officiating. The bride, dressed in traditional white, was given in marriage by her father. Matron of honour was the groom's sister-in-law, Mrs. Wallace Jewer, while the bridesmaid was the bride's sister Carole. Flower girls were Joyce Jewer and Sylvia Jewer, both nieces of the groom. Attending the groom were his brothers Wallace and the bride's brother-in-law, Lorne Piercey. The reception was held at Mercer's Restaurant, Spaniard's Bay, where the wedding supper was served and the usual toasts honoured. Mr. and Mrs. Jewer have taken up residence in Spaniard's Bay. The Daily News April 18, 1963 Page: 14 Spaniard's Bay - Herbert Lundrigan, 877893 Canadian Army, a veteran of World Ward 1, passed away at his residence in Upper Island Cove on Thursday, April 11. He was 65. Born in Upper Island Cove in 1897, he enlisted in the Canadian Army at Sydney, Nova Scotia, in March 1918. He was wounded at Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917, but he was not discharged until December, 1918. In February, 1919, he married Miss Mabel Hussey. For a number of years he worked on Bell Island and for a short while in Argentia until ill health forced him to relinquish the activities of normal living. He never complained, and he will be remembered by his family and friends as a man who possessed a pleasing personality, a sense of humour, and an understanding and sympathetic heart. His passing, which was unexpected, came as a severe blow to his wife and children who mourn an irreparable loss. He leaves three sons, Walter in Belfountain, Ontario, Rex in Toronto, Josiah at home: one daughter, Betty (Mrs. Alfred Smith) in Spaniard's Bay; nine grandchildren, two brothers, Walter in Whitbourne and Willis in Boston, Massachusetts; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Coombs, Upper Island Cove. F. R. Rowsell. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a ballerina gown of white nylon lace and chiffon, and her shoulder length veil was held in place by a floral arrangement. Her bouquet was pink and white carnations with springs of maidenhair fern. The maid of honour was the bride's sister Mary, while another sister Ethel was bridesmaid, and both wore blue. Other bridesmaids were the groom's sister Phyllis and Alfreda Jones, both of whom wore gowns of lemon. The groom was attended by James Crane as best man, and by Tom Mercer, as well as by his two brothers, James and Ben. The reception was held at the Canadian Legion Hall, Upper Island Cove, where the wedding supper was served and the usual toasts honoured, with Mr. Nath Jones as toastmaster. Mr. and Mrs. Titford have since left for Greenwood, N.S., where the groom is attached to the Royal Canadian Army. Every good wish is extended for their happiness.

As a neighbour he was one of the best, and in the various phases of community life, George could always be depended upon to do his share. Such men cannot leave a community without being sorely missed. The Daily News July 25, 1963 Page: 2 Spaniard's Bay - Anthony - Crane Wedding The marriage of Beckie, eldest daughter of Mrs. Theresa Anthony and the late William Anthony of Spaniard's Bay to Clyde, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Crane of Upper Island Cove, was solemnized in the Church of Holy Redeemer, Spaniard's Bay, on Saturday, July 20 at 5 p.m. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. L. A. J. Ludlow, rector of St. Paul's, Harbour Grace. Miss Carol Vokey was the organist. Dressed in traditional white, the bride entered the church with her brother Moses who gave her in marriage. She was attended by her sister Bessie as maid of honour, by the groom's sister-in-law, Mrs. Marina Crane, as bridesmaid, and by her sister Daphne as junior bridesmaid. The bride's two small sisters, Gloria and Theresa, were flower girls, and they, as well as the bridesmaids, were dressed in white. All carried bouquets of red and white carnations. Attending the groom were Edward Crane, Graham Greenland and Howard Crane. Following the ceremony a reception was held at Dawe's Restaurant, Bay Roberts, where the wedding supper was served and the usual toasts honoured. As did most of his contemporaries, the late Mr. Barrett in his younger days went to Labrador as a fisherman, and later worked for some years as a miner on Bell Island. He was a friendly man, and he will be missed by his neighbours who could always depend upon him to lend a helping hand when needed. His passing is mourned by his widow, four sons, Francis at Hilton, David at St. Lawrence, William and Fred at Spaniard's Bay; one daughter, Myrtle, (Mrs. James Bradbury) at Shearstown; three brothers, William and Joseph at Spaniard's Bay, and Harvey in the USA; three sisters, Mary Jane (Mrs. James Murrin) at Spaniard's Bay, Elizabeth, (Mrs. George Parsons), and Eliza, (Mrs. Albert Caravan) both at Bay Roberts. His funeral was held on Thursday afternoon and was attended by the LOA, of which he was a life-long member. The service at Holy Redeemer Church was conducted by the Rev. E. Willis and burial was in the family plot. We offer sympathy to those who mourn. The bride was attended by Marjorie, Mrs. Murray Stratton, sister of the groom, while the groom was ably supported by the bride's brother, Thomas (Jr.). The ceremony was performed by Major Pond, a family friend, who, a few year's ago, was in charge of the Salvation Army Corps of this town. The reception was held at the home of the bride's brother, Tom, where the usual toast list was honoured. The young couple has taken up residence at Toronto where the groom is employed. Their many friends both in this town and Bishop's Cove wish them every success and happiness in the future. The Daily News January 16, 1963 Page: 14 Mrs. Cecily Butt passed peacefully away at her home here on Tuesday, January 8, at the age of eighty-six years. The late Mrs. Butt was a remarkably active woman for nearly all of her long life and it was only two years ago that she had a doctor attend her for the first time ever. As many of her generation she raised a large family in an era when there was never an over abundance of material blessings, but still she managed as best she could and always with a smile. Since her husband's death about twenty-five years ago she had been lovingly cared for by her daughter Edna. Surviving are four daughters, Susie in New York, Julia (Mrs. Lynch) at Paradise, C.B., Cecily (Mrs. William Noseworthy) and Edna at Spaniard's Bay; four sons, William at Paradise, C.B., Walter at Heart's Content, Selby at St. John's, and Stanley at Spaniard's Bay, and a large number of grandchildren. Her funeral took place on Thursday afternoon and after the service in Holy Redeemer Church her remains were laid to rest in the family plot in the church cemetery. The Rev. E. Willis officiated. We offer sympathy to those bereaved.
