The Daily News August 1, 1963 Page: 16 Spaniard's Bay - John Vokey - When John Vokey passed peacefully away on Sunday, July 21, after a very brief illness, the curtain came down, as it were, on a chapter in our local unwritten history. He is the last of a group, who in the dull, tired days before radio and television, did his share to relieve the monotony of the winter evenings by entertaining his neighbours with his merry heart and cheerful wit. He was a born comedian, ready to put on a show of his own at the drop of the hat. It was little wonder, then, that to distinguish him from another person of the same name, he became known as "Actor Jack". Blessed with good health for all of his eighty years, he was a remarkably active man and very agile, and although he had not carried on his trade of an exterior decorator for some years, he spent much of his time in season in his vegetable garden on the hill. Two days before he died he finished "trenching" his potato patch. Life for him, however, was not always one sweet song. He saw seven of his eleven children, all adults, committed to mother earth. His wife predeceased him. All this, coupled with the strain and stress of surviving in an era not to generous with this world's goods, was a test for the very strongest. He had to carry on. He was a member of the Loyal Orange Association and the Royal Black Preceptory; members of which organization attended his funeral which was held on Tuesday afternoo0n to the Church of the Holy Redeemer where the service for the Dead was conducted by the Rev. L.A. J. Ludlow. Burial was in the family plot. Surviving are three sons, Norman and Richard at Spaniard's Bay, Philip at Bell Island, and one daughter, Mrs. Emma Noseworthy, at Bell Island, as well as a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. To those who mourn we offer sincere sympathy. The Daily News October 17, 1963 Page: 10 Spaniard's Bay - Sadie Vokey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Vokey, passed away at the Carbonear Hospital on Tuesday evening, Oct. 8, at the tender age of fourteen years. Although she was never a robust child, yet she tried to do what the other children did without complaining; she played their games with them, and she seldom missed a day from school where she managed to keep up her grades. She would have been in grade nine, but during the holidays her health began to fade and when school reopened in September she was not well enough to go. Still her parents did not realize that she could leave them so quickly, for less than 48 hours after she had been admitted to the hospital, her lovely smile and her quiet manner were lost to them, and her soul returned to God who gave it. When the funeral was held on Thursday afternoon the grade nine class and some of her friends from the other classes preceded the hearse to the Church of the Holy Redeemer. It was an unusual occurrence and sad to watch. At the church the Office for the Burial of the Dead was read by the Rev. E. Willis. Burial was in the family plot. To her father, to her two older sisters, Daphne (Mrs. Bud Reid) and Lily, both living in St. John's, and to her younger sisters Inez and Bonita at home, all of whom will miss her so very much, we offer our sincere sympathy. The Daily News October 12, 1963 Page: 10 Spaniard's Bay - Whalen - Dawson Wedding The marriage of Eileen Patricia, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Whalen of Spaniard's Bay, to John J., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dawson of Bay Roberts, was solemnized in the Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Harbor Grace, on Saturday, October 5, at 7 p.m., with the Rev. William Shallow, P.P., performing the ceremony. Miss Jean Lynch played the wedding music. Given in marriage by her father, the bride chose a lovely gown in traditional white, with matching accessories. Her maid of honor was her sister, Agnes, while the bridegroom's eldest sister Anne was bridesmaid; both were dressed in gowns of gold satin. The bridegroom's youngest sister Mary was a charming floweregirl in her pretty dress of lime green. Attending the groom were his brother Ignatius and his cousin, Ronald Hickey. The reception was held at Dawe's Restaurant where the bride's mother, assisted by the groom's mother, received. Mrs. Whalen wore a woolen dress of turquoise with white accessories, while Mrs. Dawson wore beige. After the wedding supper Magistrate W. W. Mercer performed the duties of toastmaster. The toast to the bride was proposed by Rev. Father Shallow, to the bridesmaids by the bridegroom, to the bride's parents by Mr. Ronald Hichey Sr., and to the parents of the bridegroom by Mr. E. H. Vokey. The Rev. Father Hogan, P.P., of North River also spoke to the wedding party and guests. The newly weds will take up temporary residence in St. John's while Mr. Dawson completes his training at Memorial University; Mrs. Dawson will continue with her teaching at the Roman Catholic school at St. Thomas, near St. John's

    2. Selected obituaries/marriages, etc. transcribed from the 1963 editions of The Daily News, published at St. John's, NL The Daily News February 20, 1963 Page: 5 Spaniard's Bay - Neal - Tipple Wedding The marriage of Alma, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Neal of Port au Port, to Clayton Samuel, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Tipple of Bay Roberts, was solemnized in St. Matthew's Church, Bay Roberts, on Thursday, February 14, at 7 p.m. The Rev. I. Butler, rector of the parish, performed the double-ring ceremony, while Mrs. Butler was the organist. Given in marriage by her father, the bride looked radiant in a floor-length gown of traditional white; her shoulder-length veil was held in place by a shimmering coronet. Attending her as maid of honour was here cousin, Miss Lena Brown, who wore a gown of pink chiffon over satin; bridesmaids were Miss Marguerite Mercer and Miss Thelma Hodder, who wore gowns similar to the maid of honour, except that they were aqua in colour. Attending the groom were Mr. Ed Barrett, his brother-in-law, as best man. Mr. Nick Powell and Mr. Gerald Mercer as bridesboys. Ushers were Mr. Gerald Mercer and Mr. Douglas Mercer. The reception was held at the spacious dining-hall of Dawe's Restaurant where the wedding supper was served to nearly one hundred guests. Mr. Robert Pepper was the master of ceremonies. The toast to the bride was proposed by the Rev. I. Butler and was responded to by the groom: other toasts were duly honoured. The balance of the evening was spent in dancing. After the honeymoon, which is being spent on the Avalon, the groom will return to his work with the CNR and the bride plans to resume her duties as chief of personnel at Dawe's Restaurant where she has been employed. They will reside at Bay Roberts. We wish them every happiness. (Photo by E. H. Vokey) The Daily News October 4, 1963 Page: 8 Spaniard's Bay - Bartholomew Neil - Although he had been ill for a number of years during which his family spent many watchful and anxious hours, not even they expected this Monday morning the swift and peacefully ending of a beloved husband and father. Bartholomew, familiarly known as Bart Neil, was seventy-one, and until he was stricken with illness about three or four years ago, his days were anything but idle. In his earlier years he prosecuted the Labrador fishery, but later carried on the carpentry trade and worked on many construction projects. We knew him as an amiable man, but those who lived closer to him knew him also as a good neighbour and a man of more deeds than words. He was the type of man that any small community can ill-afford to lose. To his sorrowing widow (the former Jessie M. Hutchings), to his sons, Warren at Spaniard's Bay, Horace at St. John's, Reginald (teacher) at Corner Brook, to his daughter Beulah (Mrs. George Dawe) at Port de Grave and to his nine grandchildren, we offer sincere sympathy. May his soul through the mercy of God rest in peace. The Daily News April 18, 1963 Page: 14 Spaniard's Bay - Sarah Noseworthy - Her family and friends were deeply shocked on Tuesday, April 9, when death came almost suddenly to Mrs. Sarah Noseworthy, 69, at the residence of her son here. On Sunday she spent the afternoon with her daughter at Harbour Grace and she spent part of the evening with another daughter, Effie. It was not until after she retired for the night that she took ill and suffered a severe paralytic stroke, she passed away on the following day. Left a widow thirty-three years ago, she raised up her six children as only a devoted mother can. Her task was not an easy one, but her diligence coupled with a strong faith in God saw her through many anxious days. Ever a devout member of the Anglican Church, she was a constant worshipper in the parish church. She was a member of the C.E.W.A. for almost fifty years. As a neighbour she was always a tower of strength to those in sickness and bereavement, and her gentle and reassuring smile brought comfort to many. To her children she was a guiding light and her memory will be always green to them. Her funeral was held on Thursday afternoon the Church of the Holy Redeemer where the Rev. E. Willis conducted the burial service. Interment was in the family plot. Mourning their sad loss are two sons, George, with whom she resided, and Ernest in Shearstown; three daughters, Effie (Mrs. Richard G. Noseworthy), Livie (Mrs. William Barrett) in Spaniard's Bay, and Winnie (Mrs. Thomas Pike) in Harbour Grace, and twenty grandchildren. Another son, James, predeceased her by eleven months. May her soul, through the mercy of God rest in peace. The Daily News February 13, 1963 Page: 16 Carbonear - O'Driscoll - Fitzgerald Wedding At St. Patrick's Church, on February 2nd, Margaret O'Driscoll, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James O'Driscoll, South side, became the bride of William Fitzgerald, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Fitzgerald, of Tilton. Rt. Rev. Monsignor Peddle officiated at the double-ring ceremony. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a floor-length dress of white, with shoulder length veil and carried a bouquet of red and white roses. She was attended by her sister Pauline, who was dressed in pink with matching veil and flowers. Leo Fitzgerald, brother of the groom, acted as best man. After the ceremony, a reception was held in the R.C. School, Tilton, where the happy couple received the congratulations and best wishes of their many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald are now residing at Tilton. The writer extends to them best wishes for smooth sailing over the sea of matrimony. One stepson Edward at Stephenville. Funeral services, which were held at St. Mark's Anglican Church, Shearstown, were attended by Daughters of Cromwell, L.O.B.A., of which organization; the late Mrs. Parsons was a member. Interment was in the family plot in the Anglican Cemetery. Rev. Isaac Butler officiated. 1. [NL-ROOTS] The Daily News (1963)
    2. Selected obituaries/marriages, etc. transcribed from the 1963 editions of The Daily News, published at St. John's, NL The Daily News July 18, 1963 Page: 2 Spaniard's Bay - Mrs. Winnie Menchions, wife of Duncan Menchions, passed away at the General Hospital, St. John's on Friday, July 12, just a few hours after she had been admitted to that institution. Although she had been unwell for some months, her passing came as a shock to her family and friends. Burial took place on Sunday afternoon. The service at the Church of St. John the Evangelist was conducted by the rector, the Rev. F. R. Rowsell. Mourning their sad loss are her husband, one son Isaac, on brother, James Peddle, two sisters, Mrs. John M. Gosse and Mrs. Fannie Noseworthy. To those who mourn we offer sincere sympathy. The Daily News January 14, 1963 Page: 5 Bay Roberts - Menchions - Mercer Wedding A Quiet but pretty wedding was solemnized at Holy Redeemer Church, Spaniard's Bay, December 29th, when the rector united in holy matrimony, Cavell, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mercer, Bay Roberts, to Harry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Menchions, Bishop's Cove. The bride, given in marriage by her father, her only attendant was her sister-in-law, Mrs. Everett Mercer. The groom was ably supported by Mr. Everett Mercer, brother of the bride. Following the ceremony, the bridal party motored to Barney's Restaurant, Topsail Road, where the reception was held. The newlyweds have taken up residence in Bay Roberts. Best wishes for future happiness is expressed. The Daily News July 18, 1963 Page: 2 Spaniard's Bay - William Mercer - We extend sincere sympathy to Mrs. Violet Mercer and family of Shearstown on the tragic death of her son William at Toronto on Tuesday, July 9, as a result of an accident sustained on a construction project on Friday before. Although Bill was only 21 years of age and had gone to Toronto only about a year ago, he was well known and well liked in Spaniard's Bay especially among the younger folks, many of whom mourn his untimely passing. May his soul through the mercy of God rest in peace. The Daily News July 25, 1963 Page: 2 Spaniard's Bay - William Mercer - The community of Shearstown and the surrounding area was shocked last week when the news was received here from Toronto that William Mercer of this community had died from multiple injuries which he received a few days earlier while working on a construction job in Toronto. A couple of days after the accident hopes were high when we heard that William was responding well to doctors' treatment, but the sad news of his passing was received on Wednesday morning. Bill, as his friends called him, was born at Shearstown 21 years ago and spent most of his short lifetime there. However, like all young men looking for advancement and a chance to a better lot in life, Bill left last summer for Toronto and been employed there until his unfortunate accident. Bill Mercer was well liked by all who knew him. He had a pleasing personality and soon won the respect of those with whom he came in contact. We shall remember him as a smart young man, well-mannered with never too much to say, and his smile was infectious; yet his understanding seemed well beyond his years. He was a devoted son and a loving brother and he will be sorely missed in the family circle. He leaves to mourn his mother, Mrs. Violet Mercer, two older brothers, Allan and Heber; a sister, Mildred (Mrs. Vic Mercer), and other small sisters all residing at Shearstown. Burial took place in the family plot following the service at St. Mark's Church, Shearstown, on Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Isaac Butler, rector, assisted by the Rev. Bradbury who is here from the U.S.A. on vacation. The church was filled with people who came to pay their last respects to a very fine young man. To those who mourn his passing we offer heartfelt sympathy. "Sometimes it's hard to understand Why these thing have to be, But in His wisdom God has planned Beyond our power to see." The Daily News June 12, 1963 Page: 9 Spaniard's Bay - Drover - Butt Wedding The marriage of Winnifred Lorraine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Drover, of Spaniard's Bay to Wallace Morgan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Butt of ????? was solemnized in the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Spaniard's Bay on Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m. The ceremony was performed by the groom's uncle, the Rev. Donald Morgan, Curate of St. ????? Church, St. John's, assisted by the Rev. E. Willis. The senior choir was in attendance and sang "O Perfect Love" and during the signing of the register, appropriate music was played by Miss Carol Vokey. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a lovely gown of French lace over satin with shoulder-length veil; her bouquet consisted of pink and white carnations. Maid of honour was the bride's sister Rosella and her bridesmaids were her cousin, Elizabeth Murrin, her sister Ruth, and the groom's sister Wanda. All wore gowns of pink nylon net with matching accessories. Attending the groom were Woodrow Normore as best man, and his brothers, Arthur and William Butt. Ushers were John C. Chipman and Clifford Brazill. The Reception was held in the dining hall of Dawe's Restaurant, Bay Roberts, where about one hundred guests partook of the wedding supper, after which the usual toasts were honoured. For her going-away the bride chose a woolen suit of coral with white accessories. After the honeymoon Mr. and Mrs. Butt will take up residence here as the groom is the Conception Bay agent for frozen food distributor in St. John's. We wish them every happiness. The Daily News February 27, 1963 Page: 9 Spaniard's Bay - John Murrin passed away at his residence in Spaniard's Bay on Wednesday evening, February 20. He was 72. In his younger days, Mr. Murrin was a fisherman and spent many summers on the Labrador coast, but subsequently took up carpentry and worked for sometime in the United States and on the Canadian mainland as well as in this province. Until he became ill about 17 years ago he was quite active in community affairs. He was a member of the LOA for half a century and a member of the Royal Black Preceptory for almost as long. Even after illness curtailed much of his activity he was always interested in what was going on, and he loved to receive visits from his old friends and neighbours. His funeral was held on Friday afternoon and was attended by the fraternal organizations. The service at Holy Redeemer Anglican Church was conducted by the Rev. E. Willis. Burial was in the family plot. He is survived by his widow, one son Lorne at Spaniard's Bay, two daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. Gordon Hindy) and Daphne (Mrs. Ray Dooley) both living in St. John's, and by ten grandchildren. One brother, W. J. Murrin, and one sister Fannie (Mrs. George E. Drover), both of Spaniard's Bay, also survive. To those who mourn the passing of a loved one we offer sincere sympathy. The Daily News December 2, 1963 Page: 12 William James Murrin - Passed peacefully away at Carbonear Hospital at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 1, W. J. Murrin of Spaniard's Bay, in his 75th year. Leaving to mourn three sons, Lawrence, Raymond, of Spaniard's Bay, Fred of St. John's; one daughter, Mary (Mrs. A. Vokey) of St. John's; one sister, Fannie (Mrs. George Drover) of Spaniard's Bay; also eleven grandchildren.
