Born in Burgeo, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late William and Naomi Anderson. Gilbert is survived by his loving wife, Eileen (Baker); sister, Mildred (Victor); brother, Philip (Audrey); mother-in-law, Wilma Baker; brothers-in-law, Brent (Joanne), Charlie (Berniece) and Douglas Carter. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Piney and Hilda, and father-in-law, Philip Baker. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Nov. 13, 2013, at the First United Church, Louisbourg, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Emily Duggan officiating. Interment to follow in Willow Grove Cemetery. Lottie Blanch Matthews (July 16, 1921 – November 8, 2013) Passed peacefully away at the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge, St. John's, on Friday, November 8, 2013, Lottie Blanch Matthews of Grand Bank, aged 92 years. Predeceased by husband Percy Matthews; daughter Carolyn; parents, William and Caroline Brushett; brothers, James and Frederick Brushett; and by sister Lillian Fergueson. Leaving to mourn daughters: Janice (Charles) Moores, St. John's, and Mildred Cheverie, Dartmouth. NS; grandchildren: Brad (Noreen) Cheverie, Amanda Cheverie, Dartmouth, NS, and Jennifer (Michael) Faber, Cambridge, ON; great-grandson Trenton Faber, Cambridge, ON; sister Pearl Hatrield, Burin; and sister-in-law Anna Brushett, Antigonish, NS. The Cape Breton Post, November 9, 2013 Malcom Vernon Gary Cooper Born: January 17th, 1946 Passed on: October 26th, 2013 in Howie Centre It is with heavy hearts, that we, the family of Gary Cooper, of Howie Centre, regret to announce his passing at the age of 67 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, after a short battle with cancer. Born in Newfoundland, Gary worked as a fisherman with National Sea, then, later in life, he worked with Dilney Landscaping. He was a former volunteer fireman with East Bay Volunteer Fire Department. Gary leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife of 39 years, Beverly (Harris); daughters, Cheryl (Craig) Wylde, Howie Centre, and Sarah (Joe) MacMullin, Marion Bridge; mother, Dorothy (nee Sparkes); sisters, Jacqueline (Ted) Crocker and Martina (Terry) Kelly, both of Fort Saskatchewan, Rosemary (Wayne) Brown, Newfoundland; brothers, Alex (Val), Labrador, Stanley 'Junior' (Doris) and Rick (Cheryl), both of Fort Saskatchewan and Boyd (Debbie), Sackville; sister-in-law, Vivian Cooper, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Alicia, Aulay, Emily, Kyle and a large circle of family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Stanley Sr. and a brother, Ray. Cremation has taken place at Gary's request. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 7, 2013 Gerard Purcell It is with sadness that the family of Gerard Jerome Purcell, 65, of Lunenburg announce his passing on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at home. Born in Harbour Grace, N.L., he was the son of the late Charles and Monica (Shugarue) Purcell. Gerard began scallop fishing at the young age of fourteen, serving aboard many vessels over the years. It was during the last few years of his time at sea that his role as ships cook was enjoyed by his crewmates, up until his health forced him to retire. Gerard was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who enjoyed playing his guitar, singing, and a good game of cards, especially poker. His cooking skills were appreciated by family and friends, especially his homemade breads and cakes. Gerard is survived by his wife Lucy, sons, Stephen; Lunenburg, Craig (Becky); Vogler’s Cove, sisters, Lorraine (Robert) Tanner; Lunenburg, Geraldine (Bryan) Meisner; Second Peninsula, brothers, Charlie and his companion Joan Crouse; Bridgewater. Gerard will also be missed by his grandchildren Jeffrey, Alexis and Brandon. Gerard is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three nieces. As Gerard wished there will be no funeral service with a private interment at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the V.O.N., The Lung Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
