The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, March 4, 2014 Ernest Arthur Barnes(March 30, 1926 - March 1, 2014) Barnes, Ernest Arthur, 87 of Waverley, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully at the VG site, QEII Hospital in Halifax, NS on March 1st, 2014, one month before his 88th birthday after a short battle with cancer. He is predeceased by his loving wife Mary Ann (miller). Born in St John’s, NL, on March 30, 1926, he was the son of the later Walter J. Barnes and Gladys (Peters) Barnes. Ernie started his career with Transport Canada in Goose Bay, Labrador, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was the local Sheriff above his mechanic duties with DOT. He later transferred to Waverley, NS to work at the Halifax airport (Stanfield International Airport) in 1959. He retired as the Airport Assistant Manager in 1982, after 37 years in the federal government. Upon his retirement a road which he had constructed on the airport was renamed “Barnes Drive”. He was very appreciative of his friends near his home in Waverley, and would always say he had excellent neighbors. His family was very special to him and he enjoyed all the family occasions, and travelling to the valley for hay with his son-in-law Peter. Over the years Ernie was very independent and active, and enjoyed driving his car on an almost daily basis. His car was very special to him until he lost his license two years ago. His is survived by sons Robert (Marta) of Branch LaHave, Donald (Carmie) of Dartmouth, daughter Judith Davidson (Peter) of Mount Uniacke, and step daughter Mildred Howell of Paradise, NL, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Daphne Conlin of Vancouver, BC, and brother Wallace Barnes of Manuels, NL. Funeral service will be held at a later time. A further announcement on details will follow. Burial will take place in Memorial Gardens, Sackville, NS. Special thank you to the doctors, nurses, care workers at the VG Hospital for their kindness and the excellent health care they provided. Rachel Emily Jane Barnes (March 3, 1929 - March 3, 2014) Rachel Emily Jane Barnes passed peacefully away during the early morning hours on March 3, 2014 at the Health Sciences Center after a lengthy illness and celebrating her 85th Birthday surrounded by her family. She is predeceased by her husband, our father, Amos (1978), son Lester (2005) and daughter Sandra Pittman (2006). She is survived by her children, Hilda Sheppard (Frank), Betty Ackerman (Edward), Roland (Deborah), Larry (Elizabeth) and Rosaline Ford (Wilfred). Son and daughter in law, Roland Pittman and Margaret Barnes. Sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Two brothers, Raymond (Helen) and Earl (Gertie) Rideout. Sisters in law, Nina West, Shirley Barnes, Gertie Barnes, and Jean Barnes. As well as many other relatives and friends. Mom had made many friends during her earthly journey and was well known and always ready to lend a helping and friendly hand. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Staff of 4 South A of the Health Sciences Center for helping to make Mom's last days comfortable. Appreciation is also being extended to the Staff of the Dialysis Units at both the Waterford and HSC who cared for Mom for the past 3 years. The family would also like to send a sincere appreciation and thanks to the Staff and Residents of Karwood Retirement Retreat where Mom called "home" for the past 3 years for the kindness and friendships that was shown to her. Born in Channel, Newfoundland on November 2, 1947, he was a son of the late Eli Augustus and Mary Rebecca (Anderson) Burridge. Stew was a fisherman and a member of the Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso. He was also a member of the Guysborough County Inshore Fisherman’s Association. He is survived by his daughter, Rosetta Burridge, Whistler, BC; sister, Joyce (Leo) Savoury, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL; brothers, Lloyd (Helen), Port–aux-Basque, NL; Robert (Shirley), Sydney; Norm (Hilda), London, ON; several nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Stew was predeceased by his wife, Geneva Martha (Bond) Burridge; brothers, Phil, George and Russell; sisters-in-law, Mildred Burridge and Doris Burridge.
