The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, June 27, 2016 Gordon Frederick Brenton(November 5, 1930 - June 25, 2016) It is with heavy hearts that we want to announce the passing of our wonderful father, husband, grand and great grandfather, uncle and friend. Gordon F. Brenton 85 years of age , born in Loon Bay, Hickmans Harbour NFLD Nov.5th 1930. He died at home in the loving care of his family. Gordon is survived by his beautiful wife of 65 years Marjorie Ellen (Marriott), five children Valerie husband John Hennigar, Gordon C. wife Mary Lou Brenton(Nunn), daughter Trudy Legere husband Jim Matheson, son Donald Wife Cindy Brenton and daughter Michelle Brenton. He has 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. His is survived by two lovely sisters Alice Walters in Victoria BC and Beatrice Hamilyn in Halifax NS. He is predeceased by his parents Charles and Maude (Eastman), daughter Edith NFLD, Anne BC, Clarice NFLD, brothers Wilfred NFLD, Melvin NFLD. Gordon was a loving father, and a lover of hunting and fishing all his life. He was a Power Engineer and had a varied career starting at a young age on sailing vessels, tankers and after becoming a Chief Engineer he worked for Nova Scotia Light and Power, Texaco, Mount Saint Vincent, Gulf Oil and Hantsport Pulp and Paper till retirement. He was a long-time member of Poyntz Lodge No. 44, A.F. & A.M. in Hantsport, serving as worshipful master of the lodge in 1996. He was a jack of all trades and a great putterer. His buddy for many years Cel Dicks joined him with his sons hunting and fishing and spent many hours at his camp near Alton NS. He will be in our hearts forever. Funeral arrangement are set for Thursday June 30th, 2016, 2 pm at the Avon United Church in Hantsport, Nova Scotia, Reverend Beth W. Johnson officiating. Donation to Canadian Cancer Society.
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, July 5, 2016 Susan Gail O'Brien(August 24, 1961 - July 4, 2016) O'Brien, Susan Gail, aged 54, Halifax, passed away at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, NS on July 4, 2016. Born in St. John's, NL, she was the daughter of Donald and Renée Ryan. Susan held a Master's degree in Psychology from the University of Guelph, and served in the Canadian Forces for over 20 years. She was highly involved in her children's activities, and she sought to create many memorable experiences in the lives of her friends and family. She is survived by her loving husband James, son Conor and daughter Maureen, her mother Renée and her brothers Ron, David, Rob and their families. She was predeceased by her father Donald. Susan will be remembered with much love by her family and her many cherished friends, colleagues, and neighbours. Susan was a gentle and remarkable person who used her considerable gifts in a spirit of kindness, generosity and fairness. A Memorial Service will be held today Thursday, July 7th, at 11 a.m. In Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Halifax. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, July 7, 2016 Mary Rita Moriarty(October 1, 1924 - July 6, 2016) MORIARTY, MARY RITA -Halifax- After many years of living with dementia, Mary felt God's gentle touch on her shoulder and heard the words, "Come Home". God's angels ushered her into heaven on July 6, 2016. Born in St. John’s, Nfld. October 1, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Bridget (nee Tobin ) Hayes . Mary moved to Nova Scotia as a young child, and spent the rest of her life residing in Halifax. Upon completion of a commercial training course she was employed at Industrial Machinery and the Chronicle before meeting and marrying her husband Jack, of 60 years. After raising their family, she returned to work at Dalhousie University retiring in 1989. Mary was an avid bowler into her early 80s, she enjoyed playing cards, socializing, the company of good friends and family gatherings. She leaves behind her three children, Colin (Carmel) Moriarty, Cathy (Glenn) Leiper and Paul (Lena) Moriarty, 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John B. Moriarty, her brother Gerald Hayes, sisters Kathleen MacDonald, and Rita Hayes (infancy). The family would like to extend thanks to the palliative team and nurses at the QE II Hospital and the many caregivers from Northwood who lovingly showed Mary care and compassion. A special thank you to Shirley Brunt, who did so much to enhance Mary’s quality of life, always doing so with tenderness, love and respect. Arrangements have been entrusted to Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen Street, Dartmouth, NS. Cremation has already taken place. There will be no visitation. A celebration of Mary’s life will take place at West End Baptist Church, 1986 Preston Street, in Halifax on July 11, 2016 at 2:00 pm. The Waterloo Region Record, Kitchener, Ontario, 25 Jun 2016, has an extensive article on young girls from Newfoundland finding employment in the textile mills in Hespeler, Ontario. The article features PANSY BELL from Bishop Falls. She was 16 when she left home. Many pictures are included. There is a local historian, Lary Turner, who is trying to identify who the women in the pictures are. According to the article, one in four people living in Cambridge in the 1970s had Newfoundland roots.
