Born in Rocky Harbour, NL, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Annie (Hillier) Parsons. Stella’s family arrived in Newfoundland in 1802 and received one of the original land grants from the King of England. Her father owned and operated the sawmill as well as the general store. They were also the first family in Rocky Harbour to have a radio which helped them share news of the world with their community. Stella graduated Memorial University in 1939, with a teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was at a one room schoolhouse in English Point, Labrador where she often travelled by dog sled.
