A short time ago, a message got through to the list that contained links for ads. It may have contained a virus. I'm not sure. Please don't click on the links. Just delete the message. I went into the administrator's tools and tried to block, delete or ban this address, but it was not a subscribed email address. I think I may have blocked it from another page, but I'm not sure. Along with Rootsweb's other issues for mailing lists, it seems others are popping up: allowing messages unfiltered from nonsubscribers. Please be more vigilant with the list than usual until Rootsweb has figure out and solved the problems with their system. Diane Tibert List Administrator

The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, August 11, 2016 Phyllis Pike Phyllis Rosabel (Ewing) Pike, of Ingramport, (formerly of St. John’s, Newfoundland) After a brief illness, our loving mother went home to eternal life on Aug.9, 2016. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on July 5, 1925, Phyllis was the daughter of Frank M. and Rosabel (Pynn) Ewing. Phyllis grew up in the family of the Anglican Church of St. Mary the Virgin and attended Bishop Spencer College where she was active in Girl Guides, basketball and field hockey. She was the goalie on the championship field hockey team of 1942. Her education at Bishop Spencer had a profound influence on her life and she often quoted the ideals of the school (and Headmistress Miss Cherrington) to her children. Phyllis often spoke of having an early breakfast, heading over to Bowring Park to play tennis and then cycling across the city to Bishop Spencer on Bond St.( Miss Cherrington liked active girls.). Mom entered Nursing School at the General Hospital in St. John’s and was valedictorian of the Class of 1946. She nursed in St. John’s and later completed a physiotherapy program in New York City which enabled her to nurse at the Children’s Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s. She left this post in 1965 as Acting Director of Nursing. Phyllis was predeceased by her loving first husband Frederick Thomas Davis. Phyllis and Fred, along with young Paul, spent a number of happy years managing the bungalows in Terra Nova National Park. During widowhood, the hand of God (and Rosabel Ewing) reintroduced her to an old family friend (and widower) the Rev. James Pike. They married and Phyllis moved to Nova Scotia where she and Jim blended their families and created a unified family with Paul and Valerie. They loved each other’s children unconditionally and created a strong family unit. Phyllis began the joyous journey of a busy clergy wife in the Anglican Parishes of Digby, Cornwallis (Port Williams) and Hubbards. Mom ran a welcoming rectory which was full of the most delicious food and baked goods. She was active in the ladies groups in all the churches of each parish and often led the Junior Auxiliary. Phyllis enjoyed hosting groups of parishioners and the friends of her children. Dad described his years with Phyllis as the happiest years of his life. Phyllis was a talented knitter and enjoyed knitting for family, friends and church groups. Mother’s love of nature made our home a haven for animals. There were always dogs and cats as well as hamsters, rabbits, fish and even an orphaned raccoon that loved her chocolate chip cookies, but overstayed his welcome by joining a clergy barbecue and accosting the guests. For one summer, a 4-H calf grazed contentedly on the lawns of the Port Williams rectory. In retirement, Phyllis and Jim enjoyed visiting and taking services in various local parishes. They took holiday trips to Florida and often went “home” to St. John’s. When Dad became ill, Phyllis retuned her nursing skills and nursed him at home. She then returned to St. John’s in order to nurse her mother during the last years of Rosabel’s life. Until recently, Phyllis was very active. She enjoyed packing a picnic and going on day trips to Provincial Parks around Nova Scotia. She attended her Spencer Reunion and her Nursing School Reunion. In 2015, the extended family gathered for her 90th birthday celebration which was a joyous occasion. Phyllis was predeceased by her husbands, Frederick Thomas Davis and the Rev. James Pike; by her parents Frank & Rosabel Ewing; sister-in-law Minnie Ewing and special Aunt Mae Gosse. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie of Ingramport; her son Paul (Lynda) of Cape Coral, Florida and their children Catherine & Philippe; her brother Millar Ewing of St. John’s and his children Geoffrey (Yvonne) Ewing, and Dr. Karen (Carol) Ewing; nephew Grayson Ewing & his mother Iris (Ches) Petten, Scott Ewing, Kate and Rachel ; cousins, the Rev Trudy Gosse, Mac (Shirley) Butt, Ruth Thomas and Elaine Dunphy all of St. John’s. Phyllis will be especially missed by Marta the Schnauzer and Billy the Cat. Please join us to celebrate Mom’s life at St. Nicholas Anglican Church, 29 Westwood Blvd., Upper Tantallon on Saturday, Aug. 13th at 2 pm. The service will be celebrated by the Rev. Tammy Hodge & the Rev. Lynda Downing. A reception will follow the service. Private interment will be held at a later date. I am the resurrection and the life said the Lord. Whosoever lives and believes in me shall never perish, but have eternal life.

Psalm 107: Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. They, too, observed the Lord’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas. He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them
