The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, November 2, 2016 Anthony Arthur "Tony" Perry(1959-2016) Perry, Anthony Arthur "Tony", 57, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL, formerly of Antigonish, NS. It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Inspector Anthony Arthur "Tony" Perry. Known to some as a neighbour, others as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, he was first and foremost a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Born on the West Coast of Newfoundland in 1959, Tony spent his childhood enjoying the outdoors and building the skills that would define him as a handyman and "jack of all trades." After graduating from high school, he completed a diploma in cabinetmaking and worked construction on several major projects across Newfoundland. In 1988, Tony was accepted to the RCMP and began his almost 30 year career as a Police Officer. As he made his way through the ranks, Tony was an icon in the communities where he lived. He sat on committees, volunteered with sporting organizations and offered a helping hand to others in any way he could. Tony loved to travel, and he and his high school sweetheart Heather made beautiful memories touring the world. From Times Square to Stonehenge to his favourite beach in St. Marten, Tony could strike up a conversation and make a friend wherever he went. Tony was a known "fixer" who helped to peacefully resolve countless conflicts, such as the armed standoff he negotiated for which he was presented the Commanding Officer's Award of Excellence. From 1988 to 2003, Tony served as a constable on all Units at Antigonish Detachment as well as in the Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit. In 2003, he was promoted to Corporal and served as the Detachment Commander in Inverness. He returned to Antigonish in 2006 as a Sergeant in the role of Operational Non-Commissioned Officer. In 2008 he was promoted again to Staff Sergeant and held the positions of District Commander for Antigonish and the District Advisory Non-Commissioned Officer. In August of 2015, Tony achieved the goal he set for himself in 1988 and joined the Commissioned Ranks of the RCMP as the Inspector for Labrador District, posted in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL. He was truly a dedicated police officer who thrived in his uniform and maintained the rights and safety of the people and communities he served. Tony was so proud of his daughters, who were driven by his encouragement and "Poppy" was idolized by his grandchildren. Tony is survived by his loving wife Heather and daughters Melanie (Jason) Marchand and Melissa (Tom) Halford, as well as three "main men" and one "princess" - his precious grandchildren Ben and Luke Marchand and Violet and Douglas Halford. He is also survived by his mother, Marjorie Laing, brother William (Rose), sisters Linda (Cecil) Byrne, Jean Bursey, brothers-in-law Alec (Terri) and Bill (Judy) Murdoch, sisters-in-law Diane Murdoch and Allison (Grant) Peyton, special aunt and uncle Bern and Sandra Adey and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Garfield and parents-in-law Jack and Lillian Murdoch. Visitation will be held Thursday from 7-9pm and Friday 2-4pm and 7-9pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St. Antigonish. A United Church Funeral Service will be hosted in St. Ninian Cathedral on Saturday at 1:00pm, Reverend Peter Smith presiding. Burial at a later date. He was our leader, our teacher, and our anchor. May he sleep peacefully. Donations can be made in his honour to the "B" Div. Fallen Members Fund. Online condolences: www.clcurry.com
