Halifax, January 27, 2017 Philip Brown(April 15, 1921 - January 23, 2017) BROWN, Philip Harold - With much sadness, we announce the passing of Philip Harold Brown (PH) in Brantford, Ontario on Monday, January 23, 2017. Phil was born in Bonavista, Newfoundland on April 15, 1921, the son of Harold and Minnie Brown. He had many stories of growing up in Bonavista with his sisters, Millicent (Mrs. Ralph Russell) and Evelyn (Mrs. Paul Fundarek, deceased). Although he lived in Halifax for most of his life, Phil was first and foremost a “Newfie” from “God’s Country”. During the war, Phil served in the Royal Air Force and while in Halifax, he met Mary (nee Mary Rozee), his wife of 73 years. They lived happily in Halifax with their children, Heather (Mrs. Ken Spriggs, Ancaster, Ontario) and Sandy (Mrs. Ron Wellings, Simcoe, Ontario). Phil will be deeply missed by his family. He was a great Dad, always ready to do whatever or taxi wherever. His grandchildren, Kelly Spriggs (Ancaster, Ontario), Anne McLauchlin (Brantford, Ontario), Heather (Mrs. Steve Dambrosi, Tampa, Florida) and Alison (Mrs. Hugo Espinosa, Columbia, South Carolina) and great grandchildren, Meagan and Kaitlin McLauchlin (Brantford, Ontario) have many fond memories of times spent with Grampy, his many stories and jokes. Phil worked with the Prudential Insurance Company for over 30 years where he met and made many friends along the way. He always seemed to meet someone wherever he was and loved to stop and chat. An avid fisherman, Phil loved his yearly trip to Newfoundland. Although he enjoyed many fishing spots in Nova Scotia, the trout in Trinity Pond were always the “pinkest” and the best. Phil and Mary moved to Brantford, Ontario in 2012 to be closer to family. Funeral arrangements are through Dodsworth and Brown Funeral Home, Ancaster, Ontario. It is with very heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Hubert Osbourne of Shad Bay, on January 25th, 2017. Hubert was born on February 29th, 1932, to the late Betsy (Newhook) and Silas Osbourne in Trinity, Newfoundland. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family which included 18 brothers and sisters. He leaves behind the love of his life Ruth (Pittman) after 62 years of marriage, daughter Linda (Wayne) Joyce, Shad Bay; and sons, Ken (Susan) Osbourne, Brookside; Gary (Darlene) Osbourne, Mount Uniacke; grandchildren Gary (Heather) Joyce, Neil (Patricia) Joyce, Haley (Burke Reed) Osbourne, Nick (Heather McFadgen) Osbourne, Chris (Lindsey) Tomes and six great grandchildren; Arleigh and Sam Joyce, Lettie and Oliver Joyce, Jack and William Tomes. Hubert’s love of and pride in his family, knew no limits. He was always eager to be a part of everything they were involved in and their loudest cheerleader. His true legacy lives on in them. Hubert was a founding member of St. Timothy’s Anglican Church in Hatchet Lake where he served for many years filling various roles including warden, greeter, altar guild, property committee, working tirelessly at all church functions giving generously of his time, talents and treasures. Being a leap year baby was the first sign of the special person Hubert would become. An outgoing, gregarious man, his quick wit, sense of humour, and love of life endeared him to young and old alike. He loved people and having fun, camping, canoeing, never passing up a game of cards, darts, horseshoes or washer toss. His grandchildren, nieces and nephews were always willing to take him on. He was blessed with the gift of conversation. To Hubert, a stranger was only someone he hadn’t chatted up yet as he sat on many “perches” eager to hear your story and make a new friend. A proud Newfoundlander, at the hint of a Newfie accent his first question would be “What part of home are you from?” Hubert was a craftsman working for fifty plus years as a plasterer adding and restoring beauty to many churches, historic buildings and homes in the Halifax area and beyond. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Harris Crooks his family doctor, the Palliative Care team, especially nurse Cindy Bell, the VON and care workers from Northwood. Thank you also to all those who have been holding Hubert and his family in their prayers since he was first diagnosed with cancer. A celebration of Hubert’s life will be held at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, Hatchet Lake on Tuesday, January 31st at 2 pm with Rev. Kay Knott and Rev. Cheryl Rafuse, with a reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Timothy’s Church or a charity of your choice. “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, January 25, 2017 Matilda "Annie" Billard - January 22, 2017 BILLARD (Williams), Matilda “Annie” - 82, Halifax, passed away Sunday January 22, 2017 in the QEII Health Sciences Halifax Infirmary Site. Born in Burnt Island, Newfoundland, she was a daughter of the late Jobe and Susanna (Smurridge) Thorne. Annie moved to Halifax as a teenager to make a better life for herself. Her family eventually joined her, settling down and raising their families in Timberlea. She worked for twenty years at the Moirs Box Factory. She and Art spent the best years of their lives camping at the Rawdon Gold Mines Campgrounds with Cyril and Marie and their friends. Annie happily lived the last years of her life as a member of the Parkland Clayton Park retirement community. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. She is survived by sons, Keith (Karen) Williams, Cole Harbour; Henry (Anne) Williams, Lower Sackville; sisters, Marie Griffen; Elizabeth Robia, both of Timberlea; brother, Henry (Patsy) Thorne, Halifax; grandchildren, Joey (Rebecca) Williams, Cole Harbour; Jeffrey (Jennifer) Williams, Cole Harbour; Tara Lee Williams, Lower Sackville; great-grandchildren, Brayden; Georgia; Tucker; Elijah; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Billard; brothers-in-law Cyril Griffen, Amos Robia. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cole Harbour Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, January 26, 2017 in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Timberlea. Interment in church cemetery. Reception to follow in church hall. The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, January 24, 2017 Annie Sarah Surette Annie Sarah Surette, 91, of Halifax passed away January 21, 2017 at the V.G. Hospital. Born in Harbour Breton, NFLD, she was a daughter of Capt. Henry and Ellen (Piercey) Hynes. Annie dedicated her life to her home and her family always came first. She loved frequent family get togethers. Annie looked forward to going to Seniors Club to spend time with her many friends. She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother and a good friend to many. She will be missed by all. Survived by son, Dennis (Geraldine), Hammonds Plains; daughters, Margaret (Mick) Nash, Denise Surette, both of Bedford, Joan (Brian) MacLeod, Halifax; daughter-in-law, Rose Surette, Bedford; sisters, Theresa, Susie and Margaret; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents; husband, Joseph Elie; son, Kevin Clarence; brothers, Sandy, Henry, Steve, Hughie, Clarence and Joe; sisters, Dot, Betty, Mary, Ellie and infant sister. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 10:30am in Saint Benedict Parish, 45 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations in Annie’s memory may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada. Born in Heart's Content, NL, she was the last living member of her family. She was predeceased by her daughter Edna, first husband Harold Legge and second husband Raymond LeGrow. Left to mourn are her son, Douglas (Daphne), Dartmouth, NS; step-daughter, Joan LeDrew (Rex), St. John's, NL; granddaughters, Heather (Keith) Moore, Rothesay, NB, Penny (Peter) Flewwelling, Dartmouth, NS, and Susan (Jason) MacLeod, Barrie, ON; along with great-granddaughters, Amy and Erin Moore, Allison and Nicole Flewwelling, and Jessica, Ashlee and Hailee MacLeod.
