    3. Transcribed from newspaper issue Vol XXXVII No 24 price 3 cents...."We have all been rather severe on the United States in the past for her want of action against the barbarities of the Huns, but we must now confess that she stands as an object lesson to us all in Patriotism. While her President strove for neutrality, for peace in spite of insult her people upheld him. We were misled. We, none of us understood the magnificient unity of that wonderful country. War came at last, inspite of Wilson's attempts to forbear; and with war came the Selective Draft or General Conscription--call it what you will. It is true that America had the experience and mistakes of Great Britain and France to draw on, but the sight of ten million Americans marching to enrolling offices to register, without the slightest disturbance is a magnificent lesson to the world. Hats off to America; though coming late she comes absolutely united. What a comentary on the miserable state of affairs in Canada and Newfoundland. There will be no coalition in Canada after all, and though there may be an election, it is a foregone conclusion that Borden will be returned, because the country looks for help not opposition from the Opposition Party at this time. Laurier has finally refused to work with the Borden government, chiefly --so report says--over the question of Conscription. It may be however that that alone is the only reason, but whatever it be Borden's hand is strengthened thereby. Both in Canada and Newfoundland the Party in power has asked that the Party out of power join with them till the end of the war in managing the many puzzling details which arise from a state of war. True? It may be late in the day; true it ought to have been done in 1914, but that does not excuse the Opposition in either Canada or Newfoundland from refusing to help to share the burden, and continuing in mere Opposition. America, England, Australia, New Zeland are giving us magnificent example of how to do things in wartime. To Canada and Newfoundland, alas, must remain the sole honor of continuing peace practises in war time. It is self seeking interest that is at the bottom of it. I fear our politicians have not yet learned to focus their eyes Overseas where "Kultur" still strives so hard for mastery, *********************************** WEBSTER 1977...KULTUR = 1: CULTURE 2: culture emphasizing practical efficiency and individual subordination to the state. 3: German culture held to be superior esp. by militant Nazi and Hohenzollern expansionists. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
