Hi Everyone; Since we at least try, some of us, here in Newfoundland to carry on with our Ancestors tradition of "Mummering" just a few of us including myself. My husband is not origionally from Newfoundland but wanted very much to find out what and why I would dress up quite stupid looking for a couple of nights during the Christmas Holidays<smiles> so I asked him to tag along with my friends and I last evening. We visited approx. 10 homes and received an hearty and exciting welcome. They served all types of Brew{home-made} and other spirits and wine etc. I did not drink and was a designated Driver and also watched carefully from gleeful eyes. I did enjoy a glass of old fashioned cherry flavoured syrup and the usual old fashioned chunk of fruit cake in which I hated when I went mummering as a child. This time however it tasted good, maybe because of the sweet memories of my childhood. I was asked to play the squeeze Box {Accordian} and didn't hesitate, although I cannot play a tune on that box <grin> but it seemed as nobody noticed that this squeeze box was way out of tune and danced across the floor. I found myself thinking "I must be playing this thing to the right tune" but later I did request a "Harmonica" in which I can play quite well, or at least I think so. My husband only remembers going into one home and needless to write that he could not remember coming into our home <smiles>so yes the moral of this story is that some of us still carry on with our Ancestor's Christmas traditions. Who knows? some mummers just may tap on your door tonight and you will hear them say... "Any Mummers lowed in?" so if you live in a safe town, allow them to come in and you will not be sorry if you want fun. Merry Christmas Everyone! Evelyn
