My contemporary, still married, Irish friend told me just yesterday that it was not until after his marriage in 1969 that he learned his wife, also born in Ireland, had been taught Irish history from an entirely different textbook and slant then he had experienced. Catherine was tickled to read an account of the 1704 law about horses valued over five pounds sterling. More than 250 years later her father had used that excuse to tell her why she could not own a horse, as a teenager.
