    3. Recently I reviewed the 1997, five part, CBC Video Series titled "East of Canada, the Story of Newfoundland". The parts are named: I...Voyage to the Happy Island; John Cabot's discovery of NL provided a new life to those who came after him, but it led to a slow death for those who had lived here before he arrived. 49 min. II..Outport; Why the outport developed, how it endured, and why it declined. 49 min. III..Nation or Notion? Newfoundlanders have their own way of looking at the world. Does a separate nation still linger in the hearts of Newfoundlanders? 49 min. IV...Canadian Connections; A look at the sometimes-distant and often fractious relationship between Newfoundland and Canada. 49 min. V....Joey's Spade; The impact of industrialization on the lives of Newfoundlanders. 49 min. 1832...The Cause Celeb was the Landrigan Case for Military Justice to replace Civilian Justice.....after much badgering of the British, NL is granted Self Government. 1832..."Outport representatives in the new government were all St. John's merchants"....."unlike the US, NL school children were not taught to know their heros" ....quotes by Paul O'Neil, referring to the Nation's founders. 1836...out of a population of about 30,000, one half were Irish....message to the British Gov't..."The Irish have arrived, now deal with them....one goal was to establish a Catholic Middle Class." 1855-1933...78 years of Responsible Government, or 'Home Rule'....First NL Prime Minister was Mr. Little who was the lawyer of Bishop Flemming, who is credited with building the RC Cathederal, at that time the largest place of worship in North America. NL representatives Carter and Shea endorsed confederation but the people rejected the idea, by a vote in 1869. Eighty years later in 1949 NL joined CA under the same terms that were negotiated in 1869. 1869...76 yr. old Charles Fox Bennett led the anti-confederate cause. Liberals won the day, 21 seats to 9 in the NL House of Assembly. 1881....Newfoundland Railway building agreement was based on the Canadian model for the CPR. 1891...Sir Robert Bond, PM of NL, negotated a 'Free Trade' deal with the US. Canada PM MacDonald used his influence in Britian to scuttle this deal. 1894....NL Bank Crash....within Days the Canadian Banks had established a presence in St. John's. 1929-1932....Depression...Bill Coady of St. John's said " father was a blacksmith...the people blamed the government....there was no national pride, some people would rather burn the place, they couldn't care less." Milley Johnson of Catalina said "Townies, ran the country on the rocks, that was the kind of country we had, they kept you barefoot and ignorant." Merchants favored Commision of Gov't and the people did not have a voting choice in this matter. Only Nation in history to give up the right to vote. 1933....NL Constitution suspended by Britain 1936...Canadian Immigration Minister opposed immigration of Newfoundlanders to Canada.
