Excuse my ignorance, but where are you (in the world)? I am in New Zealand. As far as I know Capt. John Mercer (my great grandfather) married Amy Patterson (daughter of the infamous J.J. Patterson) of Manaia, South Taranaki. They had my grandfather in Wanganui, also named John Mercer who became a teacher. He was a wonderful man. He had three children, one of whom is my father, Hugh.
