Hi Lists -- I'm thinking of goint to Newfoundland this summer. I would be traveling by car to Nova Scotia and then the ferry to the St John's area. I'd like to do some research at the Rooms and then go to Harbour Grace and Mosquitto Cove where my CRANE ancestors lived. Any suggestions for a woman traveling alone as to places to stay, etc would be most appreciated. Thanks, Maureen Taylor
Where are you leaving from? If you are leaving from Guysborough, you can drive to the boat.... once off the boat you are only 1.5 hours from St. John's..... so for that leg of the trip, you won't need to stay anywhere I'm thinking. Which Mosquito cove are you going to? I think there is one on the Burin Peninsula and one on the west coast..... -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected]; [email protected] Sent: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 10:55 AM Subject: [NFLD-LAB] trip to Newfoundland Hi Lists -- I'm thinking of goint to Newfoundland this summer. Hi Maureen. There are two routes to NF by ferry, both are from Sidney, Nova Scotia. There is a short 5-6 hour trip to Port aux Basques, located on the SW corner of the province and a 17-18 hour trip that goes along the south coast to Argentia. From Port aux Basques you have about an 11-12 hour drive across the island to St John's, from Argentia it's 1 1/2 hours to St John's. I would suggest if you have the time that you enter via Port aux Basques, take your time on the trip across the island (visit a few communities along the way) and leave via Argentia unless you want to drive over the same road (there is only one route across the province) to leave. There are many great B&B's located all the way across the province but if you are into hotels/motels the major ones are mostly located in Corner Brook, Grand Falls, Gander Clarenville. When you get to St John's there are a number of very good B&B's close to the Rooms as well as most of the major hotels you would find in any mid size Canadian city. I would tend to stay somewhere in the downtown area of the city. Harbour Grace and Mosquito are located in Conception Bay about 1 hours drive from St John's. I would suggest that you take the Conception Bay highway (along the coast and thru many communities) at least in one direction and if you are in a hurry return via the Trans Canada Highway. By the way, the community known as Mosquito is located between Harbour Grace and Carbonear, and is now called Bristol's Hope. This area of the province is a beautiful place to spend a day to two and if you decide to stay in the area, might I suggest you try Keneally Manor, it is one of the oldest remaining homes in Carbonear but well restored. Here is one of the websites http://www.bbcanada.com/9478.html you can look at, there are others. Enjoy your trip and if you stop into one of the over 30 Tim Horton's in St John's you may see me. :-) Ed Barbour ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maureen Taylor" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2007 12:25 PM Subject: [NFLD-LAB] trip to Newfoundland > Hi Lists -- > > I'm thinking of goint to Newfoundland this summer.
