My research is on the Shea family of Pouch Cove and St Johns. I have two references to Squires in my data. A Mary Squires sponsors Patrick Shea in 1808 in St Johns. Feb 14,1808 Patk to John SHEA & Elinor WALSH Sponsors: John DAVIS & Mary SQUIRES John had a brother Joseph who lived in Pouch Cove. Joseph's first wife Rosanna Grishey died around 1815. Co-incidentally Rosanna was originally from Broad Cove present day St Phillips. After Rosanna died Joseph remarried to a woman named Squires. The data needs a bit of deconstructing. The actual records for their children and their marriage are as follows: Mar 11,1817 Margaret to Joseph SHEA & Elizabeth SQUIRES Sponsors: James SHEA & Joanna RORKE The following day they married Mar 12,1817 Joseph SHEA (Pouch Cove) m Elizabeth COX (Pouch Cove) No witnesses only the priest Fr Alexdr Fitzgerald. The possible confusion about Elizabeth's surnames can be explained. Elizabeth was the "Widow Squires" at the time of the baptism of Margaret. The following day when she married Joseph she used her maiden name, Cox. After she married she continued to use her maiden name on the baptismal certificates of her children: Aug 12,1819 James to Joseph SHEA & Elizabeth COX Sponsors: James KEHOE & Anne GREEN Elizabeth Cox was a Protestant woman previously married to William Squires in Pouch Cove. William died. As a Protestant she was obliged to convert to Catholicism in order to have her daughter Margaret baptised and to marry Joseph. The same pattern existed in Joseph's first marriage to the Protestant Rosanna Grishey. Elizabeth Cox was possibly born in 1782 in Torbay & married James Squires in 1798. Amongst their children they had a son named William who was born in 1813. These records are all contained on one of the Newfoundland websites. I cannot locate the originals in my own records. The William Squires data is on one of these excellent websites: http://ngb.chebucto.org/ Or http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cannf/index.html
