Hi again thanks to all who replied to my request a few days ago where I asked ...... >>> I am new to this list and hope a kind soul with some marine history knowledge can help please. I have seen only one report ( Edinburgh Advertiser 17 Nov 1775) which actually lists some of the ships which went down in this disaster. I am interested in the ship "Henry and Honora" listed there which went down with all hands and shows master simply as "Brooks". Does anyone have more info please on this ship in particular eg size, where built, home port etc and the full name of the master?>>> As you know, the source for the report was http://ngb.chebucto.org/Articles/hurricane-1775.shtml. I have gone through most British newspapers for the period and indeed the "letter from Totnes 11 Nov 1775" is repeated in three different English newspapers in Nov 1775 in addition to the Edinburgh Advertiser. However imagine my surprise when, after several hours of searching, I got to the Daily Advertiser ( London) 21 Nov 1776 where it reports..."the following ships from Newfoundland are arrived at Waterford " and it then names 10 ships, one of which is the Henry and Honora, Brooks. In other words my ship of interest did not go down in the storm a year before. Doubtless there were good reasons for the initial reports but I wonder how many other ships named as lost actually did survive and get back to England or Ireland. Why there was a delay of a year I do not know but it could well be the Henry and Honora had to be repaired and waited until the next summer. Why all 10 ships arrived together from NFDL I dont know either but with things hotting up in the American colony in summer 1776 maybe they felt they should return in convoy? Just thought I would pass on this small cautionary tale, thanks again and regards to all. _________________________________________________________________ View photos of singles in your area!
