When I was very young my mother a I would visit them in Providence RI. I will try to find them in the Census In RI to see what comes up. Wow - great responses - I guess we all just need to be reminded that there are a number of folks researching Newfoundland families and get a wake-up call every so often. When I sent the suggestion two days ago I did not think there would be much of a response, but so far I have seen over 100 emails to the roll call! (Hopefully this one gets added as well.) I live in the USA and am researching the following families who for the most part were/are located in the BONAVISTA SOUTH REGION: AYLWARD. DOOLEY, FURLONG, KEOUGH, MURPHY, O'DRISCOLL (sometimes DRISCOLL), TRACEY & WALSH. The areas I am mainly interested in are: OPEN HALL, PLATE COVE EAST and PLATE COVE WEST. My KEOUGH (Andrew) ancestor was born (we think but have not proven) in County Carlow, IRELAND in 1784 arrived approximately 1816 and was in KING'S COVE and OPEN HALL before settling in PLATE COVE EAST. He was married to a Catherine AYLWARD and they had several children (nine that I am aware of) who married into the following families: DOOLEY, (O') DRISCOLL HOGAN, WALSH, RYAN, TRACEY,WALSH and WHELAN. I have corresponded with a few other researchers that I found on this site and the GrandBanks' website and their time and assistance have been invaluable - Vince Hunter, Jeri Keough and Don Tate are stand-outs. I would mention the GrandBanks' website for excellent transcribed information for Newfoundland (most of you are probably light years ahead of me with time and results for research but I thought I would mention what is helpful and perhaps on the next roll call of sorts we could suggest/share finding aids, websites we like to use, ideas for research, items we have researched and have information for and would be willing to share even if it does not relate directly to our own families, etc.) In that spirit and I might kick myself later for putting this out there, I was in SLC at the FHL recently and I copied off the registers for birth, marriage, and death records as they relate to Roman Catholics in the BONVISTA REGION - specifically: BROAD COVE, KING'S COVE, KNIGHT'S COVE, OPEN HALL, PLATE COVE EAST, PLATE COVE WEST, & STOCK COVE. I realize that there is a lot of index information relating to some of these records at the GrandBanks website but I tried to be systematic in going through the microfilm reels to capture the recorded information (which I plan to plow through when I got home). In February I will post on this site the books, years applicable and types of information contained in the registers or records for the information I copied and if it is something you might be interested in or need look ups (within reason) we can share. Hoping to hear from others researching my families or related families in PLATE COVE EAST and PLATE COVE WEST and related areas and thanks to any of you who have posted at this site or the GrandBanks' website who have assisted me with my research. Teresa

My family interests are mainly in Newfoundland, Trinity Bay, mostly. My great grandfather (more greats than I can figure right now) died in Scilly Cove (now called Winterton) in 1790 about 86 years old. His name was Jasper Hiscock and I believe he came from the area of Christchurch. We do have a Hiscock family baptized in Christchurch and moved to Newfoundland, but unfortunately not Jasper. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. If any of the Clark family, or any other families that settled in Newfoundland, I am most willing to share info. The early records in Newfoundland were scarce and poorly recorded, so a lot of my info and other researchers is based on family oral history and subsequent records. There were several fires that also destroyed any records that were saved. Thank you Elizabeth Ingham (formerly Hiscock) Researching all the families of Winterton, Newfoundland

Frank I echo your thoughts and thanks. I can't remember just how long I've been on this list - I do know I am experiencing the 3rd? or maybe even 4th "administrator" of this list. This list is unique in so much as everyone posts whatever information pertinent to the list as may be of even the slightest help to others. Not only that, but we share customs, beliefs, food staples and whatever else remotely connected to Newfoundland, Newfoundlanders and their way of life - be it past or present. I have to admit that when I log on at the end of a long day of work, this list is the first of my e-mails I read, in the remote chance that my "criminal - always changing the spelling of their last name" ancestors may pop up on my screen. The other lists I'm on just do not seem to be as active as this one. The RAG tidbits, obits, and other stats are just waiting there for us and others to peruse and connect. Just a wee word of advice to others that may be new to the list - or even those of us who have been here awhile, check the archives, as there may be info there that wasn't relevant to us at the time of posting, but as time and our research has progressed the information may fit with something which we may be missing or just may now fit into our research. I know I re-read many of the posts as my list of ancestors and connections grows. Again - a HEARTFELT those to all who take the time and effort to post to this list - it is GREATLY appreciated.
