    1. [NFLD-LAB] TIDBIT OF INFO. ST.JOHN'S REGATTA
    2. Evelyn
    3. From: "Evelyn" ewoudenberg@roadrunner.nf.net To: NFLD-LAB-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2003 1:13 PM Subject: TIDBIT OF INFO. ST.JOHN'S REGATTA Tidbit of info. about one of our Province's Holidays "Regatta Day" opening Ceremonies. It's a very fun time every year, as well the famous "George St." Festival. The City of St.John's is the place to visit at this time of the year. Local music and music Bands from across Canada and the US will continue to play each day and night until the early morning hours. Games of chance throughout the day with celebrations throughout the evening hours with fire-works lightening the skies of the entire City. I certainly will be sitting on top of "Signal Hill " tonight viewing in awe of the wonderful sights and sounds of our great Capital of our Province, St.John's, the oldest City in North America. I wish all of the Listers could join us. So much a part of our heritage that will linguer on through the years to our gggggchildren. Take care Cheers Evelyn Green Light for the Regatta. It's green and go for the 185th running of the Royal St. John's Regatta. The announcement came from the regatta committee, live on VOCM this morning. More than one hundred crews will take to the pond today, and VOCM will have stroke-by-stroke coverage of all the races. Regatta Committee President Keith Renouf says there are also some 200 concessions spread around Quidi Vidi Lake. Motorists won't be able to park on number of roads near Quidi Vidi Lake today because of the regatta. Sections of at least 15 streets will be designated as "tow away zones", including the Boulevard, Legion Road and parts of Circular Road. Members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary will be on hand lakeside to ensure everything runs smoothly. RNC Staff Sergeant June Layden indicates liquor-related violations won't be tolerated. Layden is also advising people to keep a close eye on their children, and leave their pets at home. Federal Opposition Leader Stephen Harper continues his visit to the province today with a trip to the regatta. He'll present medals and the trophy to winners of the female district race, tour the regatta course in a chase boat and visit the booths around the lake. He'll then have lunch with the regatta committee and invited guests. Visitors from all over the province and the world take in the annual regatta Regatta Day Operations The Canadian Red Cross will continue its' own tradition at the Royal St. John's Regatta today with 'Operation Lost and Found.' Acting Regional Director Al Pelley says this year they will have two checkpoints, a vehicle at the top of the pond and a Red Cross tent behind the marquis. Pelley says volunteers will be circulating throughout the crowd with hand-held radios provided by the Avalon Amateur Radio Club. He says the Red Cross is encouraging parents to show both checkpoint to their children so they'll know where to go if they get lost. The Nurses Union will provide its annual rest and refreshment stop for seniors at the regatta. It will be located at the head of Quidi Vidi Lake and will provide seniors with a place to rest and enjoy refreshments while watching the races. President Debbie Forward says the nurses and volunteers look forward to providing the service. The City of St. John's water education program is participating in the regatta day celebrations. Proceeds from their booth will be donated to the group 'Water for People' an international, non-profit development organization. They are committed to the long-term impact of increased access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation and health. The annual New World Fitness 'Kids of Steel' is on at Bowring Park today. It's described as a wonderful opportunity for children ages seven to sixteen to be introduced to triathalon. Meantime, the 19th annual New World Fitness Triathlon takes place Sunday at the Sunshine Rotary Park. There are two new events this year, a duathlon, which involves a run-bike-run component, and the corporate challenge. Musical Ride Travels to Deer Lake: The public is invited to have a look at some of the horses taking part in the RCMP Musical Ride tomorrow August 06, 2003 in Deer Lake. Sgt. Bruce Whillins says the stables at the Hodder Memorial Stadium will be open to the public at 2:30PM. The RCMP Musical Ride takes place tomorrow night at 7 at the Bowater Field.

    1. Re: [NFLD-LAB] Margarine vs. Butter
    2. Well, I was raised with Margarine... Mom's Margarine in a brick when I was younger. I thoroughly enjoyed your historic mention of it all also Matt, thanks. Dad did like Butter though and he had butter where we had margarine. Now, looking back, mom made Butter Icing for Cakes and used Margarine :o) Butter was saved for company that came, such as Gramma or Grampa from Newfie or other relatives. As for canned Milk, Carnation Canned Evaporated Milk is great with coffee or tea and still common amongst some of my friends. When I was growing up, we would use Canned Milk over Jello or Rice Pudding with Raisins that mom made and we also diluted it if we ran out of powdered milk for our cereal. I still love it and when I had my daughter, Carnation came out with Carnation Good Start formula and that was the best in my eyes. Thanks for starting an interesting topic as always Matt, Lori-Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matt Mullaly" <2matt@rogers.com> To: <NFLD-LAB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 5:33 PM Subject: [NFLD-LAB] Margarine vs. Butter > While it may be difficult for non-residents to believe, many Newfoundlanders > PREFER margarine to butter. 1. [NFLD-LAB] Margarine vs. Butter
    2. Matt Mullaly
    3. While it may be difficult for non-residents to believe, many Newfoundlanders PREFER margarine to butter. Me too. Matt A piece of history 8/5/03 By Richard Foot, CanWest News Service —Halifax When food giant Unilever Canada spread word last month it was shutting down its St. John’s margarine plant, only a solitary sentence in its announcement hinted that the closure will bring an end to a historic Newfoundland icon, with its own special place in Canada’s Constitution. “Established in 1925 as the Newfoundland Butter Company by the Crosbie family,” Unilever said, “the St. John’s margarine facility was purchased by Unilever in 1937.” It turns out Newfoundland was built on more fodder than fish. The Newfoundland Butter Co. — which never once made butter — became not only an economic force in St. John’s but also Canada’s original margarine maker when the province joined Confederation in 1949. At the time margarine was outlawed across most of North America to protect the continental dairy industry. But in Newfoundland, where dairy farms were scarce, people had been eating and enjoying margarine since the 19th century. When Canada and Newfoundland began working out the colony’s entry into Confederation, negotiations bogged down for a while over whether the St. John’s margarine factory would be exempt from Canadian dairy rules. The result was a special clause in the Terms of Union — Newfoundland’s constitutional rights and obligations in Canada — allowing “oleomargarine” as it was then called, to be manufactured in the province, but forbidding its export beyond. “There’s a nostalgia for this company among Newfoundlanders,” says Roger Crosbie, a former company president. “It’s been a respected and recognized part of the fabric of Newfoundland for a long, long time. I hate to see it go.” Crosbie and his better-known cousin John, the former federal Tory cabinet minister, are members of a family dynasty with deep business roots in Newfoundland, dating back to their grandfather, Sir John Crosbie. Sir John was a successful fish exporter, sending ships around the world carrying, among other things, cargos of seal and whale oil to margarine manufacturers in Europe. It was there in 1870 that Frenchman Hippolyte Mege-Mouries created margarine. Responding to a challenge from Emperor Louis Napoleon III for a substitute to butter, Mege-Mouries made margarine out of margaric acid — so called because the acid’s lustrous oil drops looked like pearls, known in Greek as margarites. Margarine turned out to be the perfect condiment for Newfoundland. The colony was poor in dairy cattle but rich in seal and whale oil, which were key ingredients in the making of early margarine. Two Newfoundland companies were producing local margarine by the late 1800s, but none lasted as long as the oddly-named Newfoundland Butter Company, founded by Sir John in 1925. Sir John bartered margarine for fish in Newfoundland’s outports until he died in 1932. Five years later the Butter Co. was bought by Unilever, but the Crosbies continued to manage the firm until Roger Crosbie stepped down as president in 1999. Curious Newfoundlanders came from far and wide to gape at the amazing sign. During the Second World War, however, authorities ordered the lights turned off as part of war-time blackout rules, and the cow was taken down. In 1949 the business earned its special status in the Terms of Union, and soon after changed its name to the Newfoundland Margarine Co. — although Crosbie says Newfoundlanders continued to call margarine butter. Canada now had its first margarine maker, a lucrative business with more than 150 workers. And although St. John’s margarine couldn’t be exported to other provinces, it wasn’t long after Newfoundland joined Canada that the national dairy rules were changed and Unilever began making margarine in the rest of the country. The international food giant now says the St. John’s plant and its 17 workers are too small a concern to be maintained in a world of large-scale, centralized manufacturing. After making margarine for almost eight decades, and introducing the product into Canada, Newfoundland will now get its margarine shipped out from Unilever plants in Ontario. “Everybody hates to see our old companies disappear,” says Crosbie, “but time marches on.”

    1. [NFLD-LAB] Post-1901 Census: MORE ATIs Needed -- We All Want the 1911 Census!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Access to Information forms reports to both National Archives and Statistics Canada has slowed down -- summer-time??? Some have already been rejected, have sent a complaint letter to the Information Commissioner of Canada. Sincerely hope all have saved a copy of their ATI request and complaint letter for Gordon A. Watts. To understand what we mean, go to the following site http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/1911ati.htm Gordon has provided addresses for both Statistics Canada and for National Archives. You may copy his statement, if you prefer, but the statement must be general and ONLY request the 1911 census which was supposed to have been released June 1, 2003. [YOU cannot ask to search for any names -- that costs $48.15.] The form is the same for each one -- only change department in "Federal Government Institution" [National Archives or Statistics Canada] http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/gos-sog/forms/Acc-pri/350-57_e.rtf [Form may be saved in Wordpad - filled in on computer] A cheque for $5.00 must be sent with each form, made out to Receiver General of Canada [BONUS:- We may have a refund from National Archives!] Following YOUR letter of rejection (copy for Gordon), complain to John Reid, Information Commioner of Canada. The waiting period is at least 30 days plus "snail mail" time allowance. We apologize that only Canadians may send Access to Information forms -- but some "below the 49th" have relatives who do this for our American relatives -- the name and address must be Canadian! As we are paying the salaries of those in both departments, not directly, but through other means, let staff members remember the summer of 2003 as BUSY! Bottom line - we want the 1911 records released intact without any restrictions or stupid little tick-off boxes on 2006 census, etc. [Should anyone have questions -- please contact myself or Gordon Watts gordon_watts@telus.net] Muriel M. 3. It now costs $9.00 per hour to search any event record there from 1910 to the present. The only records sealed are adoption records. To maximize your time when searching there it would be helpful to have an approximate year (the indexes for the earlier years contain five years of names) and the city or town where the event took place. 3. Hi Listers, I am still attempting to locate the christening/baptism of my grandmother who, according to her marriage certificate and the English 1901 census, was born in St. John's NFLD 10th July 1867. She was Maria BUTT, her father was Richard, a carpenter. Can anyone point me in the right direction towards where the records may be found? I do not think she was a Catholic but could have been either C.of E. or Non-Conformist. She married my grandfather, an English soldier, in the Barracks Chapel, Halifax, N.S. and returned to England with him after his tour of duty. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Harvey, Adelaide, Sth. Australia.
